‘Dark Ark: After The Flood’ Series Announced

Pretty much my favorite series out of AfterShock Comics, the Dark Ark series wrapped up earlier this year. Now, the publisher has revealed that Cullen Bunn and Juan Do are returning for more with Dark Ark: After The Flood. The new series is set for an October 2nd, 2019 debut from the publisher and they’ve rolled out a bit of information about it. In addition to a regular edition cover, Mike Rooth is producing a lenticular cover while Andrei Bressan is handling the incentive cover.

“This new series picks up right where the last one left off, but a crazy new direction quickly comes to the forefront,” said writer Cullen Bunn. “The “Dark Ark” has found land. Now, a society must form–a society of monsters, many of which hate each other. To complicate matters, the man who held a tentative control on the monsters, Shrae, is dead, and his daughter has taken his powers as her own. Khalee is not ready for the magic at her beck and call, and she’s not ready for the demonic orders coming to her from the Great Beyond. The first of those orders: make sure Noah’s Ark reaches the same landing point as Shrae’s Ark. After all, now that the monsters have survived their journey, they need something to snack on.”

Plot Concept: Two arks were built to survive the Flood. One was filled with the creatures of the natural world. The other was populated by…everything else.

Now, the monsters of the DARK ARK have beaten Noah’s ark to land, and a new societal order must be created—one based on the rule of monsters. Khalee, a new sorceress, must maintain order amidst the chaos., but her otherworldly masters have a new task for her. She must devise a way to bring Noah’s Ark to the monsters…because the beasts must feed.

Discotek Media Acquires ‘Yowamushi Pedal Re:ROAD’&‘Re:RIDE’ Anime Compilation Films

Discotek Media previously picked up the original compilation film for the Yowamushi Pedal franchise but now they’ve grabbed two more for a single collection with Yowamushi Pedal Re:ROAD and Yowamushi Pedal Re:RIDE. This release is scheduled for a July 30th, 2019 debut from the distributor with it in its original Japanese language with English subtitles. It’ll be released only on Blu-ray and priced at $24.95 for the 180-minute running time.

The property stars Daiki Yamashita as Sakamichi Onoda, Kousuke Toriumi as Shunsuke Imaizumi, Jun Fukushima as Shōkichi Naruko, Hiroki Yasumoto as Shingo Kinjō, Showtaro Morikubo as Yūsuke Makishima, Kentarou Itou as Jin Tadokoro, Daisuke Kishio as Junta Teshima, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Hajime Aoyagi, Junichi Suwabe as Toji Kanzaki, Ayaka Suwa as Miki Kanzaki, Megumi Han as Aya Tachibana, Tomoaki Maeno as Juichi Fukutomi, Tsubasa Yonaga as Sangaku Manami, Tetsuya Kakihara as Jinpachi Tōdō, Satoshi Hino as Hayato Shinkai, Hiroyuki Yoshino as Yasutomo Arakita, Atsushi Abe as Tōichirō Izumida, Koji Yusa as Akira Midōsuji, Hirofumi Nojima as Kōtarō Ishigaki, Tomokazu Seki as Eikichi Machimiya and Yukari Tamura as Kotori Himeno.

Property concept: Sakamichi Onoda is a rather timid, anime-loving first-year student at Sohoku High School. Since the fourth grade, he had been riding his commuter bicycle 90-kilometers to and from Tokyo’s otaku hot spot, Akihabara after school. Upon entering high school, he tried to join the anime research club, after meeting Imaizumi Shunsuke, a renowned cyclist since middle school, and Naruko Shoukichi, who swept the Kansai cycling championship, he ended up joining the competitive cycling club. All kinds of trials and rigorous training awaited Onoda, but with the support of his many friends and upperclassmen, the talented road racer inside him began to awaken!

Re:RIDE: Initially, when a fourth grade Sakamichi Onoda started biking to Akihabara every week, it was an effort to save money. Driven by a need to improve his own skills, Junior pro cyclist Shunsuke challenges Sakamichi to a race, and while the outcome might seem obvious, there are some surprises in store for both of them before they reach the finish line!

Re:ROAD: Picking up right where season one left off, the Inter-High is in full swing, and Day 2 is still undecided. There are only a few kilometers left until the end, but this grueling race isn’t just about who will cross the finish line first–it’s about who will get there at all!

