Coming as a shock to nobody, Constantin Films has put the sequel to Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones on hold. With the first feature adaptation of the young adult novel series bringing dismal results with a worldwide take of just $37 million on its $60 million budget – and a $9.3 million US debut, it’s not a surprise that City of Ashes is getting the brakes applied. Constantin was set to roll right into the next feature quickly with everyone already signed on to return and director Harald Zwart ready to return as director as well, but it’s likely that Constantin Films will just cancel the whole thing unless something miraculous happens.
The film is the latest in a string of young adult novels adapted to film that just haven’t gained any traction after the more popular offerings of Hunger Games dominated. A good number of these books do have large followings, but they haven’t become the phenomenon that it and Twilight became which generated so much interest and box office results.
