While plans were kicked around awhile ago for an adaptation that had Nicolas Cage attached for a time, The Sadhu is once again on the table after the relative success of 300: Rise of an Empire. Producer Mark Canton, who worked on that film, is developing the story that was told back in 2006 in Virgin Media’s comics line and is bringing in the original author for it, Gotham Chopra, along with Graphic India head Sharad Devarajan. Canton has some good experience in this realm as he worked not only with the new film but the original 300 as well as The Immortals.
“In the same way Greek myths have captivated the imagination of audiences around the world, the screenplay by Gotham Chopra and Sharad Devarajan for Warrior taps into the mystical traditions and mythologies of India through an accessible action-packed adventure that I am confident will make a spectacular blockbuster film and will mark the birth of a new franchise,” said Canton.
“With 300 and Immortals, Mark Canton has produced some of the most successful films in Hollywood based on epic myths and legends,” added Devarajan. “We are incredibly honored that he will now be working with us to take the story of The Sadhu to the big screen.”
Plot concept: Sadhus do not know love or hate, desire or fear. They are detached from all emotional ties, devoting themselves to a spiritual journey said to unleash unimaginable powers. It is this ancient tradition that James Jenson is fated to tread but he must first tackle his biggest obstacle yet – himself. When James Jenson, a down-on-his-luck Englishman, is recruited into her majesty Queen Victoria’s army and posted with his family in Colonial India, he takes the first step towards meeting his destiny. But a tragic twist of fate sends James on a journey that will force him to choose between spiritual awakening and human instinct, guiding him from a simple soldier to a spiritual warrior. Between oath and instinct there is The Sadhu.