Kokkoku: Moment By Moment Complete Collection Blu-ray Anime Review

A new kind of out of body experience.

What They Say:
Juri Yukawa needs a timeout from her life. She’s failed 19 job interviews, she’s stuck living with her crazy family, and her chances of escaping to a life of her own are becoming increasingly remote. Suddenly, all of that becomes unimportant when her brother and nephew are kidnapped and held for an impossibly high ransom. That’s when Juri’s grandfather reveals an incredible secret: a mystical stone that allows Juri, her father and her Grandpa to enter the state of Stasis, where everyone else in the world is frozen in time! That should make rescuing their family easy, right? Wrong, because there’s a sinister organization working against them who also can literally beat the clock!

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation brings us the original Japanese language track in stereo while the English mix gets a 2.0 mix as well, both of which are encoded using the Dolby TrueHD lossless codec. The series has its outlandish moments along the way but the bulk of it is filled with basic dialogue. There are some areas where it shines a bit more in how it works with thoughts and levels, but most of it is pretty standard drama material with a few quick bumps here and thee of action It’s often kept to just two people at a time so it has a nice and small feeling to it that serves the material well and it all hits a good stride quickly. I flipped between the two language tracks regularly and they both come across clean and clear and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally released in 2018, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p using the AVC codec. The twelve episode series are spread across two discs in a standard nine/three format. Animated by Geno Studio, the show has an interesting look to it where it has a rough and angular look to it when it comes to the character designs, especially the men, that at times is a bit off-putting. It almost looks like this is a budget show because of it but there’s something of a stylistic choice here in adapting the manga. The encoding captures the look of this well with colors coming across clean and solid, the moments of motion and activity being smooth and problem free, and no issues such as noise or breakup in general. Detail holds up well with a lot of it in the backgrounds as the characters are a bit simpler. It may not be the most visually exciting show out there but the encoding captures it well.

Packaging:
The packaging for this release comes in a standard sized Blu-ray case where we get a great key visual image that works a kind of split with a red side/dark side approach. The character artwork looks fantastic here and doesn’t quite capture the simpler look of the show itself but it’s definitely eye-catching in all the right ways. The logo drives me a little nuts as I can imagine the o’s as u’s at first and there’s just something that doesn’t click for me. The back cover goes for an all-red background with Juri get the character slot along the right that looks good. Te strip along the top brings in some fun shots from the show and we get a decent little summary of the premise that covers the basics. The extras are clearly and cutely listed and the production credits along the bottom gets everything into place right. The technical grid breaks everything down accurately so you know exactly how the set is put together, though the white on black strained the eyes just a touch with the thin font. No show related inserts are included nor is there a reversible cover.

Menu:
The menus for this release work the static approach where we get a third of the screen given over to the menu on the left. It’s done with a dark black background and white slots for the episodes titles and numbers that are quick and easy to select. The rest of the screen is given over to really nice visuals, the first with a cast shot and the second focused on Juri, that gives it a strong and moody look. The layout is straightforward and functional with no problems in moving about as either the main menu or as a pop-up menu during regular playback. The layout is easy and I like the look of it with the color design and the visuals that were chosen with their detail and colors.

Extras:
The only extras included are the clean versions of the opening and closing sequences and some of the original promos for the Japanese broadcast.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Based on the manga by Seita Horio that ran from 2008 to 2014 and completed in eight volumes, Kokkoku: Moment by Moment is a surprising animated project. While we see shows made for older properties that had incomplete anime adaptations before it’s rarer to get a complete manga property getting the green light for a first-time adaptation as it doesn’t feel like there’s a monetary incentive to do so, such as increasing book sales. That said, I do enjoy them because most of the time the original project has ended completely and that allows the adaptation to capture the full breadth of the story by knowing the end game from the start so that it can feel complete, something far too many shows will never feel.

The show focuses on Juri, a recent college graduate that’s looking for work and hitting the interview circuit. That alone gets attention simply because it’s so rare and watching parts of the process is definitely fun. Well, for us at least as Juri is struggling with all of it and it’s wearing her out. She’s dealing with that because she wants to get on with her life as there’s a complicated home life that feels like she and her mother are the only ones supporting and working. Juri’s the responsible type so she’s doing her best but also shaming her father and brother a bit for their slovenly lifestyle and for not helping out. The setup works well to establish things before it goes wonky when Tsubasa heads off to pick up his nephew Makoto from school and both of them end up kidnapped in a black van. With a five million yen ransom, Juri gets a whole new level of stress in her life.

