ⓒ 2002 MASASHI KISHIMOTO / 2017 BORUTO. All Rights Reserved.

The Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime series is continuing on pretty well and promotion for it is continuing on as well. The 37th episode of the series is set for a December 13th, 2017 debut where it’ll arrive at 5:25 am for viewers on the Crunchyroll service and we now have a new preview for it. It’s available to all members worldwide outside of Japan, though it’ll be for premium members only in French-speaking territories (but not with French subtitles).

The project has set Noruyuki Abe as the general director overseeing the project with Hiroyuki Yamashita serving as the main director working from scripts by Ukyo Kodachi and Makoto Uezu. Character designs are being worked on by Tetsuya Nishio and Hirofumi Suzuki.

The sequel manga to the Naruto series is written by Ukyo Kodachi with artwork by Mikio Ikemoto. With it having only two volumes out and being a monthly title, it’s expected to just be used as a launching point and likely going off on its own direction or in parallel to the plans laid out by editorial for the manga and anime.

The Japanese cast includes Yuko Sanpei as Boruto Uzumaki, Kokoro Kikuchi as Sarada Uchiha, Atsushi Abe as Inojin Yamanaka, Junko Takeuchi as Naruto Uzumaki, Kensho Ono as Shikadai Nara, Nana Mizuki as Hinata Hyuga, Ryoko Shiraishi as Chōchō Akimichi, Ryūichi Kijima as Mitsuki, Shinji Kawada as Shino Aburame, Showtaro Morikubo as Shikamaru Nara and Saori Hayami as Himawari Uzumaki.

Plot concept: The Hidden Leaf Village has entered an era of peace and modernity. Tall buildings line the streets, giant screens flash with images, and the Thunder Rail runs through the village, connecting each district together. Though it’s still a ninja village, the number of civilians has increased and the life of the shinobi is beginning to change.

Boruto Uzumaki, son of Seventh Hokage Naruto Uzumaki, has enrolled in the Ninja Academy to learn the ways of the ninja. The other students are ready to dismiss him as “just the son of the Hokage,” but Boruto’s heart and character blow all their assumptions away.

As a series of mysterious events begins to unfold, it’s up to Boruto and his new friends to handle them. Like a gale-force wind, Boruto makes his own way into everyone’s hearts; his story is about to begin!

Chalk up a short but very fun show that Viewster has now added to their Amazon channel with the two-episode Dragon Half anime series.  The two part OVA series originally came out back in 1993 and saw its original North American DVD release from ADV Films way back in the day. Discotek Media rescued the license back in 2013 and released it on DVD.

The OVAs are available on the channel and are both available in either the original Japanese language with English subtitles format or the previously created English language dub.

Plot concept: Mink—the daughter of a dragon and a retired dragonslaying knight—sets out on a journey to get tickets for a concert held by Dick Saucer, world-famous teen idol and dragon hunter. Meanwhile, the corrupt king of the land is trying to take her hostage to get at her mother, and his magic-using daughter seeks to foil Mink’s quest out of sheer spite.

The fall 2014 anime series Magic Kaito 1412 has its second volume out in Germany from Peppermint Anime and they’re doing some new promotion for it. With this volume released a couple of days ago on December 8th, 2017 on separate DVD and Blu-ray releases, they now have the seventh dub clip of the series overall for it that gives us a bit of mystical magical goodness and character material that comes across well.

The cast for the show includes Kappei Yamaguchi in the title role, which is doubly amusing since he also plays the role of Shin’ichi Kudo in Detective Conan. Additionally, M.A.O. will be playing Aoko Nakamoriwhile Eri Kitamura will play Akako Koizumi. Mamoru Miyano has signed on for Saguru Hakuba as well.

The series comes from original manga creator Gosho Aoyoma and was a project he was working on before Detective Conan became a huge hit for him. The series is set for an October 2014 debut where new episodes will be broadcast in the time slot before Detective Conan, essentially making it Aoyoma Hour.

Plot Concept: Kaito Kuroba is a seventeen-year-old high school student who is an adept magician due to the influence of his father, Toichi Kuroba who died mysteriously. Eight years after his father’s death, Kaito discovers a secret room in his home that was set up by his father to reveal itself on that very day. Finding Kid the Phantom Thief’s gadgets and costume in the room, Kaito dons the disguise and decides to confront Kid who has recently resurfaced after his eight years of absence. Kaito discovers Kid to be Konosuke Jii, his father’s butler, who ascertains Toichi was the first Kid the Phantom Thief. Jii reveals he took on the role as Kid to lure out Toichi’s murderer. Upon learning that his father was murdered, Kaito continues the role of Kid the Phantom Thief as he searches for his father’s killer.

