Marvel Comics is getting things close to the end with the current arc in The Mighty Thor with the death in the wings and they’re now previewing the upcoming 705th installment that’s set to land on March 21st. The book comes from writer Jason Aaron, who has been working this arc for years now, and artist Russell Dauterman that has turned in some fantastic material over that period as well.

“This is it, folks! The big showdown between Thor and Mangog. The penultimate chapter of ‘The Death of the Mighty Thor,’” teases series editor Wil Moss. “Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman have been building to this issue for over three years, and you absolutely do not want to miss this. You may think you know where things are going, but I promise you do not.”

Plot Concept: Since kicking things off with MIGHTY THOR #700, the Mangog has managed to wreak havoc on Thor’s world, and he’s shown no signs of stopping – even in a saga that has so far managed to include almost every Thor villain. On the heels of the action, MIGHTY THOR #705 will continue to up the ante, leaving the fate of Asgard in jeopardy…along with the fate of Jane Foster, who will make the ultimate heroic sacrifice in a conclusion that will rock the Marvel Universe, and the minds of readers everywhere!

Exploring more of history, doomed to repeat it?

Creative Staff:
Story: Marguerite Bennett
Art: Mirka Andolfo
Colors: J. Nanjan
Letterer: Wes Abbott

What They Say:
Trapped in the labyrinth with Talia al Ghul…as something approaches.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Bombshells: United delights me once again this week for the simple fact that I get more Mirka Andolfo artwork. While we get things slimmed down in a number of areas for backgrounds with simple walls and the like we also get some better time spent on backgrounds with new areas revealed and flashbacks to the past. I’m a bit of wary of Marguerite Bennett doing too many looks backward since it ends up making things feel even more complicated and convoluted but it can also slow down the pacing with exposition in this form. Particularly if you’re wary as to whether it’ll be worth the investment in time to really add it to the narrative as a whole. It does bring in some important parts to the history of the world in the area and how things swept across the stage of time but I’m still just a bit wary of it.

A decent part of this installment focuses on the fight and flight against the creature that Renee and Kate have come across and it’s done a bit lighthearted with Kate coming up with all sorts of anime quips that are basically dad jokes. It gets a little silly and chaotic but largely works until we get some funky moments with a little additional help from a mystery woman. She reveals herself to be Talia al Ghul and helps to secure them passage to another area/level where things they’re safe from the creature. The visual presentation of Talia is something that I’m sure is well researched and put together but it just comes across a little odd in a way I can’t quite pin down. It’s working along the lines of what’s accurate for the background for it and I’m definitely curious to see how her role evolves.

What we get is a history of where she comes from with the caliphate that existed over five hundred years ago and spanned a great deal of territory before falling into ruin. This explores some of what became called the Lazarus Pits and how it all came together there but it’s very lightly done, mostly used to show that this is an older order that exists and that the big beast they’ve been facing is one of the first put through it and twisted all that time ago. What we do get is a little bit of the rules as to how the Lazarus Pits work, three times and it’s spoiled, and we get the last page discovery of who the second one to use this one was which isn’t exactly a shock but kind of left me underwhelmed in a way. I’m enjoying this arc for what Kate brings to it, and Renee, but I’m still waiting to figure out the significance of it in the larger scheme of things.

In Summary:
Bringing Talia into the world is something I’m definitely curious to see how it’ll play out and this is a decent start to it. The book kind of runs with a couple of different focuses and throws a lot at the reader so it doesn’t have quite the weight that it feels like it should. I like the fun of the start of it with the quips and action but felt the flashback/exposition side of it was just a bit less compelling, a little too soon to be happening from someone they just met. I would have rather had more time seeing Kate and Renee connecting with Talia than getting the whole history in a kind of cartoon info dump. The book is fun overall and I definitely liked what Mirka Andolfo brought to the page with the action and Kate’s expressions so there’s plenty to like here.

©Shuichi Asou/Shueisha,PK ACADEMY

The second season of The Disastrous Life of Saiki k. is on the way and as part of the winter 2018 season and some new details have arrived. The show is set for a January 17th, 2018 premiere and is set to do a collaboration with Gintama for the first episode. In addition to that we’ve gotten a new TV spot below and an updated on who will be playing three characters announced recently with:

  • Yuki Kaji as Touma Akechi
  • Eri Kitamura as Mikoto Aiura
  • Mao Ichimichi as Imu Rifuta

The show was directed by Hiroaki Sakurai based on the series composition from Michiko Yokote. Masayuki Onji served as the character designs while JC Staff and Egg Firm will be handled the animation production for it.

