Kitty Media has set a new release for next month with the acquisition of Kakushi Dere as the Lust-Luck Trilogy. The three-episode OVA series is planned for an October 23rd, 2018 release priced at $29.99 and $34.99 on DVD and Blu-ray respectively. It’ll be in English and Japanese with English subtitles. No extras are listed with it at the moment.

Casting hasn’t been revealed overall but Venus LeMay revealed on Twitter that she’d be playing Nonoka in the project.

The OVAs saw release in Japan during 2013 from MS Pictures based on the original work by Hyocorou. Pashmina handled the production for the project.

Plot Concept: In Episode One, Noknoka sends love letters, under an alias, to express her repressed lustful longing for Ryutaro, the elder brother of her classmate, Hiroaki. When Ryutaro continually ignores the letters, Nonoka reluctantly dates Hiroaki in order to get closer to Ryutaro to express her pent up lustful and mixed emotions to him in the flesh, literally!

Episode Two tells the story of Makoto who is unaware that his sexy step-sister Misaki harbors erotic feelings for him. One day, Makoto accidentally catches Misaki pleasuring herself on his bed and her dark secret is exposed! When they finally confess their true feelings to each other they decide to take their relationship to the next level!

Episode Three concerns a student named Taiki who obsesses and fantasizes about his high school crush, Mihashi, in various compromising and lewd sexual situations. After he reveals his hidden feelings to her, he learns about a nasty rumor circulating the campus that involves Mihashi and her Teacher. Taiki confronts his new girlfriend about the gossip and demands to know the truth. The question is- can Taiki handle the truth?

Get ready for a new anime series that will be coming in 2019 with an adaptation of Ken Wakai’s manga Joshi Kausei. The property began online back in 2013 and has received eight volumes in print form so far. No details regarding the adaptation were revealed but potential fans can check out the series early as the manga is available through Crunchyroll.

Plot Concept: Who needs dialog when you’re this cute? The beautiful (but unlucky) Momoko, the cool, collected Shibumi, and the refreshingly innocent Mayumi star in a “silent manga.” No speeches, no dialog! Just pictures, sound effects, and three high school girls living their daily lives.

Star Wars #53 Review

The battle becomes even more desperate.

Creative Staff:
Story: Kieron Gillen
Art: Salvador Larroca
Colors: Guru e-FX
Letters: VC’s Clayton Cowles

What They Say:
HAN SOLO…admiral? PRINCESS LEIA leads a squad to try and recover the secret that can save the rebel fleet…Unfortunately, it’s aboard the EXECUTOR.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The Hope Dies arc has been pretty decent overall so far though I continue to get the sense that it’ll be a solid trade read since it’s a little decompressed with the focus on the battle. Kieron Gillen is having a good time in shifting up where everyone is and how they interact with others so that it doesn’t feel like we’re getting another group event. And while Salvador Larroca’s character artwork doesn’t work for everyone it continues to work for me in being a midway point toward capturing the actual likenesses. With this issue, it’s heavy on the dogfight aspect of this storyline and that’s something that’s hard to capture but plays out very well here.

For Leia and the command infrastructure, we continue to see them basically in wait mode until the technical side can break through the coding that has put them into these dire straights. Leia’s definitely feeling some intense thoughts toward Trios at this point and she gets to make them actionable here as the command codes they need are actually on the Imperial super star destroyer. Now, this is where we get that kind of absurd moment in that they come up with a way to sneak onto the ship under the guise of Trios in order to steal the codes but you kind of look past that in the chaos of the battle. It’s good classic serial adventure kind of stuff and it sets the stage for a much more interesting installment coming next since Vader is right behind them.

What makes up the bulk of the book as this plays out is following the battle itself. With Vader out there sniping at the Rebels and taking some hard shots at the Falcon, there’s still the attempts at trying to launch the rest of the fighters. It’s a fun sequence as you get Luke trying to figure out a way to signal Ackbar how to do it since he’s watching the fleet that they built crumble around them with so many ships falling to the incoming attacks from the capital ships. It’s engaging to watch as Han ends up figuring out how to get back into the action after the Falcon gets taken down for the moment and combining that with some of the dialogue, particularly the whole Admiral Solo bit, just hits a certain sweet spot. The Falcon crashing bit didn’t work for me but the rest of it was a lot of fun.

In Summary:
The main Star Wars book has another solid installment as we get to the middle point of the arc and everything shifts with it. It’s here that we get a good battle sequence further underway as Larroca captures it very well with the movement and style while giving it the kind of backgrounds that adds to the scale at times. The subplot with Leia is one that is kind of ridiculous in a way but it’s also something that I’m looking forward to more of because it’ll be fun to watch with her having to go up against Vader and whatever else they find on the Imperial ship.

We’ve known that it was coming for awhile but now the official site has confirmed an October 5th, 2018 debut on the same network and time, which should have the simulcast through Crunchyroll landing at the same time as the first cour as well when they firm that up.

The series has Ayumu Watanabe directing based on the series composition by Hideo Takayashiki. Kenichi Oonuki is working on the character designs with Studio Deen animating it.

He measures how good players are by how much money they make, and he intends to be on top and stay there, and as such is always looking for players to challenge and does everything to ensure that he is better than they are.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra Annual #2 Review

A long way to go for the story but it still works.

