War broke out between the Empire and the neighboring Federation committed a border transgression in entering the Empire. During the transition into wartime, she was assigned to observation duty, but a surprise attack by the Federation forces Tanya to engage in battle with the Federation’s mage troops. She’s greatly outnumbered with no chance of waiting for allies to arrive, but if she tries to flee, she’ll be charged with the capital crime of deserting under enemy fire. The fall 2018 anime series Karakuri Circus is coming to us from Studio VOLN through Amazon with a thirty-six episode plan for it. The official site is rolling out some new promotion for the ninth episode that’s set to land on December 6th, 2018 that gives us a taste of what’s to come. Satoshi Nishimura is directing it based on the series composition by Toshiki Inoue and Kazuhiro Fujita. Takahiro Yoshimatsu is the character designer for it.

The Japanese cast includes Chihiro Ueda as Masaru Saiga, Rikiya Koyama as Narumi Katō, Megumi Hayashibara as Shirogane Saiga, Takahiro Sakurai as Eiryō Ashihana, Nozomu Sasaki as Gii Christoph Resh, Tomoyo Kurosawa as Talanda “Lise” Liselotte Tachibana, Marina Inoue as Vilma Thorne, Hisao Egawa as Shinobu Nakamachi, Ryōta Iwasaki as Noriyuki “Nori” Nakamachi, Kaito Ishikawa as Hiroo “Hiro” Nakamachi, Jun Fukuyama as Arlecchino, Jouji Nakata as Pantalone, Aoi Yūki as Columbine, and Ryūzaburō Ōtomo as Dottore.

The anime project comes from the manga by Kazuhiro Fujita as serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday between 1997 and 2006 where it had forty-three volumes produced for it.

Fujita’s not exactly a well-known name but he’s had some very popular works. His Ushio & Tora series that finished in 1996 got a big remake recently and he’s currently producing the Sou-Bou-Tei Must Be Destroyed Manga that’s in Weekly Shonen Sunday. His other big series is the twenty-nine volume run of Moonlight Act, which makes us wonder if that’s being looked at as well.

Check out the official site and Twitter.

Plot Concept: The story focuses on Masaru Saiga, a fifth-grade boy who aims to become a puppeteer. After Sadayoshi Saiga — the CEO of the giant home telephone maker Saiga and Masaru’s father — passes away, Masaru inherits 18 billion yen. Masaru is targeted for his wealth, and is saved by two people. Narumi Katō is a man who has studied Kung-Fu and has a weird illness called “Zonapha Syndrome,” and Shirogane is a silver-haired woman who controls the puppet “Arurukan” (Harlequin). Together, Masaru, Narumi, and Shirogane get thrown into various conspiracies by those who would try to steal Masaru’s fortune.

Help Us Celebrate The Holidays With Our December 2018 Donation Drive

This year has been a rough one across the board and while we continue to bring out a lot of reviews and news, we’re definitely struggling a bit here. With it being a new month we’ve restocked our rewards for those that donate to the site to keep us operation and we’re keeping things going where if you pick two $25 rewards ($50 total), you can get a third $25 reward as a bonus if it was listed in 2017 or earlier. We’re also doing picky any three $15 rewards for a $30 event for the remainder of the year!  Check the spreadsheet below!

Back at the end of March 2016, we ended up celebrating our 18th year of working this particular kind of job. Way back in 1998, I had started with a little sliver of a page on a Netcom personal account that ended up becoming AnimeOnDVD.com. Life has taken us in some interesting places along the way and I’ve been utterly blessed with knowing so many people over the years – and as I find at conventions and elsewhere, I’ve been a big part of a lot of other people’s lives by the continual presence and even personality as some have told me.

As you can imagine, things change a lot over the years from when we were able to generate revenue from DVD Express back in the day along with Right Stuf as affiliate partnerships were the way most sites survived and funded their operations. The changing nature of the advertising landscape has been difficult for a lot of places in the years since as affiliate deals are largely gone and advertising is even harder. I have always worked the goal of being 99% anime/manga focused in terms of our advertising, never doing pop-ups, pop-unders, banners with sounds, and all that other problematic junk that I hate myself. I wanted advertising that was relevant to the readership.

Sadly, it’s just not a sustainable side anymore.

I ended up quite humbled last year when I needed a bit of help with a medical bill from some surgeries I had and part of that was because the advertising side just doesn’t cut it anymore. In doing my tax prep this past month, and I’ll be quite honest here, we made about $15k last year. And this site is my primary job. Suffice to say, with two teenage girls, it’s just not going to work this way much longer. So I want to try something that I’ve seen some other sites I frequent have done over the years, such as Penny Arcade back in the day, by making us fully powered by you, the fans.

