A Problematic Witness With A New ‘Ace Attorney’ Anime Dub Clip!

$

Funimation has the DVD/BD combo out last month with the first part of Ace Attorney series that has an expansive cast list where there’s a lot to like for dub fans. Funimation’s looking to shine a bit more light on the project with the dub clips that should be fun as they progress and the latest one is definitely amusing and surprisingly spot on in connection with the games as an unexpected witness takes the stand.

The expansive cast includes Eric Vale as Phoenix Wright, Lindsay Seidel as Maya Fey, Christopher Wehkamp as Miles Edgeworth, Josh Martin as Larry Butz, Bryan Massey as Dick Gumshoe, Colleen Clinkenbeard as Mia Fey, Kent Williams as Judge, Jeannie Tirado as April May, Kara Edwards as Cody Hackins, Janelle Lutz as Dee Vasquez, Anthony Bowling as Gregory Edgeworth, Jessica Peterson as Franziska Von Karma, Philip Annarella as Jack Hammer, Bill Jenkins as Manfred von Karma, Blake Shepard as Robert Hammond, Whitney Rodgers as Lotta Hart, Phil Parsons as Marvin Grossberg, Terri Doty as Misty Fey, Anastasia Munoz as Wendy Oldbag, Gregory Lush as Winston Payne, Chris Rager as Will Powers, Larry Brantley as Redd White, Ben Phillips as Frank Sahwit, Tyler Walker as Sal Manella, R Bruce Elliott as Yanni Yogi, Jill Harris as Phoenix Wright (Young), Apphia Yu as Miles Edgeworth (Young), Steph Garrett as Larry Butz (Young), and Greg Dulcie as Narrator.

Extras for the release includes the Ace Attorney Outtakes: Part 01, Episode 12 Commentary, Textless Opening & Closing Songs.

Known in Japan as Gyakuten Saiban, Capcom went big with the franchise as there’s a live action film, stage play, music and manga adaptation.

The show was directed by Ayumu Watanabe based on the composition from Atsuhiro Tomioka with A-1 Pictures handling the animation. The Japanese cast includes Yuki Kaji as Ryuuichi Naruhodou, Aoi Yuuki as Mayoi Ayasato, Masashi Tamaki as Reiji Mitsuruji, Chie Nakamura as Chihiro Ayasato, Masami Iwasaki as Keisuke Itonokogiri and Tooru Nara as Masashi Yahari.

Plot concept: Ace Attorney follows rookie lawyer Naruhodo Ryuuichi (Phoenix Wright) and his assistant Mayoi (Maya) as he defends his clients in a court of law. With limited evidence and logic as his only weapon, can Naruhodo turn the case around when all the odds are stacked against him?

Hot Gimmick Vol. #12 Manga Review

Writer/Artist: Miki Aihara
Translated by: Pookie Rolf

What They Say
Normally, most teenage girls would be beside themselves with joy to have not one but three hot-as-they-want-to-be men in their lives, and if that were all that mattered, Hatsumi Narita would have been crowned Queen of Happiness a lot time ago. But such is not the case.

Her hunky childhood friend (now an uber-studly male model) has tried to ruin her life on several occasions, her dreamy older (and adopted) brother wants to run off with her, and her cute on-again, off-again ad infinitum boyfriend continues to be the world’s biggest jerk. Who on earth will she finally choose? Or will Hatsumi remain hopelessly hapless to the bitter end?

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
With the twelfth volume of the series, Hot Gimmick and its tumultuous relationships finally draw to a close. From the very first volume, we got introduced to a very weird set of dynamics between characters looking for revenge, wanting to dominate others or simply looking for love. Unlike a lot of other series that had been coming over prior to it, Hot Gimmick had a bit more of a wild approach to its characters in that they all felt a bit more realistic in their relationships. While some of it went over the top at times, pleasantly so, the characters felt far more like teenagers than a lot of other ones. Hatsumi’s uncertainty about things allowed her to be very easily manipulated by the men who were after their own goals but she was very nicely contrasted by her younger sister Akane who knows full well what she wants after awhile and pursues it.

