Chris BeveridgeSome days I just can’t believe what goes on on the geeky side around here.

One of my weekend projects that’s come up for the fall is finishing off the shed we had installed this summer to deal with all the yard stuff. While it came primed and ready to be painted, I really wasn’t interested in painting it. So, how to get it painted on the cheap but decently? I let my eldest daughter know that if she would paint it, I’d let her do it up like a TARDIS, since she’s a huge Doctor Who fan. To my surprise, it’s already half painted and actually looks pretty decent for a rough first coat. Sometimes it’s worth taking advantage of a kids interest in things to achieve your own goals. We’ll toss up a few pictures when it’s all done, though it’s pretty much a slim project just to get something done.

With the kids back in the hosue with me for the next week, I didn’t get to hit the movies over the weekend, but I did sneak in a Thursday night movie for Riddick. I’m a big fan of Pitch Black but I barely remember Chronicles of Riddick. This film worked well for me overall even if a lot of it feels like a retread of the first in a way but it’s just curious in the kind of pacing it has early on, that it does try to play to some connection to the second film and yet stands on it own. The film really feels like a bridging work overall where it’s trying to clean up the mess of the second film and set up for where it can go from here. There’s some good fun as it progresses since it does hook into the nature of Pitch Black just right and it has a fun cast that rolls out, with the obvious expected nod to Katee Sackhoff since I’ve long liked her. Riddick is definitely what you’d expect overall based on what the first two did and what Vin Diesel is trying to do with it. It’s definitely a “For the fans” kind of film though.

I’m now waiting till Wednesday this week so I can rewatch Star Trek Into Darkness as the 3D Blu-ray is inbound. I didn’t see it in 3D in the theater – I’m beyond paying those prices, especially when more people than just me are going – but the BD was pretty damn cheap overall. And I feel the need to see some Benedict Cumberbuns on the big screen here in 3D with his broody nature.

My eldest daughter came to me tonight while I was in the midst of watching old My Boys episodes on Netflix and asked if I knew what Attack on Titan was. Oh boy. I’ve only watched the first episode so far as Kyle is reviewing it for the site and I really think it’s a show I’m going to want to marathon like crazy once I have it. Watching that first episode with her and her younger sister (13 and 11) was definitely amusing since it’s a strange show as it starts and then turns hilariously violent. She’s wanting to get back into anime just a bit after some minor detours away from it recently since she’s been all about the Brit shows as she’s joined the anime club at high school. Suffice to say, it’s going to be an interesting club as I’m curious to see what they do and what I can do to provide them with some fun things along the way. Finally, a club where I’ll be useful!

A good chunk of my weekend was lots to dealing with some Tivo problems as I upgraded to their new Roamio box with the six tuners in it. The box I got had some faulty tuners on it so that involved some wacky swapping out experiences and plenty of calls. While we had no cable for a few days, that made it easier to dip into Netflix a bit more. That meant a few movies over the weekend with some streaming and DVD releases. On the streaming side, I caught Nobody Walks which was interesting and quirky and gave me a short haired Olivia Thirlby which just doesn’t work all that well. I also took in Bachelorette just because I felt like abusing myself. I really like Kirsten Dunst but her choices continue to frustrate. It also made for a Lizzy Caplan double feature as I had in the disc for Save the Date, which is just a standard relationship drama. I do enjoy my chick flicks. Rounding it out, I added Salvation Boulevard which had Pierce Brosnan as a megachurch pastor who accidentally thinks he kills an athiest all while an innocent ex-deadhead gets caught up in it. It’s kind of surreal in a lot of ways but it’s just a fun piece to watch Brosnan in and to see Greg Kinnear being buffeted about by everything definitely worked.

With the news about Queen & Country getting potential casting and forward movement in its feature film adaptation, I found myself grabbing the first definitive volume off of Amazon for a couple of books. I love Ellen Page and though she’s not my favorite Kitty Pryde, I’m hopeful she can make a fun and big movie based off of a comic. And I do love me some Greg Rucka. Of course, I have a ton of unread graphic novels to read. Here’s hoping to get through a bunch of them when the weather is worse and going outside isn’t quite the same option.

Until next time!
