With a domestic take of $44 million and an international take of $33 million, Noah took the box office this weekend in a big way, which was needed considering the controversy with its faithfulness to the source material in question the last few months. The film has a bit to go in order to be profitable, but it’s off to a decent start and will likely have some decent word of mouth since the CinemaScore numbers are very much very positive and very negative, leading to a C average, and that gets people to talk. The fil is the biggest opening for Russell Crowe and it’s the fourth biggest opening weekend of the week so far.
Divergent had a good hold overall since last weekend with another $26 million brought ine even as it’s barely started its international run which will be staggered over the coming months. Muppets Most Wanted held on fairly well too with an $11 million take, bringing it up to $33 million domestically.
This weekend also saw another threshold covered as Frozen made it up to $1.07 billion, surpassing Toy Story 3 to become the highest grossing animated movie ever, thanks to its continued performance in Japan where it added another $7.5 million and $50 million since its debut there.
The big but unsurprising news is that the roll out of Captain America: The Winter Soldier overseas with lots of very positive press has brought it $75 million in thirty two markets, which is about 57% of the international locales. The film is clearly set to outperform its predecessor which made $194 million internationally during its run while doing $176 million domestically for a total of $370 million back in 2011 in the pre-Avengers days.