The last couple of volumes have been a ton of fun since it’s pushing the cast into making choices. Shinogu’s choice of declaring his intentions to Hatsumi has led to a certain weirdness between the two even though Hatsumi has agreed to it. Shinogu, being the male that he is, is completely overanalyzing it and takes it too far by telling her that he’d be happy no matter what she chooses. Hatsumi’s belief about Ryoki having slept with the fancy girl only pushes her towards Shinogu more. Even as she’s crushed by what she believes Ryoki has done she’s starting to learn more about her own heart and what her feelings really mean. Relationship books are great once they get to the point where the choices must be made since so many other books tend to never go there. The best books provide the reader with characters that you root for more than others and then many will groan with the choice. With Hot Gimmick, I think both of her real choices at the end were ones that will make lots of people groan no matter what, but it’s beautifully played out.

The final volume is a bit shorter than previous ones but Viz is able to make up for it a bit with the inclusion of a few really nice extras. We get a bonus story that really cements the relationship between Akane and Subaru. Subaru’s trying to change who he is so that Akane will be more comfortable with him, not realizing that she likes him for who he is. This is understandably hard for him since he sees all these guys in his school that want to date her and he can’t figure out why she’s with him. Akane and Subaru almost deserve a book of their own. Aihara also provides a short story called “Ten Days” that plays a fun variant on relationships with a high school girl who wants to get away from everything that troubles her. In the end, I really enjoyed this series overall and am still disappointed all these years later that it never got an anime adaptation.

Five Anime Deals Today Worth Picking Up

$

Anime is on sale pretty regularly through a number of locations and there are some fun deals to find out there that’ll save you money in getting your favorite show on your shelf – or getting to discover something new. The latest deals on Amazon, where they rotate pricing pretty regularly, have hit and there are some sweet ones in the mix. The big deal today is the first one on the list with the second season of Noragami now available for a whopping 62% off. It’s the regular edition (the limited edition is 28% off) but for those that just want the show it’s a fantastic deal. While not a deep discount by any stretch, one that should be on your preorder side is the Robot Carnival Blu-ray which is just at 13% now – and worth adding to your watchlist as Discotek Media titles have some good drops. Sentai Filmworks has a trio of titles that are on the cheap today with Beautiful Bones down to just $24, Okamikakushi at just $22 and the Blade & Soul release at just $19, Blu-ray’s all of them.

Noragami Aragoto: Life for minor god Yato isn’t getting any easier. He’s still broke, shrineless, and his partner-slash-sword-regalia has zero respect for him. Worse yet, Bishamon, one of the deadliest war gods, is after his life. Blaming him for the death of her past regalia, she won’t stop until she kills him. But there’s more to that story than she could ever realize. And as if that’s not bad enough, there’s someone working against her behind the scenes! Can Yato take on a god as powerful as Bishamon? Or will things take a more dangerous turn?

Right when he thinks things have settled down, Yato is forced into working with Nora and must brave the underworld in order to help a fellow god. The catch? He may end up stuck there if he can’t figure out how to escape Izanami, queen of the underworld.

Between all of his godly drama, Yato still needs to figure out how to help Hiyori. But all options lead to losing her, and he’s not willing to make that choice-no matter what.

Five yen doesn’t even begin to cover his trouble!

Robot Carnival: Crawling across a desiccated landscape, the Robot Carnival comes barreling its way onto DVD for the first time in North America! A visual treat for the eyes as well as the mind, Robot Carnival is an anthology collection of nine short films, many done by animators before they got their feet wet in directing. From funny to dramatic, artistic to entertaining, each story reaches towards the furthest corners of time and space to bring you a tale of robots, and the people who make them. Whether you have a love for great hand-drawn animation, an appreciation for fine storytelling, or just like robots, this anthology is a must!

Beautiful Bones: Shotaro Tatewaki knows that Sakurako Kujo isn’t a normal person. After all, most young women have multiple interests revolving around things like work, fashion, and sports, but Sakurako is fixated on just one thing: bones. While she already has a huge collection of them, mostly animal, she’s always trying to gather more, especially those of the human variety. This can be quite a problem for Shotaro: especially since he and Sakurako have a positively unnatural aptitude for discovering dead bodies together.Fortunately, Sakurako is a naturally brilliant detective who unearths the mystery of what happened to the owners of those bones, but it’s up to Shotaro to make apologies for Sakurako’s odd quirks and tendency to make off with the evidence. It’s a grave business that can leave him literally bone-tired, but for the wheels of justice to turn, there are always more skeletons to be bared and new secrets to be exhumed in BEAUTIFUL BONES -SAKURAKO’S INVESTIGATION-.

