Super Sonico has had a lot more fun with its first half of the season than I would have ever imagined, but it’s not the kind of show where I’m laughing out loud or just being drawn in by copious amounts of fanservice. I’m being drawn in but rather enjoyable and most realistic, character profession excepted, slice of life material. It’s been pretty restrained so far in the area it’s most vulnerable with when it comes to fanservice, but it kind of blows that out of the water in the prologue here with some swimsuit material that is admittedly amusing to watch. Particularly since we had the previous episode that painted such a good portrait of Sonico as an all around good, smart and motivated person. Providing some time with friends that involves a bit of peer pressure in regards to sexuality actually does fit in with the scope of things.
Most of us have that really outgoing friend that can pull it off, so having one like that for Sonico definitely makes sense. Unfortunately, as much as they plan for some fun in the sun with swimsuits, the weather has other ideas and a large downpour hits, creating an opportune slumber party of sorts. While that could be a lot of fun, the show wants to go elsewhere with the main course of story and that has Sonico and her friends off on a cruise for a job and that means the swimsuits are abundant and the montage material about what you’d expect. But they have fun with it by showing off things that girls would actually be interested in with it and doing things like the whole Titanic on the bow of the ship. It’s a good way to have some fun before the real job starts, which is with Kabuko showing off the new company product, the Fat Burning Moel.
While the first half is pretty simple and fun fluff, the second half goes in a really comical direction as it turns out that the product used is turning people into hungry monsters that are stalking the ship now. It’s certainly not the same as what other episodes have been, but it’s very easy to get into the dream-like silliness of it all as the three girls do their best to escape since nobody else normal is around. Just hungry rich, older folks who partook of the product. It’s a fun bit of running around going on that takes place at night and there’s some overdone drama that fits perfectly as the girls realize just how dangerous the whole thing is and how close to the end of their lives they are. It’s actually kept mostly tasteful in terms of fanservice, but it’s always there to some degree. Of course, it’s all a particular kind of semi-dream sequence, but in the end it leaves you smiling and enjoying the friendship aspect that’s made strong here.
In Summary:
Super Sonico has mostly impressed me so far with how it handles the character within the show itself, though this episode is one that really does play up the fanservice but finds a way to make it at least fit with how the girls are with each other. But it is a bit much, especially compared to previous episodes. The show does have a lot of fun with the whole undead monsters storyline hungering for them as they prowl the ship and I absolutely love the ending sequence which does the whole horror storyline in a great way, including some sport on dance moves from Michael Jackson’s Thriller with Sonico going all out with it. And a chainsaw. It’s a great parody that really left me loving it.