As you can see, we’ve set up the GoFundMe page with a where we’re doing monthly runs with a goal of $1000 and have gotten December 2018 underway with a whole lot of new rewards added in recently! Don’t forget, we are a small business! While I had been upfront with the overall yearly goal, I suspect this format will work better and we’ll be stocking with a lot more rewards as well. Doing this will help us to basically get essentially a hair above the poverty line according to the government. And I’m more than fine with that because I love what I do and I want to do what I love. That’s why I’m crazily up at 5:30 in the morning and plugging away at stuff throughout the entire day. It’s why I write reviews in the late afternoon, monitor news throughout the day, watch and write about primetime shows, dig into comic books and manga, follow conventions, review new releases of movies, DVDs, and Blu-rays. It’s why I post throughout the day on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest – so I can keep information available and fresh for my followers. It’s why I spend time each week distributing materials to our wonderful reviewers who can offer different viewpoints so we have variations in material. I live and breathe this stuff. And I love sharing it with you all.

At our current settings, we’re producing between 30-40 articles a day during the week and about a dozen each day over the weekend. That’s what we do and that’s what you’d be funding. The news, the opinions, the reviews. The social media interactions.

Those that donate will be able to choose DVD/BD rewards that I’ve got as I continue to purge my own library with $15, $25, $50, $100 levels. You can see the spreadsheet below that you’ll be able to choose from after donating!

Having done this for 18 years, it’s definitely a hugely difficult decision to do this because I’ve found a lot of ways to make it work over the years. But it’s becoming impossible to do so and this site, this audience, is not something that I want to lose, so I want to try this route and see what we can do.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support, interest, and friendship over the years from so many of you.

Help spread the word!

Two More Board DC Universe ‘Stargirl’ TV Series

$

The Stargirl series for the DC Universe service is working through getting the pieces in order. With the lead set previously, we now get into more of the cast and two more have been added – but without their roles specified. The additions include Yvette Monreal and Christopher James Baker. It’s being listed that they are known DC Comics characters and not original characters for the series. Monreal is in the upcoming Rambo 5 while Baker was seen recently in True Detective and Ozark.

The cast includes Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore.

The character was the first one that Geoff Johns created upon joining DC Comics back in 1999 and he’ll be writing for the series and serving as an executive producer along with Greg Berlanti and working with Sarah Schechter. The series is set for a 2019 debut with a thirteen episode run planned. This isn’t using the Stargirl that we saw in the Legends of Tomorrow series during its trip to the 1940’s, however, as it’s focusing on the teenaged Courtney Whitmore that Johns created.

“Obviously, Stargirl was first character I created for DC,” Johns told Deadline back in July. “Most important, Courtney Whitmore was inspired by my sister who passed away,” he added. “To have an opportunity to tell a story celebrating this superhero was literally the first thing I wanted to do because it is so personal to me. Also, a character that speaks to being young, to a legacy and to pushing forward seems so important to me nowadays.”

Plot Concept: Courtney Whitmore’s smooth-going high school experience is derailed when her mother marries and moves the household from Los Angeles to bucolic Blue Valley in distant Nebraska. Struggling to adapt, Courtney discovers her stepfather has a secret past as a superhero sidekick. She also discovers an artifact of immense power, a long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, and Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes.

Megazone 23 Part 2 Anime DVD Review

Half a year after the first piece, Yahagi’s back and trying to understand just what Eve wants from him.

What They Say
Charged with a murder he didn’t commit, Shogo Yahagi is once again on the run from the military and the police. But this time he’s not flying solo – guided by the artificial intelligence EVE and surrounded by a gang of renegade bikers – it’s choppers versus mechas to the end!

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this release brings us the original Japanese language as well as the at the time new English language dub. Having seen this show so many times over the years, it just doesn’t feel right to listen to it in any other language as I’ve gotten so used to it so we listened to this release in its original language of Japanese. The stereo mix is very well done here considering the age of the materials and it sounds very solid without anything going too high or clipping. We did spot check the English track in a few scenes in its 5.1 mix and liked how that came out a lot. While there isn’t a lot of heavy directionality to it, everything sounds much more crisp and distinct.

Video:
Originally released back in 1986, the transfer for this OVA is presented here in its original full frame format. The release looks good but some of the basic problems with the materials of this age show through. There’s a fair bit more noticeable dirt and scratches on the print and some of the pastel and soft colored backgrounds show more movement to them than before. They’re not breaking up in a bad way, but if you get a wide section of the same color it’s not going to maintain a solid feel for too long. Colors look good overall though with no noticeable cross coloration. There’s some aliasing in various fast motion scenes but it felt more just a part of the animation style than anything else. While not as smooth and good looking as the first piece of the series, this is probably one of the better-looking releases of this title in some time in standard definition.