Okamikakushi: Masque of the Wolf: From the moment Hiroshi and his family arrive in Joga, he senses something odd about the isolated village. It’s not that the people are cold and aloof. Except for his beautiful class president, Nemuru, most welcome him quite warmly. But some also simply disappear. Students transfer out of his school without any notice, and Hiroshi’s next door neighbor Isuzu, who seems quite infatuated with him, warns him to stay away from the old part of town. The upcoming Haasaku Festival, which celebrates the town’s unique oranges, seems to be generating an unusual level of concern, and groups of masked people roam the streets by night, hunting… something. Could the legends of man-sized wolves roaming the mountains surrounding Joga be real? Who is the girl with the scythe? What is the real purpose of the festival? And how does this all revolve around something called a Temptation? Hiroshi and his new circle of friends have little time to solve these riddles before the answers will become far more dangerous and personal than he could ever imagine! Beneath the mask of society and the skin of humanity, something ancient awaits in Okamikakushi – MASQUE OF THE WOLF!

Blade & Soul: Trained since birth as the Clan of the Sword’s ultimate assassin, Alka has lived her entire life as a nearly emotionless human killing machine. Now, however, her Clan has been destroyed, her master murdered, and the Code she lives by leaves Alka just one final mission: to seek out those responsible and exterminate them. If that means taking on the impossible might of the Param Empire, and the demonic powers of their battle leader Jin Varrel, then so be it. But while Alka may be the hunter, she has also become the hunted. With a price on her head, she must evade or kill the bounty hunters intent on collecting her skin, and in the bloody shadow-world of assassins, that means there’s no one she can trust. It’s a ruthless battle for survival and revenge is a dish best served by the Code in BLADE & SOUL!

Knights-and-Magic_EP1_S7Bandai Visual continues to adjust how they’re selling their anime in Japan and the latest one to get that is Knight’s Magic. With this summer 2016 series, they’re being rather irregular in updates on the packaging for the show. While we’re closing in on the third and final set in just a couple of days we now have a look at the packaging with both sides of it. The thirteen episode series is getting a three-volume Blu-ray release that began on October 27th, 2017. The first two sets run for 12,000 yen each while the third, which has an extra episode, will be priced at 13,000 yen. No DVD releases are being produced.

The series was directed by Yuusuke Yamamoto based on the series composition by Michiko Yokote. Kenichiro Katsura served as the character designer with Studio 8bit handling the animation production.

The Japanese cast includes Rie Takahashi as Ernesti Echevarria, Ayaka Ohashi as Adeltrud Olter, Shinsuke Sugawara as Archid Olter, Yasuaki Takumi as Edgar C Blanche, Kazuyuki Okitsu as Dietrich Cunitz, and Shizuka Itou as Helvi Overlay.

The opening theme is “Hello! My World!!” by fhána and the ending theme is “You & I” by Ayaka Ohashi.

The light novels come from Hisago Amazaek-no with illustrations by Kurogin and it began under the Hero Bunko label back in 2013. With six volumes released so far and a manga adaptation from Takuji Katou, well, all signs were pointing to potential anime adaptation for a bit.

Plot Concept: A mecha otaku is reincarnated into another world as Ernesti Echevarria, also known as Eru. In this world, huge humanoid weapons known as Silhouette Knights exist. Dreaming of piloting those robots, Eru and his friends, Archid Olter and Adeltrud Olter, aim to become Knight Runners.

First ‘Haikara-san ga Tooru’ Anime Feature Gets DVD/BD Scheduling

$

© Kazunori Yamato / Kodansha

The new two-part theatrical adaptation of Haikara-san ga Tooru from Waki Yamamoto is getting its Japanese home video releases handled by Warner Bros. Japan. The first feature has now been set for an April 25th, 2018 release where it’ll come in four flavors. There’ll be a regular edition DVD priced at 5,000 yen and a regular edition Blu-ray at 6,000 yen. We’ll also get limited editions for both that are priced at 9,800 yen. The limited edition releases come with a booklet with interviews as well as a CD with new content being recorded for it. On-disc extras include the trailers, commercials and potentially more.