With the Blend-S series getting a lot of love around here, one way to show why it is getting that attention is through some clips. Crunchyroll is putting a lot of these out lately and there’s now two more out there that are quite different. The first clip is a good bit of fun as we see Akizuki making the mistake of being curious as he gets drawn into the cosmetic experiments. The second delves into some of the usual kinds of moe weirdness as the girls talk about their heigh-gaps…

The series was directed by Ryouji Masuyama based on the series composition by Gou Zappa. Yousuke Okuda worked on the character designs and it was being animated by A-1 Pictures.

The Japanese cast includes Azumi Waki as Maika Sakuranomiya, Akari Kito as Kaho Hinata, Anzu Haruno as Mafuyu Hoshikawa, Atsumi Tanezaki as Miu Amano, Sora Tokui as Hideri Kanzaki, Tomoaki Maeno as Dino, and Tatsuhisa Suzuki as Kouyou Akizuki.

The series had its third volume release at the end of January 2017 after it started as a pair of one-shots back in 2013 and then as an ongoing in 2014 in Manga Time Kirara Carat.

Plot Concept: Sakura Nomiya is, by nature, a person with bad luck and always gets into trouble, but knows Dino, who manages a cafeteria. However, it is not any cafeteria, and the waitresses have to act according to their “attributes.”

Shattered Angels Complete Collection (S.A.V.E. Edition) Anime DVD Review

When a transfer student from the prestigious Joutou Academy arrives at Kuu’s school, her life enters the realm of a fairy tale with a lot of dangerous action to it.

What They Say
An Eternal Tale of Passion, Tragedy and Destruction.

Ten years ago, an unspeakable disaster shook the world and endless devastation rained from the heavens. From the ashes of that tragedy rose the city of learning, Academia. A young girl named Kuu attends one of the city’s many schools, unaware that the fearful disaster only marked the beginning fo the struggles to come.

When a series of people go missing a mysterious transfer student named Kyoshiro joins her class, Kuu’s life is turned upside down. She soon finds herself locked in a conflict with the Absolute Angels, a group of beautiful girls who must feed off of human life force to survive. Wielding god-like strength, they have the power to destroy the world itself. But are these angels truly demons of destruction, or simply innocent girls trapped in a fate they can’t escape? Who is Kyoshiro, and why does he look like the prince of that Kuu sees in her dreams/ In a world of love and betrayal, Kuu must not only find the answers to these questions, but the meaning of her own existence.

The Review:
Audio:
Shattered Angels gets a pretty standard bilingual stereo mix which fits the material pretty well. The series isn’t one that’s stretching its muscles much in this department and both tracks gets a good competent stereo mix encoded at 224kbps. The show has a rather full sound to it with very little in the way of directionality either in the action or the dialogue. There are little moments of placement here and there but by and large it’s not something that stands out all that much. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback of either language track.

Video:
Originally airing in early 2007, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and is enhanced for anamorphic playback. The release is done in a 6/6 format to cover the twelve episodes across the two volumes. Not unlike other series based off of properties by Kaishaku, Shattered Angels has a very soft look to it that’s designed to promote the fairy tale aspect of it. The colors are very light and inviting for the bulk of it but there are some very vibrant moments as well when the action kicks in. The soft look generally looks quite good and noise free but there are a few areas where there is some noise to be found but it’s never distracting. The main thing that crops up is a bit of line noise during a number of the various panning sequences but it’s fairly mild overall. The show has a very clean look in general and looks quite similar to other shows from this particular creator.

Menu:
Perhaps this is in theme but it really truly feels like one of the weakest menus I’ve ever seen. The background is a static image of some light fluffy clouds against a bright blue sky. In the center of the menu are lines of large text which has the individual episode access, the language submenu and the extras. There’s a bit of light bouncy music playing for the thirty second standard loop and that’s it. It really just looks like absolutely no effort went into it at all. Everything works flawlessly in the technical sense but beyond that it’s just sort of there. The disc correctly read our players’ language presets and played according.

Extras:
The extras for this release are a real disappointment, especially in comparison to the first single volume that got released. All that’s included here is the clean version of the opening and closing sequences. Not included? The pair of bonus shorts that ran for ten minutes, the web previews and the promotional video. It’s very disappointing to see that these extras did not make it over since they obviously had them at one point.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Based on the three-volume manga series by Kaishaku known as Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora, Shattered Angels is a twelve episode series with its animation production done by TNK. With a similar look and design to other Kaishaku series, fans of their other works such as UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie and Magical Meow Meow Taruto will find much to like here. There are shared elements with other shows such as Steel Angel Kurumi and Kannazuki no Miko as well, and these are all things that just point to why I continue to have issues with their shows since they tend to adapt and rework things over and over again.