Packaging:
Going with the same layout and color style as the first volume, we get the green stripes along the top and bottom and the very stylized character artwork in the middle. The differences in the styles between the two releases are striking just from the cover art. The original logo along with a translated one along the top with what I consider a very important phrase kept, “Original Video Animation”. I was so pleased to see that left there since it’s something that’s really fallen into disuse over the years but is very important to this show. The back cover uses the stripe effect a bit more and provides a decent summary of the show and several shots of animation. The discs extras and technical features are all clearly listed and easy to read. The insert is a gorgeous four-panel fold-out poster of done in a black and white watercolor feel of Yui and Shogo by Umetsu. The reverse side of the poster has a number of production sketches and a lot of text going over the origins of the sequel and a discussion with the director over what his message and goals were as well as a look at the various characters and mechanics of the series.

Menu:
The menu layout uses the varying green stripe effect to a good use here with the logo and some of the sketch designs along the top and the few selections lined underneath it set to some of the strong instrumental music from the show. The layout is easy to navigate and has a few cute 80’s quirks with the computer style with fast access times and now transitional animations to deal with.

Extras:
The only included extra here is a production art gallery. Sadly, a commentary track was not done for this release and already the show feels like it’s missing something.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
At the time of the first OVAs release, there was plenty of controversy about it in general, from the violence to the sex, by the time the second one came around the controversy shifted to the look of the show. The violence and the sex stepped up a bit (though still pales next to more recent material) but the changes in the style of the show generally put people in the love it or hate it camps. Combined with a thinner storyline than the original it didn’t help for a lot of fans of the original. For English speaking fans, the second OVA ended up being rather elusive in coming over in any form, though there were some English dubbed versions used for educational purposes I believe in Asia.

The second OVA picks up six months after we last see Yahagi dragging his bloodied body down the streets of the city. In the time since then he’s gone to ground and hasn’t been seen by the military that’s been looking for him. The military has used their time wisely by beefing up their numbers in recruitment and using the revelations made during Yahagi’s escapades as a way of cementing their authority and control. While they’ve survived their initial meeting with the other craft, the ship is now in negotiations with another starship with the aid of those in the financial sector. More and more people know what’s really going down but there are still plenty of sheep out there.

While BD and use his use of Shiratori have the military in shape and ready for just about anything, especially with the new ships they’ve built to go outside of the Megazone itself, Yahagi’s time underground has been put to good use as well. With the knowledge he does have, which is plentiful and limited at the same time, he’s managed to bring together a good sized youth gang of bikers that while maybe not believing him completely have thrown in with him anyway. A lot of it seems to come from the way he seems to know about the changes Eve has gone through as her influence is still strong. Her current controlled material hasn’t won her any fans and has ended up with people like this listening to her old material in seclusion. With their base under an old abandoned embassy, Yahagi and his group of ruffians stock up on weapons and wait for the right moment to do? something.

Two pieces fall into place that brings Yahagi back to the surface. Eve’s return to the situation with her constant calling for the Operator of 7G lets Yahagi know that some remnant of who she once was is alive and well down in the bowels of the second city and that he has to get there to find out what it is she wants him to do. The second thing is the return of Yui to his life. The two haven’t seen each other since he initially left to find Eve and he never looked for her again since he didn’t want to drag her into everything. But now she’s back in his life and ends up falling in with the biker crowd pretty easily. Before you know it, she’s sporting a new hairstyle and learning how to ride a bike. The number of women in the group help her feel at ease, but it’s only when she and Yahagi get back under the covers do things really move well.

While there is a lot going on in this OVA through the first two-thirds of it, it really doesn’t feel like it’s going anywhere. We get a lot of action scenes based around the military and their fight with the mysterious tentacle enemy and we get a lot of movement with Yahagi’s group as they move around the city and fill in the blanks, but there’s no real drive towards anything. This does hit in the third act when Yahagi makes the decision to finally go after Eve so he can find out what she wants and this leads into heavy exposition and plot material, but it’s just so far into things that you can imagine plenty of people falling off long beforehand. I love the final third of the show and the way it plays out and all that it reveals, but it’s a bit of an effort to get there.