The Japanese includes Saori Hayami as Benio Hanamura, Mamoru Miyano as Shinobu Ijuin, Takahiro Sakurai as Tosei Aoe, Kazuya Nakai as Shingo Onijima, Yuki Kaji as Ranmaru Fujieda, Asami Seto as Tamaki Kitakouji, Unshou Ishizuka as Major Hanamora, Reiko Suzuki as Baaya, Kenta Miyake as Ushigorou, and Shizuka Itou as Kichiji.

The original manga was serialized in Shoujo Friend and had eight compiled volumes originally before getting a four-volume bunko edition. Here’s hoping Kodansha USA will take a chance on bringing out the bunko version here to help celebrate.

Waki has been creating manga for fifty years this year and it serves as a great anniversary present of sorts for her and longtime older fans out there. The property previously received an anime TV series back in 1978 but it ended abruptly along the way. it had a follow-up of a couple of live-action shows and a theatrical film in the years since.

Plot Concept: Benio Hanamura is a 17-year-old schoolgirl in Tokyo during the Taisho era. Benio lost her mother when she was very young and has been raised by her father, a high-ranking official in the Japanese army. As a result, she has grown into a tomboy—contrary to traditional Japanese notions of femininity, she studies kendo, drinks sake, dresses in often outlandish-looking Western fashions, and isn’t as interested in housewife duties as she is in literature. She also rejects the idea of arranged marriages and believes in a woman’s right to a career and to marry for love. Benio’s best friends are the beautiful Tamaki, who is much more feminine than Benio but equally interested in women’s rights, and Ranmaru, a young man who was raised to play female roles in the kabuki theater and as a result has acquired very effeminate mannerisms.

One Piece Vol. #53 Manga Review

Luffy gets flung pretty far almost from the start of this volume and ends up in a paradise filled with women who… hate men.

Creative Staff
Writer/Artist: Eiichiro Oda
Translation: Taylor Eagle
Adaptation: Lance Caselman

What They Say
When the Straw Hats come in contact with Bartholomew Kuma’s bare paw, this Warlord of the Sea’s teleportation power sends them flying to an unknown location. Luffy lands on a maiden island where he battles the local Amazons. But with the crew scattered all around the world, will they ever be able to meet up again?!

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):

The fourth volume of the five-volume Sabaody arc is one that focuses almost exclusively on Luffy, which isn’t a bad thing since it’s setting up for the next major arc to occur which is really focused on him pretty heavily. The opening of the volume has Luffy and the Straw Hats getting taken down pretty hard by Batholomew Kuma as he’s going at them with no regrets in the slightest. Every time he lands a really serious hit on them though, his teleportation power kicks in and bam, off they go to some unknown destination. Almost like ten little Indians, they’re all being thrown all over the place and panicking over suddenly lost friends. Luffy’s anger is pretty evident but that doesn’t stop him from getting swatted down, or swatted up as the case may be, and he finds himself flung pretty far away.
Where he lands is rather amusing and entertaining as he finds himself on Amazon Lilly, under the nation of Kuja, which is basically the island of women. No man shall set foot on the island, he quickly learns, and no male shall be born on the island either it appears. The warrior women that make up the island invariably leave at some time or another and come back pregnant and they only give birth to more women, thus continuing the cycle nicely. Luffy’s arrival occurs when the Snake Princess of the island, Boa Hancock, is away at a meeting elsewhere so those on the island are frantic to get rid of Luffy before she gets back and causes them no end of grief. Luffy’s pretty tenacious though and because of his nature, he’s actually able to befriend some of them before Hancock returns.
Boa Hancock and her sisters are pretty interesting as they’re cursed women who have ended up with control of the island. There’s a curse that they’re all under that keeps them from disrobing in front of others which if revealed would mean they’d probably lose control over everyone. Yet as much as they push Hancock and her sisters as being cruel, and they do have cruel moments such as turning some of the amazons into stone, they don’t come across as evil per se. Hancock issues the quick kill order for Luffy but his resilience is amusing in this instance and it impresses Hancock quite readily. Her personality and the relationship she has with her sisters based off of the secrets that they’re sharing gives them some nice background to work with that lightly ties into events in the past that Luffy has some experience with. The world building continues nicely here overall as another interesting area is essentially discovered.
In Summary:

Reading this volume of One Piece, the first I’ve read since the very first volume, was a whole lot of fun. Some of Oda’s layouts are just a bit too busy for my tastes but I like the rough nature of it at times as well as the way he can make some of his women so sensual under these kinds of designs. Hancock in particular really shines here for good reason. With this getting us closer to the end of the Sabaody arc and the start of the Impel Down arc, where I’m currently at in the anime version, this volume gave me some nice background on events there that I wasn’t familiar with. Jumping into the book at this point was fairly easy with the awkward way I’m dealing with the One Piece franchise and it left me with a lot of smiles and somewhat curious about checking out more at some point. The introduction of Hancock is definitely a very big selling point here as I think she’s definitely a fun and sexy confident character to have around.

Madman Entertainment is gearing up for some fun for fans of the Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood series as they’ve now scheduled two collections that contains the whole series. Set for May 9th, 2018 release for both, the first will have the episodes 1 through 33 while the second has 34 through 64 plus the OVA. All the sets are priced the same at $59.95 and will be bilingual while retaining the extras we’d seen before such as audio commentaries, clean opening and closings, and more to be determined.

Originally airing in 2009 and 2010, the series was directed by Yasuhiro Irie based on the series composition by Hiroshi Ohnogi. Based on the original work by Hiromi Arakawa, Hiroki Kanno handled the character designs and animation production was overseen by Bones.

The Japanese cast includes Rie Kugimiya as Alphonse Elric, Romi Park as Edward Elric, Iemasa Kayumi as Father, Megumi Takamoto as Winry Rockbell, Minami Takayama as Envy, Shinichiro Miki as Roy Mustang and Unshou Ishizuka as Van Hohenheim.

The English cast includes Maxey Whitehead as Alphonse Elric, Vic Mignogna as Edward Elric, Andrew Love as Jerso, Barry Yandell as Yoki, Bradley Campbell as Heinkel, Caitlin Glass as Winry Rockbell, Chris Cason as Gluttony, Chris Rager as Zampano, Christine Auten as Izumi Curtis, Christopher R. Sabat as Alex Louis Armstrong and Colleen Clinkenbeard as Riza Hawkeye.

Plot concept: In this world there exist alchemists, people who study and perform the art of alchemical transmutation—to manipulate objects and transform one object into another. They are bounded by the basic law of alchemy: in order to gain something you have to sacrifice something of the same value. The main character is the famous alchemist Edward Elric—also known as the Fullmetal Alchemist—who almost lost his little brother, Alphonse, in an alchemical accident. Edward managed to attach his brother’s soul to a large suit of armor. While he did manage to save his brother’s life, he paid the terrible price of his limbs. To get back what they’ve lost, the brothers embark on a journey to find the Philosopher’s Stone that is said to amplify the powers of an alchemist enormously; however, on the way, they start uncovering a conspiracy that could endanger the entire nation, and they realize the misfortunes brought upon by the Philosopher’s Stone.

Cute girls with magic powers combined with one slightly dorky unaware guy equals predictable and simple fun that plays it safe.

What They Say:
Haruo Yoshikawa always thought he was your average run-of-the-mill middle school student: great attendance record, no real plans for the future, and three adorable, loving sisters in Maika, Chiaki, and Fuyuno. Perfectly normal, right?

Wrong! What Haruo doesn’t know is that his three sneaky sisters have been keeping him in the dark about a little family secret: they’re all magic users! In the blink of an eye, Haruo’s “normal” life does a 180-degree turn to the insane with the arrival of the enchanting Ayumi, who for some reason seems very interested in turning Haruo