Shattered Angels was originally being released by ADV Films but they only got one volume into the three-volume release before everything went south. The series ended up going to FUNimation when Sojitz moved all their titles around but the work was continued with it and what we have here is essentially what ADV Films was going to release, just in one complete collection. This is a series that does make out better by having it all up front in one collection as my enjoyment of the first volume was fairly low. Kaishaku’s material has not been something I’ve been enamored with overall and Shattered Angels met my low expectations early on. Seeing it in full, that only reinforced those early opinions.

Shattered Angels revolves primarily around the character of Kuu, a very sweet and pleasant high school girl who attends one of the many academies within the giant city school section known as Academia. Dozens and dozens of schools appear to reside here, each with their own unique style and design as well as their own uniforms. Everyone is buzzing about the upcoming Eternal Festival in which there are all sort of romantic gestures that can be made among the students which has Kuu hoping that she has a chance with one of the boys she really likes. Of course, with her being a bit timid and not quite aggressive enough, she’s quickly disappointed but bounces back well as she wonders who she’ll actually end up with, if anyone. Surrounded by a lot of good girlfriends, Kuu remains eternally optimistic but it’s tinged with sadness as she talks about how her name really means ‘empty.’

Like any story of this nature, everything seems to change the minute a transfer student enters the door. That one comes in the form of a very handsome young man named Kyoshiro who has come from the legendary Joutou Academy. Considered the best of the best, everyone is after him at this point but he’s entirely focused on Kuu once he comes across her outside of the classes. Something about her has drawn him to her and she’s just surprised by it all, especially when the first thing he does is practically undress her in public. This is all just prelude to the bigger problem though when everything falls to a series of attacks by a green haired catgirl who is after her own prize. As it turns out, Kyoshiro is in possession of a powerful weapon, his Sword, who is known as Setsuna, a very attractive and blonde woman who is his servant in just about all ways.

Shattered Angels runs through a number of fairly standard setup ideas here as we get the girls all going crazy over certain guys, a few different viewpoints as the various Swords are introduced along with their owners and hints at what the show is really all about. There’s even a standard plot device used where Kuu writes and narrates repeatedly to her Prince that she’s interested in, whether he’s real or not. This is a nice enough hook on some level but it’s rather overdone in some ways and feels far too familiar. The last episode is the best one though as they actually go through a great deal of the larger back story for the events of the world and cover why Kyoshiro is doing what he’s doing.

The first half of the series revolves around these ideas as it sets up the basic relationships and pushes forward with what Kyoshiro is going to do. You have Kuu being kidnapped a few times, which is admittedly amusing as she writes about it in her opening letter a couple of times and you have to wonder what kind of life that must be like. Having the three main sides initially, and the relationship that they all share, it feels like a very inbred kind of show. Watching as Kyoshiro is doing his best to live up to the ideals of his older brother that died in the Days of Hot Snow is interesting enough, since it’s not that often you have a character in this position, but they do make it more interesting in the second half when said brother shows up and he turns out to be a complete monster bent on destroying the world.

And Kuu turns out to be far more than the simple girl she seems at first. Kuu is the kind of character that you know what she’ll be like for a lot of it as she has that whole fantasy view of meeting her prince, falling madly in love and having the life she wants. And you know she’s going to go through hardships to get there and there may be a secret about her along the way that tries to radically change how you view her. It’s in this manner that Kaishaku’s stories tend to bother me the most as they seem to go for the lowest common denominator and keep it that way. The ideas here aren’t original, they aren’t given anything really unique and it has an air of pure fantasy about much of it that makes it hard to really get engaged with or take seriously. There are some fun moments to be had throughout, but much of the chaotic nature expressed in the opening episodes is carried through to the end and it simply lacks any real sense of depth to it to give it the kind of grand epic importance it’s striving for.

In Summary:
Not surprisingly, Shattered Angels reminded me a lot of how I felt about other Kaishaku shows such as Steel Angel Kurumi and UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie. There are some nice design elements to it but the execution just isn’t for me. The series is one that wants to play up the fairy tale angle but to take it to another level with some overt sexuality and a lot of fanservice. There are cute moments to be found and there are a number of big action sequences as the various Swords get to fighting, but it feels very by the numbers for the first half. Even when it does start to introduce more of the back story, it doesn’t really follow through well with it since it continues the whole by the numbers feeling. Fans of Kaishaku’s material will like this – there’s even a token Valkyrie character design appearance in the end – but this is the kind of show that won’t appeal much to people who have been watching anime for years. It’s more for the newer fans who haven’t seen this kind of material done before and done better.