Visually, this OVA is like night and day from the first one when it comes to character designs. The original was the epitome of 80’s style designs. But when they moved to the second OVA, all of the original character designs were dropped for various reasons other than Eve. Her design is the only bit of real continuity throughout the three parts to this series with Mikimoto only getting more and more detailed as it progressed. The director ended up bringing in one of his favorite designers at that time, Yasuomi Umetsu, who years later would become somewhat infamous for his OVA series Kite. Umetsu’s career has been interesting overall, from those two extremes and with some hentai releases in-between. Umetsu’s style is completely different of what the first OVA did and this one ended up with very strong realistically built characters. With a lot of key animation to them (and with Umetsu as the key animation director), there is a striking amount of fluidity to them that sometimes is too fluid, giving it a really strange feel. All of the gang members are outlandish in their designs, heavy with paint and colors. By contrast, the military characters are all over the map in body shapes and feel. In particular, BD changes completely and is now a purple haired muscleman of sorts. Yahagi’s transformation isn’t too much of a shock since you can imagine him changing his look during his time hiding out, but when you have such differences with characters like Yui and BD who don’t resemble their original in any way and you’re going to alienate a lot of people.

There are still a lot of little jokes and nods throughout this OVA that are fun to find. Since it’s been ages since I saw this I was only able to pick out a few (and there’s no commentary track to help with the others) but some of my favorites were just seeing the pinball games for Silver Hawks and Thundercats. I also have to wonder during some of the biker sequences when they hit the city just how much of it was homaged by Otomo in Akira, such as the scene of them going down a straightway and the horns honking and the flag waving. It felt like a cheaper version of the same scenes early on in Akira and this predated it by about four years, release-wise anyway.

In Summary:
MegaZone 23 Part 2 is a fascinating watch for a lot of reasons, particularly to view the differences in style and storytelling as the series evolved with its different crews. This’ll annoy the heck out of some people but others may find it fascinating. Watching this for me is like watching something in a film history class where the times and context of the film are just as if not more important than the show itself. The things that made up the production become more interesting than the end product itself. Part 2 is an enjoyable romp for a lot of reasons but I still think they failed at some very basic storytelling aspects and missed chances to really expand on things but providing more in-show context and emotion. In Part 2, action trumps plot.

AnimeLab Begins Streaming ‘Lucky Star’ Anime

Australian streaming service AnimeLab has added another bit of modern history to their catalog lineup with Lucky Star now available on the service. The series is available in full in its original Japanese language with English subtitles as well as the dubbed version that was previously produced.

Check out our review of the series and our ten years later retrospective.

The show originally ran in 2007 and started off as series of elaborate releases from Bandai and Kadokawa that eventually slimmed down a lot over time as sales weren’t as strong as they had thought they would be. The Japanese releases are also a bit tricky in that the Blu-ray releases there are upscales, which has us wondering if FUNimation will be releasing it in that format. With previous upscales, of which there have been almost none lately, they do list that they are that and not native HD releases.

Plot Concept: What’s the best way to eat dessert? Do twins really have a psychic connection? What kind of guys are into moe girls? These are the kinds of questions that float through the inquisitive mind of anime super-fan Konata Izumi. When she’s not lost in her favorite manga or logging hours in one of her online games, she’s debating the mysteries of the universe with the best friends a girl could ask for.

And while they might not share Konata’s refined eye for anime tropes and trivia, she doesn’t hold it against them. After all, Miyuki Takara is a precious moe dream girl, and twin sisters Tsukasa and Kagami are always there when she needs a helping hand or a notebook to copy homework from (even if Kagami insists on being totally tsundere about it). At the end of the day, Konata could look far and wide, but she’d never find a better group of girls to get her through the horrors of high school!

The third season of Attack on Titan is now underway and Pony Canyon has set the Japanese home video release plans. The first volume landed back in October and the second was planned for December 5th, which we have the artwork for. It began the release run on October 17th, 2018.

Based on the original manga by Hajime Isayama, Tetsuro Araki served as the general director with Koizuka Masashi working on the series composition for the first season. Yasuko Kobayashi worked on the character designs while Kyoji Asano served as the Chief Animation Director. WIT STUDIO produced the animation.

The Japanese cast includes Yuuki Kaji as Eren Jaeger, Marina Inoue as Armin Arlelt, Yui Ishikawa as Mikasa Ackerman, Daisuke Ono as Erwin, Hiroshi Kamiya as Levi, Keiji Fujiwara as Hannes, Kishō Taniyama as Jean Kirschtein, Hiro Shimono as Conny Springer, Romi Park as Hanji, Ryota Ohsaka as Marco Bodt, Shiori Mikami as Christa Renz, Tomohisa Hashizume as Bertholt Hoover, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Reiner Braun, Yu Kobayashi as Sasha Browse and Yu Shimamura as Annie Leonhardt.

Series premise: Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.

After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls. Based on Hajime Isayama’s award-winning manga, Shingeki no Kyojin follows Eren, along with his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his childhood friend Armin Arlert, as they join the brutal war against the titans and race to discover a way of defeating them before the last walls are breached.
