The January doldrums are hitting for some new films as they come out but others are just doing quite well. The new film this weekend, I, Frankenstein, didn’t do well at all as it hit just a $8 million opening, which is what a whole lot of films did this time last year as well as they’re poorly received, poorly marketed and often just poor movies. The film added a bit more overseas with another $13 million, which isn’t going to help since it cost $65 million to make. Based on the graphic novel of the same name, it’s actually kind of fun in a shlocky way as it deals with Frankenstein’s Monster over two hundred years later as he gets caught up in a war between demons and gargoyles. It’s fresh from that perspective in that the usual vampires and werewolves aren’t here and it essentially feels like Underworld without Kate Beckinsale.
The real winner this weekend though continues to be Kevin Hart with Ride Along as the film added another $21 million with a natural but better than expected decline, bringing it up to $75 million total on its $25 million budget. Kevin Hart is in a number of films coming up in 2014 and you can simply expect him to be in a lot more based on this.
