The LEGO Movie

The weekend that was at the box office was in a lot of ways kind of predictable, though you couldn’t be sure what the wildcards may be. The LEGO Movie has found itself another winning weekend in a very low-interest February as it raked in another $31.5 million, bringing its domestic run t $183 million while still sitting in some nearly 4000 screens. The new films aren’t holding up well in comparison, though they have what’s more traditional February revenue. 3 Days to Kill marks the second Kevin Costner outing this year as part of his post Man of Steel career revival after showing up in Shadow Recruit last month and in the upcoming Draft Day. This film didn’t hit it out the park with a$12 million take, but it’s at least just got a $28 million budget so it’s not a killer in terms of returns for Relativity who may see some decent returns if it can get it further out int the world. But it’s just not resonating, with a weak bit of marketing, for a film with McG at the helm and with a solid cast and Luc Besson writing.

The other new film has a lot more hurdles to overcome with Pompeii doing just $10 million domestically. The latest from Paul W.S. Anderson certainly has a great cast to it and a decent setup, though it left us a bit cold after watching the Spartacus TV series. Not so much in terms of character because there are obviously differences in run time, but the intensity and visuals of it all paled to what that TV series did for making it feel powerful. On the positive side for the $100 million budgeted film from Sony, it did about $23 million overseas and has a lot more territories it can roll out into, which if it’s like past Anderson films like the Resident Evil series, it’ll perform well around the world but do poorly domestically.

Of the romantic themed movies that landed for Valentine’s Day previously, they’re all dropping like a rock with some significant percentages, such as Winter’s Tale down by a whopping 71% and down 68% for Endless Love.
