Take this one as it is, considering that Rupert Sanders has a whole lot on his plate in general, but the director of Snow White and the Huntsman has signed on with DreamWorks to bring Ghost in the Shell to the big screen. The project apparently has a new script from William Wheeler for DreamWorks and it’s being produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul for the studio. The property was picked up quite a long time ago, which we saw with the animated film being released by DreamWorks a decade or so ago, and was talked about as a real passion project for Steven Spielberg who saw it as an ideal film to shoot in 3D.
Created by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell was first published in 1989 by Kodansha, one of the largest publishing companies in Japan. It went on to generate two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, an anime TV series and three videogames. DreamWorks released the second anime film.
Due to the number of projects that Sanders is attached to, it’s unclear which one he’ll actually be picking since there are some he’s developing himself already. Scriptwriter Wheeler has a number of things out that’s slowly raising his desirability with projects such as Hoax, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Entering Hades and Queen of Katwe all in various stages as completed scripts.
