I should have done this earlier, but such is the way the Christmas cookie crumbles. We’ve been asked throughout the last week or so for some of the best picks from the 12+ Days of Christmas that Right Stuf is running this year with all sorts of bundles and deals. You can find all of Day 11 here but I wanted to offer up my picks for what’s a must-own from the list, at least with my strange, bizarre and twisted view of what I like.

This is an older show and one of the first things FUNimation did outside of Dragon Ball properties. It’s a violent SF series with some great designs and a good sense about itself. It’s a good deal of content for a low prie too.

I absolutely adored this OVA series because it works with the double length episodes, has some gorgeous animation and came across in a rather confident way. The Blu-ray is particularly striking. It felt old school while combining the best of the present.

Sadly, it’s incomplete, but the first half of the season is a must-see for those wanting some great character drama revolving around acting and the life of a poor young woman.

I don’t feel guilty for liking this, but it’s definitely a guilty pleasure. Strong animation as we get a show that’s focused on young adults in a rough world with a mafia atmosphere that doesn’t hold back before it goes off the rails into the science fiction side that touches on the game.

An absolutely great little show of fanservice and comedy that left me grinning every episode.

I won’t recommend it all because there’s so much here and each has its merits, but I absolutely adore Tenchi Muyo GXP. I cut my teeth on the original OVA series on laserdisc – one episode per disc! – and I liked most everything else afterwards, including Tenchi in Tokyo. But GXP is what leaves me wishing they’d do more with that property.

Underwater Ray Romano. Once you read it that way, it’s all over. This is an absolutely beautiful show that does some amazing world building in a fantasy realm with some tricks and quirks. I loved it so much when I saw the ADV Films release that I imported the Japanese Blu-ray box set because I knew we’d never see it in that form. And still haven’t, which is a travesty.
