Kick-Ass 2

Kick-Ass 2

With four new movies opening this weekend of different types, the end result was a period that was down 6% compared to the same time last year and a whole lot of disappointments. For The Butler, controversy didn’t help too much when it came to its factual accuracy, but with Oprah promoting it and 72% of Fandango purchasers indicating that she was the reason they were going, it definitely helped. The film made $25 million on its small budget that had only a minimal investment overall by The Weinstein Company so it should do well overall, though it underperformed with what had been hoped.

Kick Ass 2 fared poorly this weekend, which is another poor release for Universal this year when it comes to comic material after RIPD. With a $13.5 million take and a fourth place position, it’s expected that it’ll do about $30 million overall, though it’ll likely add a fair bit to the home video release coffer as that’s where the first film really gained an audience. The film at least doesn’t have the honor of being the worst new opener as Jobs tried to get that position by coming in at #7 with $6.7 million, but even that didn’t do it. The new release from Relativity Media, who has had a lot of bombs this year, came in at #13 at $3.5 million. Which means it didn’t  even chart. Which is pretty bad for a film that was on just under 2500 screens.