The Review:
Audio:
This audio presentation for this series follows a fairly standard formula for a series of this nature by having a stereo Japanese mix and an English 5.1 mix. The Japanese mix is done with a good 224 kbps encoding that gives it a fairly full feeling across the forward soundstage. The English 5.1 mix doesn’t feel the same since it provides a more distinct sense of placement for the dialogue. It doesn’t overwhelm in the same way which is good but also has it feeling more subdued. Dialogue on both tracks is clean and clear throughout and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally airing in early 2006, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. It was first released on three discs from ADV Films while the FUNimation collection bring it down to two discs with a seven/six format for the episode layout. Magikano doesn’t suffer from much in the way of problems as the presentation is very solid with great looking colors that hold up very well. There’s hardly any noise at all in the backgrounds which gives it all a very solid look. Colors aren’t oversaturated and cross coloration is pretty much absent here along with line noise which is a surprise. Though this isn’t a standout looking show in some regards, it’s a very strong looking presentation when it comes to the video quality of it which helps to make it all the better.

Extras:
The only extras included here are clean versions of the opening and closing sequences.

Based on the original manga by Takeaki Momose which started in 2003, Magikano is a thirteen episode series that quite simply plays it safe. Not only does the show itself play it safe but it feels like this is a token show of sorts for a US company, the kind that they needed to fill the gap left when some other standard harem comedy isn’t on the schedule. With the manga still ongoing you know that it’s going to be fairly predictable and without any true resolution, but they take that to a new level with the way this ends.

The series revolves around the Yoshikawa family, a family that’s made up of the eldest brother Haruo and his through younger sisters, Maiko, Chiaki and Fuyuno. The parents aren’t really discussed here nor are they present in any real way but that’s not the big secret. The big secret is that all three sisters are actually witches. Their beloved big brother Haruo is the odd member of the family in that he doesn’t have any magic powers. Due to this, Maika decided at an early age to cast counter spells on him to keep him safe and they utilize memory erasure spells in order to keep the secret. This way he gets to live a normal life and everyone is nice and happy. That can go on for only so long though before something else stumbles into their lives.

And that something is a young woman named Ayumi, a witch herself who has come to the household and by order of the Department of Magic is now their maid. It’s all very confusing at first but with a few well placed memory alteration spells, everything settles into place and Ayumi becomes something of a member of the household. The first few episodes deal with her arrival and how she fits into the scheme of things. Ayumi is the typical somewhat loud, outgoing and stubborn character who is only focused on her own goals. It’s sort of understandable though since the reason she’s there is to save her life by removing a curse she’s on her since childhood. The involvement of Haruo in all of it isn’t given more than a nod to ensure that there is a connection, but the end result is that she’s intent on turning him into a proper man and getting his powers back on track so that her life is saved.

With four girls under one roof there is plenty of material to work with before you even introduce the magic side of things. That’s not enough for Magikano though and we’re introduced to student council president Yuri, a proper young woman intent on keeping the schools moral code intact. The discovery that Ayumi is living with Haruo sends her off on a tizzy because she too is interested in Haruo and cannot abide by this for numerous reasons. And yeah, she’s a witch too. It’s like they’re falling out of the sky when you find out about this part of her life. Yuri is actually a nice addition to the show though since she falls in between Maika’s brother complex and Ayumi’s machinations. But even Yuri’s not enough because they have to introduce another young woman later named Marin who is a witch hunter, something that shouldn’t exist anymore due to how the magic using community reorganized awhile ago. Marin brings more tension to the show but also wacky comedy as her inept spells and accidental moments cause plenty of misery for everyone.

As the show progresses into the middle of its run, it hits up more material that really has me feeling that some of its best episodes are already behind it. With Ayumi being in the position she’s in, having a personal maid sent to assist her and take care of Haruo certainly wouldn’t be encouraging. The arrival of Rika brings us yet another attractive young woman who wears a maid uniform. She’s actually a bit more than a standard maid as she’s trying to get personal and combat data on all the people in Ayumi’s life as well as making sure that things are moving forward for Ayumi to remove the curse. To balance it out, Rika is given a straight face for everything and she likes playing jokes on people. Except that her jokes aren’t really jokes but rather ways of causing panic and fear in people so she can get her data. Rika brings in more competition when it comes to Haruo, something that plainly wasn’t needed.