Creative Staff:
Story: Simon Spurrier
Art: Caspar Wijngaard
Letterer: VC’s Joe Caramagna

What They Say:
One’s a cyborg with a bad attitude, the other’s a cold-blooded reptile. They’re happily married. They’ve been hired by a mysterious contact to bag an ultra-deadly monster from the heart of an ancient temple. N.B.: For “mysterious contact” read DOCTOR APHRA, who — and this will shock you — is definitely up to something. N.B.: For “happily married” read THIS IS GOING TO GET MESSY.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
While annuals continue to be one of my least liked aspects of comics, the Star Wars side has been a bit better in having them be meaningful in what they do. But not always. With this one we get something that’s basically a side story that takes place within an earlier part of the run with series regular Simon Spurrier writing it. He’s gotten a decent handle on the characters so far and with Aphra being the only regular here it’s easy enough to work with. The book has the artwork and coloring done by Caspar Wijngaard and it’s pretty great throughout, though Apha isn’t really here until toward the end of it. There’s a good sense of location design to it and I like the character artwork as it deals with the slightly off-kilter stuff that you get with aliens in the Star Wars universe.

The premise for this one takes us past the outer rim to where there are just number classifications of planets. It’s here that a lot of strange things take place at times and those that want to exist fully out of the Imperial system operate. The focus is on a pair of monster hunters named Winloss and Nokk, a human and Trandoshan pairing that’s definitely amusing. They’re very distinctive in terms of how they hunt monsters as they won’t hurt them but they will acquire them for the right price. A bit of morality, you might say. They’re not high ranked but they’ve been called in by Aphra, who appears as a headshot on a hologram for much of the book interacting with them, to go after a creature that she needs acquired. Winloss and Nokk are definitely an amusing in-love couple that operates as a team as they don’t bicker but there’s definitely a lot of banter that you wouldn’t get from most other relationships.

Aphra has them going down deep into a series of ruins in order to get the oversized creature that needs it very quickly and that has them getting tempted by some artifacts that they come across from time to time and touches of what’s here. It’s not a big archaeological dive like one might get from Aphra but as we get to the gimmick of the book and the time limit and all it makes a lot of sense. There’s a decent bit of pacing to it when you get down to it but the book does feel somewhat overly long as it progresses in getting to said point. But the journey has its moments and the big reveals are definitely comically suited for a character like Aphra. There isn’t any sort of really big payoff in the classic sense since it’s a standalone tale but it provides for an enjoyable read overall.

In Summary:
Doctor Aphra is a fun character in general and this is a fun enough book overall, even if her presence in a lot of it is just a headshot hologram encouraging the journey. It makes for an enjoyable read the second time around once you have the trick of what’s going on but it was fun in the discovery phase too, especially if you figure out the trick ahead of time and enjoy the journey. Spurrier continues to handle the Star Wars world well, though I hope he gets the opportunity to orchestrate something big at some point, what Caspar Wijngaard’s artwork is really great and I hope we see him providing something for a miniseries or guesting on a main Star Wars book in the near future.

The Dreaming #1 Review

The first steps into new dangers.

Creative Staff:
Story: Simon Spurrier
Art: Bilquis Evely
Colors: Mat Lopes
Letterer: Simon Bowland

What They Say:
There is a place where stories are born. Today its walls lie slashed and bleeding. Dream has abandoned his realm, and until he is found, its residents must protect its broken borders alone. But the most senior storysmiths are tormented by invasive secrets, the warden Lucien is doubting his own mind—and beyond the gates something horrific waits with tooth and talon.

Only Dora, the monstress, finds opportunity in madness, stealing dreams for the highest bidder. But she has no idea how deep the danger lies. Meanwhile, in Dream’s gallery, something new is growing…

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The return of the Sandman world under the Sandman Universe barrier gets underway in full with the launch of The Dreaming. After the standalone that set the stage and introduced various elements, Simon Spurrier ushers in the fuller story here as we get to know the characters more. It’s one that’s certainly very dialogue-driven with a good bit of exposition but it sets things in motion well enough if you hadn’t read the other special. It also looks great with Bilquis Evely delivering a really strong looking issue with lots of detail and a sense of wonder about The Dreaming, which Mat Lopes captures very well in bringing to life further through the color design. It’s a good looking book and one that even as verbose as it is ends up being very easy to read with Simon Bowland producing another round of great lettering with diverse characters and styles of speech here.

With The Dreaming beginning to crack thanks to the prior events and Lucien having stage-played the role of Dream himself in order to ease the minds of those that reside there, the panic is on to figure out what to do next. Matthew at least makes clear that his flying around to find their Lord won’t do any good as the last time he went on walkabout and was captured ended up costing seventy years. Lucien’s doing his best to provide a sense of continuity amid all of those while Matthew knows the reality. Everyone else is just going about their business, though Merv is really struggling with all the Blanks that have shown up that he’s trying to corral. The emphasis that they’re like blank canvases is an interesting one that I can see coming back later in some way, possibly as though we’re going to see a reconfiguration (modernization?) of The Dreaming for the 21st century through this.

The heavier focus for this issue is on Dora herself, as she’s going to be key to a lot of what’s going on. There’s anger about her being in The Dreaming, though she was given specific permission by Dream to be there, but with the way she leaps into dreams, massages them and steals them, it doesn’t sit well to say the least. While some may cringe at the included sexual aspects, I like that we learn how she’s cauiqinr them and giving them to a duke of Hell named Balam and that she’s using him for sex as well. It has its quirky moments here but it provides a connection to that world and its cast while providing for something that’s a bit more tangible in a way than most of the other characters. Dora’s the one that feels the most human and seeing her seek out what she needs and getting it on her tems definitely delights.

In Summary:
It’s a quieter start for a series but one that feels very much in the Sandman vein in the way I had hoped for. It’s a very dialogue-driven book in a world where most things that I’ve seen the last few years tend to be lighter on it and filled with quips. But the mood is well-staged by the opener as Spurrier gets a handle on the characters voices and their motivations. It skims over most of them with Lucien getting a good bit of time alongside Dora while Merv and his problems with the Blanks provides for some additional fun. Bilquis Evely is a perfect presence on this series in capturing the look of this world and I can’t wait to see what creativity is in store here through it all.
