A good comedy can go a long way in the box office if it manages to hit all the right quadrants and Neighbors certainly managed to do just that. With a $18 million budget, the film brought in $51 million easily this weekend and a range of audiences to see it since it is relatable  to both younger and older audiences and that sweet spot right in between that the main characters here are from. It also didn’t hurt that the film had lower pricing by not having any 3D offerings and a 90 minute run time that meant the theater could show it a lot more. The film made back its budget on Friday alone and will do well from here, though it’s expected to drop relatively quickly since it’s getting middling reviews and word of mouth will only go so far.

Not surprisingly, it knocked Amazing Spider-Man 2 to the second spot as that film had a 57% drop from the week before, which is fairly in line with other Marvel films, though it’s worse than the first film which had a much smaller drop that was also during a bigger holiday period back in 2011. It’s still the #1 film worldwide as this weekend brought in $106 there, $37 million of which was from the US. This property continues to do better overseas and Sony is definitely plugging it that way. It’s not brought in $550 million worldwide in 10 days which is certainly nothing to sneeze at. It’s not likely to do the same as the first one did domestically, but it’s expected to do better worldwide in the end. The 2011 feature did $752 million in its 104 days of release.
