Bad things going down in BeaconHills certainly isn’t a surprise, but with this episode it takes on a new public design as a lot of things are happening. The primary that kicks it off is a ten car pile-up that has lots of people in the hospital where we see Scott’s mother working hard. Harder than usual since the attending doctor has gone missing and the on-call that’s on her way in suffers from a to of butterflies attacking her in the car. It also takes an interesting turn when Ethan comes in with Danny as he’s going through a serious issue and is spitting up mistletoe. It’s a strange series of events going on that plays to the latest aspect of the sacrifices as healers are the key of the moment.

Where the show goes with it is fairly interesting since the healers are disappearing and the one that gets tagged and knows about it is Scott’s boss at the vets office. With him calling Scott just before it happens, it definitely adds some nice tension since Deaton makes it clear that he can be found and that he’s putting that burden on Scott. This issues also gets a bit more complicated since Stiles father is getting more involved in it all, as is natural for the police, and that actually gets Scott and Stiles to agree that it’s time to tell him more about what’s really going on, as complicated as that may make it all. Of course, that kind of conversation gets pushed off in favor of other avenues first, as Deaton’s sister makes it clear they won’t be able to help and that they need someone like Lydia to do this bit of finding.

Of course, Lydia is still in this sort of unknown place about who or what she is when you get down to it, and it’s amusing to see the ways they try to use her to get something out of her in regards to Deaton. Running that in parallel with Deucalion coming to the school works well as he offers Scott help in trying to solve all of this and find Deaton. One subplot is light and almost comical while the other is more dangerous as it puts the two men in a combat role, one that Scott really can’t compare with in the end since Deucalion is just long lived and skilled at this point, something that Scott’s brash approach can’t match with the way that he is.

While there is a life on the line, it’s the approach that works well here in making this a fun episode as a lot of the characters get involved. While we have some time with Lydia that’s comical, there’s another scene where Scott and Allison search her father’s office for clues, but end up in some comical and sexual situations that really do make you grin. It’s a fun bit of youth that comes out in it all. But the show does play serious for a lot of things, including the slow subplot involving Kali going after Derek and actually using the twins to capture his semi-girlfriend teacher friend and use her as a hostage in order to fight against Derek one on one.

The show does play dark in the end though as the fight between Derek and Kali goes on and the situation changes badly for him. Kali’s intent on causing him a lot of pain in order to bring him to where he needs to be, and that includes having him actually kill Boyd in a pretty forced and sad way. Looking at it as part of Derek’s overall evolution since we first met him in the first season, he’s certainly changed a lot and it works well to show him becoming closer and bonding with those that he had brought in for his own pack. Adding this on top of the events previously with Erica, it has to be impacting him in a lot of ways at this point and it’s easy to imagine that he’s just going to be gunning for Kali even more now.

In Summary:
One of the things that I continue to love about this show, especially compared to many other serial series, is that it does make changes to the cast and it really does feel like there are some stakes at risk here. With another of the kids having been taken down, some real danger for others and Scott going through more changes as we’re starting to get a much clearer idea of what his path in life will be. It’s an interesting approach to the werewolf lore and it does make it seem like there are more flavors to werwolves than we were introduced to back at the start of the series, but it works well to keep it fresh. There’s a lot to like with what goes on here and it’s adding a lot more to the lore and nudging – or outright forcing – the cast to grow and change.

Grade: B+