Mamoru Hosoda has his next work is on track with Mirai from the Future as announced this week and the film is scheduled for a July 20th, 2018 release in Japan. It’s obvious that it’ll be getting some wide international distribution with the success of other films of his over the years and while they’re being cagey on it, Madman Entertainment is likely handling it in Australia. They’re not saying they’re licensing it at the moment but they’re planning a theatrical exhibition of the film and have released a subtitled trailer, something that they wouldn’t do unless authorized to do so. Odds are things are just being finalized and all involved wanted to get the promotion out there.

Hosoda wrote and directs the film with Hiroyuki Aoyam and Ayako Hata serving as the animation directors. Studio Chizu has handled the animation production and we’ve got a brief teaser for it below.

Plot Concept: The film centers on Kun-chan, a spoiled four-year-old boy in a small house in a corner of a certain city. When his little sister Mirai is born, he feels that his little sister has deprived him of their parents’ affection, and is overwhelmed by a series of first experiences. Amidst his new life, he meets an older version of his little sister Mirai, who has come from the future.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The Injustice 2 series has been doing a whole lot of fun stuff over the course of its run and while it may feel like some plot lines are lost along the way there’s a kind of momentum that keeps it moving. It’s a book that runs slim even with the whole universe of characters to work with and there’s just an unusual feeling about it. Tom Taylor’s been nailing this run once things got settled at the start and some of the twists along the way, such as this one about bringing back the Titans, hits a certain sweet spot. Even better is that we get another Xermanico illustrated issue and that just continues to show how great his line work is with the detail, smoothness, and the flow of the action with what he puts to page. He continues to be one of my top favorites when it comes to this series, especially with as long as he’s worked on it.

The first half of the book is all about the action and it’s just a delight, even though we’re largely working with non-powered characters. It’s more about the fisticuffs than anything else but the flow of it is fun as we see the back and forth with the Eradicators and some of the twists, such as Plas trying to get inside one of them to figure out how to stop it. They’re definitely strong guardians, though not undefeatable, but it takes more than what this group has at the moment to deal with them en masse. This does allow Luke to step up in a protective role with some of the more “squishable” members of the group. Luke’s definitely fun to watch in all of this, especially as there’s the hero’s moment where he has to hold firm even as he’s being turned apart.

In a really fun and fantastic twist, the Eradicators are stopped by Ma and Pa Kent. As it turns out they’ve been living there for some time as the world isn’t safe for the people who raised Superman considering what he did. And with Smallville a mess after events, well, they had few places to go. There’s a lot of great dialogue throughout this that has blame being bandied about in a certain kind of way, something that Pa Kent knows how to push back on when it comes to Bruce’s almost passive-aggressive approach. But I particularly loved the reveal of how the Kents kept in regular contact with Alfred over the years as they watched over “their boys.” It’s a great sequence of character material and basic dialogue/interaction that’s lost in a lot of books because it’s not done amid action and it allows them to be really humanized, especially as we prepare for Plas to enter the Phantom Zone where things are going to go off the rails.

In Summary:
This series is just so much fun. Taylor knows these characters well and finds small and creative ways to expand upon them that just makes them all the more human. The dinner table back and forth is great but I also loved what we got with Plas and Luke and the simple way that Harley is kept from things because of just a few words. The action is solid, the story is moving forward well, and the artwork is fantastic as we get some very fun stuff here with the fight against the Eradicators. Definitely a strong entry in the franchise for me.

The big one for a lot of people is the new promotional video that shows it off really well but we’re also glad to see a premiere season set with an April 2018 debut this spring as it hits Tokyo MX and others.

Studio Geno is on board to handle the animation production for the show and has confirmed that Hitoshi Nanba will direct it based on the series composition by Noboru Takagi. Kenichi Ohnuki is handling the character design adaptation.

Chikahiro Kobayashi is set to play Saichi Sugimoto while Haruka Shiraishi is on board to play Ashiriba.

The series has ten volumes to its name so far as serialized through Young Jump and it looks like most recent volumes in Japan have sold around the 200,000 range. Viz Media is releasing the series in Englis in North America.

Check out our review of the first volume of the manga.

The manga won the 9th Manga Taishō award.

Plot Concept: In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! Faced with the harsh conditions of the northern wilderness, ruthless criminals and rogue Japanese soldiers, Sugimoto will need all his skills and luck—and the help of an Ainu girl named Asirpa—to survive.
