Gundam AGE Episode 9

Small reveals abound as the series starts shaping up for the next arc.

What They Say:
Flit questions Woolf about the source of the new G-Exes. Woolf confesses and leads Flit to his old haunt, the Madorna Factory. Flit is amazed by the range of mobile suits under construction. But then, a shocking sight! Among the other models is a UE mobile suit! Flit and company are astounded. Just then, the UE suit activates and begins to destroy the contents of the factory. Flit and Woolf fight together against it, but cannot resist its fierce attacks…

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The introduction of the upgraded Gundam Titus was definitely fun in the previous episode since it let us see a new twist to how Flit could fight and deal with the enemy that was countering his beam weapons. We also got to see Woolf show up in his G-Exes, which brought a good deal of firepower and capability to the fight that helped to push back against the UE that were attacking. It was all decent material that gave us some nice upgrades amid a storyline about old syndicates in Fardain that just can’t realize there’s a bigger issue at stake and they could potentially make out even better by working together, even for awhile. Thankfully, the Flit and Woolf material helped to make it a fun watch, especially since the bulk of it was all about the fight itself.

With the group heading off to where Woolf had his work done at the Madorna Factory, we get to see a bit more of the characters we glimpsed there and the kind of working relationship that exists. And we get a few good nods about how it’s illegal to modify a military mobile suit anywhere but at a Federation facility, which adds a nice bit of nuance to what Woolf is doing in order to face off against the UE. Discovering how the G-Exes is based off of the Gundam design is intriguing as well since it’s tied to the way that Woolf wants to be a Gundam himself. And that gets Flit’s hair up a bit as he pushes back against it and reveals a few reasons why things on the G-Exes needs to change in order to achieve that kind of goal. Interestingly, while this does go over well overall, the relationship gets strained quickly when the group realizes that the Madorna Factory is doing some work on a UE suit as well since they’ll work with everyone. Even Mardona is kind of surprised by how things turn since the suit goes on a sudden rampage when “discovered”.

This little bit of action is nicely done and adds a bit of tension, but it’s a bit more of just time-passing in a way as everything is dealt with. This ends up giving the group some clues about what to do next in order to find out more about the UE. But while they have some potential ideas, Grodek decides that their next destination is that of the colony named Misnry. While he hasn’t put together a real fleet in a way, Grodek has pulled together some private vessels to work with him from Fardain and he intends to go up against a UE stronghold to try and make an impact, gain information and change the overall course of events since there are still so many that don’t even realize what’s going on. It may not be the sharpest of plans, but with his on the outside nature at the moment, it’s definitely the best approach for the Diva crew.

In Summary:
Gundam AGE moves forward with its next round of plans and we get some decisiveness on Grodek’s part, which is good for a captain to have, and the rallying around him by the crew that knows this isn’t your normal military operation for a lot of reasons. With some exploration of the Mardorna Factory and what it means, what Woolf has done with his mobile suit and some of the fun with Flit, it’s a good transitional episode that closes out what happened in the last few and puts the group on a good footing for moving forward now. Whether it works out well from there is a whole other thing though, but one I’m looking forward to since I do enjoy the whole taking the fight to the enemy aspect.
