Viz Media was asked on Facebook recently about what happened with their release of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. The publisher originally was going to release the series back in the 90′s, but problems with the release of Baoh – and the small market at the time – drove them away from it. They released some of the series, starting with “Part 3″, the Stardust Crusdarers segment, back in 2005 for several volumes with the last one being released in 2010 with volume sixteen after it shifted to a quarterly release. Now, it appears, that the title could be coming back into “digital print” through their digital manga service.
VizMedia If you’re a fan of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, then you’ll be happy to know we’re about to release Part 3 digitally. Depending on how that goes, we’ll see if we can do more.
The representative went into some detail about the problems with the series with why they make changes, which is frustrating for them and fans who want it in its original form.
VizMedia Well, I won’t go into too much detail, but it’s not quite that easy. For example, McDonald’s will sue anyone who uses an M for the logo, a golden letter on a red background, MacDonald’s or something similar in the restaurant name, etc. Then in addition to the names, you also have to look at all the art too. Off the top of my head, in part 4 alone there’s Red Hot Chili Pepper, Echoes, Knocking on Heaven’s Door, Cheap Trick, Pearl Jam, etc. It’s a lot of people that we have to contact and work with.
And when told to just leave it alone basically and hope for the best…
VizMedia It’s not exactly sound business practice to try to do something sneakily and hope no one sues you later. But like we said, we’re doing what we can.
Plot concept: In a Japanese jail sits 17-year-old Jotaro Kujo: punk, fighter, delinquent – and possessed by a force beyond his control! Around the world evil spirits are awakening: “Stands,” monstrous invisible creatures which give their bearers incredible powers.
To save his mother’s life, Jotaro must tame his dark forces and travel around the world to Cairo, Egypt, where a hundred-year-old vampire thirsts for the blood of his family. But the road is long, and an army of evil Stand Users wait to kill Jojo and his friends.
