With its based on a true story angle, solid promotion and an engaging cast on the talk show circuit, Lone Survivor pulled off a $38 million win this weekend, making it a good start to the year for Universal. The feature beat out new opener Legend of Hercules by $30 million, though there’s some disparity in the number of screens. That’s the big thing this week as a lot of new openers went wide, but not huge. Frozen still commands the most at 3200 screens and it made $15 million while Anchorman 2 is doing the same at 3100 screens, though it hit on $6 million.
Legend of Hercules from Lionsgate hit 2100 screens and did $8.6 million while other new opener August: Osage County did $7 million on just 900 screens. The best movie I saw this weekend went wider than the limited run it had so far with Her, bringing in $5.4 millin on 1700 screens. This January has a lot more variety to it and interesting material than last year, having this feel like less of a dumping ground, but it’s still shaking loose some low hanging fruit.