Magikano does start to show some promise later when Michiru makes her mark on the human world and completely ruins the play that the student council is putting on during the culture festival. The Cinderella play is amusing enough in itself, as are the things the gang in general are doing for the culture festival, but once Ayumi begins tossing real magic into the event as the Evil Witch, Michiru takes it a step further and brings almost all of them into a magical world where she does her best to steal away Haruo and wreck havoc with everyone else. It’s got some cute literary moments to it as it deals with the various wolves from childhood tales and the Queen of Hearts and such, but the episode is overly frenetic and chaotic at times which is compounded by the audience seeing it all and trying to understand it. It just felt like too much without enough proper direction to it.

In terms of comedy, the show does have some saving graces, such as how it has Rika doing something to help Ayumi acquire Haruo’s attention. With a pair of panties passed down from Ayumi’s grandmother, they’re designed to triple her magical power and to fetch the eye of the one she loves the most. Ayumi, of course, puts them on quickly only to discover that the panties have a cute cat face on them and they talk. And oh does it talk, especially about how it likes to be pressed against her skin and then later commenting on whether she’s shaved there recently. The worst part for Ayumi is that she cannot take the panties off herself, it has to be done by the one she loves after he sees them. It’s all quite twisted and you have to wonder how any grandmother would consent to passing these on. But the humor is there, especially when Ayumi discovers that if other men see them, they fall in lust with her on the spot. Cue the horny zombies…

The two story points that come across in the next couple of episodes are pretty weak, though at least the second one isn’t a full-length deal. Episode eleven brings us to the Christmas holiday and you know with one guy and half a dozen women interested in him that things will just go badly. Misunderstandings, hurt feelings, uncertainty about what they mean to each other… all personified in how Ayumi handles everything of course. When she catches sight of Haruo shopping with another woman in an almost affectionate and comfortable way, she ends up becoming incredibly depressed. There seem to be only a couple of standard story ideas associated with the Christmas Eve holiday so it’s fairly easy to figure out where it will go. And once you know that, it’s a matter of whether you like the characters as to whether it’ll work for you. Having been fairly bland to them, this and the subsequent New Years Day storyline left me counting down the seconds for the show to be over with.

But, there has to be a proper ending for Magikano. There has to be the build-up to something big that will happen as you can’t leave the relationships like this. Even if it’s all going to be reset at the end, you cowardly writers, you have to bring in the potential of drama before you can close it out. With Haruo supposedly being this incredibly powerful person and Ayumi needing him to lift the curse, the potential for having it all come out must be dealt with. When Haruo seemingly can’t be affected by the memory removal spell, it signals the start of his Awakening, an event that’s made a mess of when Michiru steps in and reveals that she’s met them before and has worked her manipulations in the past. With a nod and a wink she essentially kidnaps Haruo so she can strap him to a chair in her mansion in the Magical World and suck his Demon King power out of him.

Flush with power, it’s easy to see why she thinks of not only conquering the Magical World but the real world as well. Nothing goes easy for Michiru though and having a gaggle of girls who love Haruo for different reasons coming after her gives her a challenge to deal with. But with the way the show has played out, predictability ensues and honestly you know exactly how it will go. This has been the weakest part of the show and it feels even more oppressive towards the end here. What really frustrated me with it was that not only did they give us a basic kind of reset in that the relationships are all back to the same thing at the end, they actually reversed time so that it can all be done once again. You know you’re showing your age if you’re having some Superman movie flashbacks going on after seeing that. The plot device at the end of the show for dealing with the threat of the ominous Demon King took what tiny little wind was in the shows sails at that point and let it float away.

In Summary:
Magikano engages in the cardinal sin of being… average. While it has some good production values to it, there isn’t anything here that separates it from many other series out there. The combination of magic users, high school girls and the harem motif combines well enough here but there isn’t anything here that sets it apart. As much as Magikano bothered me at times, it is a series that is sort of ideal for people new to anime to get into. It works through a lot of the archetype storylines that new fans will find positively hilarious and it does it all quite competently at that. For the older fans, it’s going to be a draw for very personal reasons such as voice actors or creative staff that are behind it, or even the allure of a particular character design. For me, the only saving grace towards the end was a pair of magical talking panties. I don’t know if that says more about more than the show itself, but I found that aspect to be the bright point of the entire series. Not worth it just for that, but if you’ve made it to the third volume, it might just be your highlight too.