The Japanese cast includes Hiroshi Kamiya as Kusuo Saiki, Mitsuo Iwata as Kuniharu Saiki, Rikako Aikawa as Kurumi Saiki, Nobunaga Shimazaki as Shun Kaidou, Daisuke Ono as Riki Nendou, Yukari Tamura as Chiyo Yumehara, Ai Kayano as Kokomi Teruhashi, Satoshi Hino as Kenishi Hairo, Natsuki Hanae as Reita Toritsuka, Tomoaki Maeno as Makoyo Terukyo, Maaya Uchida as Chisato Meyro, Showtaro Morikubo as Uryoku Chouno and Yoshimasa Hosoya as Aren Kubayasu.

The manga comes from creator Shuichi Asou which began back in 2012 and has seventeen volumes published so far. It’s not been picked up for release outside of Japan (yet). A flash anime short-form series was produced in 2013 for it, which has a different cast than what this series will have. A light novel was also produced in 2013.

Plot concept: Saiki Kusuo has a wide array of superpowers at his command, including telepathy and telekinesis. This might sound awesome, but, in Kusuo’s experience, superpowers are not all they’re cracked up to be. He tries to live a normal life, despite his annoying abilities.

© 2015-2017 Sanrio/SEGA Toys

With a minimal amount of promotion out there for the winter turned into spring 2016 and then into summer, fall, winter, spring, summer and now fall TV series Rilu Rilu Fairilu that began back in February 2016, the promos for new episodes have been doing the heavy lifting. With little promotion to it and no pick-up for streaming either, it’s not a series that has garnered much in the way of attention, even with all of its cute aspects. A new promotional spot for the next episode on December 15th, 2017 has arrived, however, and it’s a pretty good piece so that people can see the series in action. The show, animated by Studio Deen, is being directed by Gojo Series based on the overall composition from Aya Matsui. Nishichi Yamaguchi is on board handling the character designs.

The show stars Yumiri Hanamori as Lip, Aya Uchida as Himawari, Rina Hidaka as Sumire and Aina Kusuda as Rose.

Plot Concept: In a strange magical world of Little Fairilu lives the Fairlu: small magical fairies representing flowers, insects and other entities born from the Fairilu Seed. Each of the Fairilu are born with their own key which only fits to a Fairy Door they need to search. If the certain Fairilu finds the right door, they can finally mature into full fairies, which also links them to the human world. But the Fairilu must study and go to school to learn about the world in which they live while meeting new friends.

Crunchyroll is handling Food Wars: The Third Plate as part of the fall 2017 anime season and they’ve added a new round of clips from it to try and entice you to sample more of it. The two newest clips are definitely fun as we get to see more of the artistry of cooking, which will make you drool, and a good look at a salmon plate that looks great but is definitely not of my taste! They definitely showcase aspects of the series pretty well and they’re also great for sharing to try and win over someone undecided to check it out with. Crunchyroll brings new episodes out every Tuesday at 12:30pm ET for members.

The previous seasons were directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani, the series is being animated at JC Staff with Shogko Yasukawa handling the scripts and Tomoyuki Shitaya working on the character design adaptations. It’ll star Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Soma Yukihira, Risa Taneda as Erina Nakir, Minami Takahashi as Megumi Tadokoro, Ikumi Mito as Shizuka Ishigami, Maaya Uchida as Yūki Yoshino, Ai Kayano as Ryōko Sakaki, Taishi Murata as Shun Ibusaki, Yūsuke Kobayashi as Zenji Marui, Ai Kakuma as Mayumi Kurase, Rina Hidaka as Urara Kawashima, Banjo Ginga as Senzaemon Nakiri and Rikiya Koyama as Joichiro Yukihira.

The manga series is currently running in Weekly Shonen Jump by Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki with twenty-four volumes to its name so far. Viz Media publishes the manga in North America digitally and in print form.

Plot Concept: Soma Yukihira’s old man runs a small family restaurant in the less savory end of town. Aiming to one day surpass his father’s culinary prowess, Soma hones his skills day in and day out until one day, out of the blue, his father decides to enroll Soma in a classy culinary school!

The fall simuldub season has Funimation handling a show that’s gotten some good attention all around with Recovery of an MMO Junkie. They’ve been cranking through the episodes and with the simulcast finished up and the OVA coming next weekend we still have a bit more to go with the dub. Check out a recent clip from it that focuses on the creation of a cute character and their struggle! Clifford Chapin is on board as the ADR director with Jessica Cavanagh handling the scripts with the main cast for it with:

  • Terri Doty as Moriko Morioka
  • Aaron Dismuke as Hayashi
  • Natalie Hoover as Lily
  • Ricco Fajardo as Kanbe
  • Rachel Thompson as Lilac
  • Ben Phillips as Pokotarou
  • Brandon McInnis as Himeralda
  • Josh Grelle as Yuta Sakurai
  • Ian Sinclair as Homare Koiwai
  • Anthony Bowling as Kazuomi Fujimoto
  • Apphia Yu as Harth
  • Felecia Angelle as Yuki

The show is coming from director Saori Den based on the series composition by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu. Senbon Umishima is handling the character designs while Signal. MD is handling the animation production for it.

