Last night saw the debut of a bit of corporate marketing and synergy ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier with ABC bringing out Assembling a Universe, as it looks into what Marvel Studios has been doing and building towards. The hour long special covered a lot of familiar material to fans of the properties but it also brought a lot of light for new fans and those that may not look closely at times as to how movies are made and what goes into adapting the material.
We also got some neat little tidbits in there for the hardcore fans to nibble on. In addition to an array of concept art below, which includes our first real look at Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, we have Joss Whedon talking about how he wants this film to feel like it’s a little more grown up than the first, since we got the heavy lifting done and don’t have to really work at introducing the core characters. There’s a pretty good video clip at the bottom here that really gets peoples enthusiasm up with what he and Kevin Feige are up to within Phase 2, sa well as the way they want to use the Avengers property as the end and launch point of each phase.
Which could be tricky in the years to come as Feige does go on elsewhere, such as this interview over at Badass Digest, where he talks about doing more than two feature films a year.
“I think television is filling some of that now, in terms of bringing out more product. That’s certainly the idea with the Netflix shows. But I don’t know that we will necessarily say “Okay, we’re now moving strategically to three a year, now we’re moving to four a year.” What I think is more likely – if [knocks on wood-like table] the next group of movies work and people want to see additional stories – we’ll have too many franchises and you can’t do one of each franchise every two or three years. We’d have to move to three a year, but that would have to be a natural move if it were to occur. We’d have a [script] draft, we’d have a filmmaker, we’d have a character the audience wants to see – let’s slot in a place for a third one. Or a fourth one.
But it’s hard enough to deliver two quality, hopefully bar-raising movies a year.”
Suffice to say, while there are plenty waiting for the bottom to drop from the superhero film market, there are a lot of fans that have spent their lives waiting for big picture adaptations of their favorites that are getting some really great treatments ahead.