Chi’s Sweet Adventure Episode #06 Anime Review

Chi gets groomed

What They Say:
Chi is a sweet playful kitten, always full of energy. She gets milk from Yohei, and is relaxing at home, nice and full. As she searches around the house for something exciting, she comes across Yohei walking with a handful of rubber balls. The balls bounce everywhere as he drops them, and Yohei and Chi can’t get more excited. The day ends with Chi and the family making a great memory together.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The series certainly delight the last time around just for the fact that we got Chi in a Halloween costume where she was anything but thrilled that such a thing happened. Chi’s reactions are often a highlight of the property and getting her in something so outside her usual comfort zone was definitely the right kind of treat. The show has been steadily improving for me as I’m adjusting to its groove and how it wants to operate, though still a bit frustrated by the “drop the viewer in the middle of it” aspect that got things underway. I’m also continuing to quite enjoy Chi in CG form as they’ve done a great job of capturing her playfulness.

While the cold open gives us some fun with Mom forgetting to feed Chi for breakfast, the main festivities get underway as we see Chi playing and Mom doing some vacuuming before it all goes badly. With some fun nightmare material for Chi in relation to the vacuum put into place, the reality is that it’s shedding season and fur is everywhere, which means it’s time give Chi some attention on this. Mom uses it as a chance for Dad to get more hands on like he wanted with Chi and do some of the grooming, but this is definitely a bad pairing in the making. The problem is that Chi obviously doesn’t want the brush while Dad reads up on it and fears for Chi’s life if he doesn’t get her taken care of. This leads to a comical battle between the two that plays out as you’d expect.

In Summary:
Seeing how Chi and Dad bond is definitely a good moment because not everything has to be filled with drama and chaos. Chi brings enough of that into the picture in general but I like the way her memory works here to associate the brush with something else. While Momm and Chi have some cute moments and I love just how much Chi enjoys all kinds of grooming, it’s all about Chi and she regularly steals the show once more.

Special Dessert Training

What They Say:
Raphael, the angel of temperance, has descended upon an unsuspecting baker! With salacious enthusiasm, she makes it her mission to help him make the perfect dessert.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With some sexy fun over the first two episodes, this one introduces us to Raphael, who is stacked in her own way and done up in a schoolgirl kind of design. With a school festival underway that she comes across, it’s cute to see her sampling the goods – especially zero calorie donuts. She decides that she’ll do her best to help the guy selling them to do better with it but it mostly means going to food stalls and trying lots of desserts, which leads to some blunt sexytimes that freaks everyone out. All of it helps to raise his social profile a bit, even if they’re just trying to get closer to her, but it helps to give him a bit more confidence that’s a nice contrast from her overconfidence.

In Summary:
Raphael’s attempt at finding a Messiah ends up revealing her someone far more suited to sweets than anything else and that works just fine for her. It is cute watching her being all gaga over what he’s produced and having fun with him even if she takes it to a whole other level in terms of her bouncy nature and how much skin she shows. It’s the kind of episode that’s basically a step too far and keeps it from being as much fun as it could be. But it’s also very in line with what I expect from this show and there’s definitely some appeal there in that once again.

“Traffic Surveying Buddies!”

What They Say:
Calico Tapio Chatorazawa, who’s got more energy than anyone, Russian Blue Kuehiko Roshihara’s a bit of a sourpuss. These two classmates will do all kinds of different jobs to learn how fun and hard it is to work!

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Working with window cleaning the last time around did not do me any favors as heights are totally not my thing. Working as traffic surveyors? That’s a little better though one can imagine some dangers there as well. What the pair are actually doing is traffic counting and their boss is offering up suggestions on how to avoid burns and the like while sitting outside doing this. It’s interesting in how they break down what’s counted, and with pedestrians as well, but the gag this time is that they’re doing counting within the river that’s nearby. Not that we’d see these creatures in there ever for the most part, and having it play out as it does makes for laughs as poor Kuehiko is totally overworked while Tapio has nothing to count.

In Summary:
The silliness continues nicely here as the boys work the traffic counting side of things but nothing goes as expected, which is par for the course. I do like that the show basically plays it straight at the start to show and respect the actual job before it goes off on its own weirdness in the animal world and this one definitely made me grin with what it did. A lot of cute little fun.