The Japanese cast includes Mamiko Noto as Moriko Morioka, Takahiro Sakurai as Yuuta Sakurai, Ryouta Suzuki as Hayashi, Reina Ueda as Lily, Tomoaki Maeno as Homare Koiwai, Takuma Terashima as Kazuomi Fujimoto, Yuuichi Nakamura as Kanbe, Yuuka Aisaka as Lilac, Takanori Yagi as Himeralda, and Kazuhiro Sunseki as Pokotarou.

Megumi Nakajima is performing the opening theme song “Saturday Night Question” while Yuuka Aisaka is performing the ending theme song “Hikari, Hikari.”

The original manga from Rin Kokuyou began in 2013 and has two volumes released and is on hiatus due to the author’s health.

The series recently got its home video side detailed as the ten episode series will have an eleventh episode that arrives in a Blu-ray box set that lands on December 8th, 2017.

Plot Concept: Moriko Morioka is a 30-year-old single NEET woman. After dropping out from reality, she has taken off in search for a fulfilling life and ended up in a net game or “netoge.” In the netoge world, she began her new life as a refreshing and handsome character named Hayashi. While starting out as a beginner, a pretty character named Lily reached out to help her. Meanwhile, in the real world, awaits a shocking encounter with a good-looking elite company employee, a mysterious blue-eyed blonde.

Netsuzou Trap VisualThe summer 2017 anime series Netsuzou TRap has its home video release scheduled and it’s a familiar one for short-form shows.  We had missed the back half of this release previously and artwork wasn’t readily available in a decent size but now we have a look at both volumes of the project that look pretty good. With episodes clocking in at around ten minutes, the twelve episode series is getting a two-volume release on September 29th, 2017 and October 27th, 2017. The DVDs are priced at 5,184 yen while the Blu-ray’s are at 6,264 yen.

Hisayoshi Hirasawa served as the chief director with scripts by Words in Stereo x Yuuichi Uchibori. Masaru Kawashima worked on the character designs and Creators in Pack handled the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes Ai Kakuma as Yuma Okazaki, Hiromi Igarashi as Hotaru Mizushima, Daisuke Ono as Fujiwara and Ryota Osaka as Takeda.

“Our readers and fans have been clamoring for more yuri,” said Seven Seas publisher Jason DeAngelis back in December 2015 upon the acquisition of the manga. “NTR is one of the best-known yuri titles currently running in Japan, and we think Kodama Naoko’s dramatic storytelling along with her beautiful artwork will make this a hit with readers who have enjoyed Citrus.”

The opening theme song will be “Blue Bud Blue” from Haruka Tojo.

Plot Concept: Yuma and Hotaru have been friends since childhood. It is only natural that when Yuma is nervous about her new boyfriend, she asks Hotaru and her boyfriend along for a double date. But when Hotaru offers herself to Yuma as “practice”, both girls realize that they’re more interested in each other than they are in their own boyfriends. With boyfriends in the foreground but a secret, passionate tryst in the background, will Yuma and Hotaru try to forget what happened between them or have they fallen into a trap of true love and betrayal?

ComiXology Sets ‘Star Wars’ Sale With 1,163 Books

With a movie coming out in just a couple of days with The Last Jedi arriving, Marvel Comics is looking to get fans loaded up on a lot of good content at a fantastic price. They ran a smaller sale last month with like 155 books but now they’re going bigger. Through ComiXology and Amazon Kindle, you can get pretty much all of the trades that they’ve put out so far at rock bottom prices, like $2 or $3 in a lot of cases, which is just incredible. The previous sale focused on the Marvel books but this one expands into the books that Dark Horse Comics produced that are now not-canon but have a lot of things worth delving into – including the manga!

Like anything, there’s some mixed quality as to what you get but there’s a lot to dig into and enjoy. I’m particularly fond of the Lando series and the first Darth Vader book but I also found the two Kanan books to expand things well for those looking at a post-Order 66 experience.

Tuesday is here and the digital service ComiXology is populating with what it expects to have on hand today. Dark Horse runs with a couple of trades while DC Comics has about eight trades on track for today, including an annotated edition of Watchmen. There’s also the latest Injustice 2 installment landing as a digital-first book.

Marvel Comics makes me happy with more Avengers West Coast surfacing as well as Silver Surfer from the great age. We also get several X-Men books and the Vampire Tales series from the early 70’s.

On the manga front, Seven Seas has two volumes out with A Centaur’s Life and Magika Swordsman and Summoner while Viz Media has three books out and Yen Press with three simulpubs that include Today’s Cerberus and the newer Final Fantasy Lost Stranger. Kodansha Comics has a slew of things out with four simulpubs and a dozen or so volumes of ongoing books, several of which are digital-only at the moment.
