‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Sequel Wins Weekend Box Office

Amazing Spider-Man 2While the advance reviews have been terrible, audiences are finding a lot to like about Amazing Spider-Man 2 as that chatter has largely been positive, enough so that it did $92 million this weekend domestically with another $116 million overseas, which since it opened early brings its worldwide take to $369 million already. It’s interesting to see that the film is getting called out for franchise fatigue since it didn’t do as well as the 2002 installment for example, but it did $30 million better than the first Amazing Spider-Man back in 2012 so that’s definitely a positive there in addition to the growing worldwide appeal where the stars did a lot of groundwork while also drawing in some record numbers, particularly in India where the film opened with the best a Hollywood film ever has at $16 million. Of course, it opened a few million less than Captain America: The Winter Soldier, so it’s getting a whole lot of grief for that.

Cap continues to do well in the month since its release as it’s now added another $7 million to its domestic coffers for a total of $237 million there and $679 million worldwide. It’s also helping to slowly raise the boat on the TV series Agents of SHIELD as well, though not as much as I’m sure ABC would like.

Having felt like one of the few people that quite enjoying the first Amazing Spider-man film, I wasn’t surprised at some of the vitriol over this one. Having just seen it, I’m once again glad to get a movie without MJ, without the Bugle and more about Peter and Spidey himself. I’m an old school comics fan, haven’t read any Spidey since may 93 or 94, so I definitely enjoyed what this one brought to the table because it gives the character more of what defined him throughout the 80′s for me as he moved forward in life. Yes, there are things I would change or do differently and I feel that with most films. But overall, had a lot of fun with it, had no problems with the “varying tones of the film” or the “overstuffed” characters nature. It felt more true to the Spidey comics of my day.

And for context, while I enjoyed the Raimi Spidey movies, I am not enamored with them. I long felt Maguire was the wrong choice for it and I disliked some of the changes made to it as well, especially going with MJ for such a big part and having no Gwen acknowledgements. It was also early in the comic book movie boom so I got it. Similarly, I’m not much of a fan of X-Men or X-Men 2 but really loved First Class. Those original films are what helped launch everything but I always felt like a grudging fan of it simply because we were getting decent comic book movies.

So I’m hoping for good things with the third installment – especially if they capitalize on Felicia and avoid MJ and bring her in with the 4th installment when they have a new actor playing Peter as well.
