Wile a lot of attention was placed on The Wind Rises when it hit Japan last year, the fall saw another Studio Ghibli film debut with Princess Kaguya. The film came from Isao Takahato and while there were many reports of struggles to get it made through the animation process, the end result was a decidedly beautiful film that fits within Takahata’s style.
GKIDS has announced the acquisition of the feature for North American distribution with more information to come later in the year. The company previously released From Up on Poppy Hill and other Studio Ghibli films as well as Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies which they worked with Sentai Filmworks with.
Plot concept: The story follows an old man who makes a living by selling bamboo. One day, he finds a princess in a bamboo. The princess is only the size of a finger. Her name is Kaguya.