The chaos of the call has Juri and her father at odds but it’s her grandfather that sets things in motion, revealing a supernatural element that lets Juri tap into something amazing, essentially what looks like being able to step in between time or pause time. The science of it is pushed aside in an amusing way as the grandfather basically talks of how it’s been passed down in the family and it’s going to help them save Makoto and Tsubasa. He also talks of how stealing while here can cause this version of the world to devour you and that it’s best not to be tempted by such things. The problem arises during the moment of saving the others that Juri is aware of something else that exists in this pace, which her grandfather is as well but doesn’t want to deal with just yet. But what makes everything tense is the arrival of another group of people in this paused space with their own agenda, causing everything to become tense as they’re almost caught/killed.

The nature of this series is an interesting one as I’ve always loved the whole being able to stop time and step between things. There’s a lot of appeal in the way the whole invisibility as a super-power thing is one. Here, however, we get the mystery of the cult that’s kidnapping people and how Juri and her father and grandfather work together to deal with them. It has a good sense of danger about it as it moves forward as other people appear that can move in Stasis like Juri and the others and that definitely makes it exciting. The surprise reveal of people moving in the same stopped time moment has a classic horror thrill to it that appeals. But we also get some good action elements out of the show with Juri able to expel the Specters out of people, which in some more “complicated” moments is almost comically done but still well-executed. The thing that works is that none of them really feel like they’re “action” people but rather regular people who get caught up in things and act as you’d imagine they would. The Specters present enough of a threat and I like the visuals of them being expelled so it all works out nicely.

Honestly, Kokkoku, as it progresses really, reminded me of a lot of the mid-tier work that Bandai Entertainment brought out in the early 2000s. Titles I can’t quite remember fully but have these hazy memories of because they were interesting mystery series with odd hooks to them that drew you into the storyline. They weren’t visually compelling but prioritized the story and the exploration of unusual ideas over the flash and style. Kokkoku doesn’t quite have the depth that I think works, partially because the story takes a few odd turns along the way and is a slow build. But shows like this are important in that they provide material for an audience that doesn’t get served as often as it should. Juri’s tale as she deals with everything is intriguing but damn if the last five minutes didn’t leave me wanting to see a whole other series based on what’s teased there.

In Summary:
Kokkoku flew under the radar as it was an Amazon exclusive during its simulcast and was a welcome pickup by Sentai Filmworks so that it got more exposure. The show is one that has an interesting setup and an interesting finale but struggled in the middle to feel cohesive with what it was doing as it moved in and out of story elements with more characters appealing. Sentai’s release is solid with a good dub that lets the cast play roles they don’t often get to do with a good encoding and a solid package that really catches your eye. It may not work terribly well for me as a whole, making me wish I didn’t binge it, but it’s great to have this out for fans to own.

Viz Media Sets ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ Digital Manga Sale

Viz Media is digging into a very fun property for their next digital manga sale with the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise. While I do tend to recommend the print editions for this one as they’re gorgeous hardcover releases, for those that just want the ease and lower price of it all, the digital side is great for portability. The sale brings the volumes down to about $8 per volume with the Phantom BloodBattle Tendency, and Stardust Crusaders arcs all on sale.

The sale ends on May 6th, 2019.

Plot Concept: Young Jonathan Joestar’s life is forever changed when he meets his new adopted brother, Dio. For some reason, Dio has a smoldering grudge against him and derives pleasure from seeing him suffer. But every man has his limits, as Dio finds out. This is the beginning of a long and hateful relationship!

Elvira: Mistress Of The Dark #5 Review

Elvira’s journey into the inferno!

Creative Staff:
Story: David Avallone
Art: Dave Acosta
Colors: Ellie Wright
Letterer: Taylor Esposito

What They Say:
Elvira’s temporal adventures land her in hot water – so hot — one more time, and it may be the last. Her new nemesis sends her to the worst place in the universe, and we’re not talking about Encino! See it all go to Hell in the fifth exciting chapter of ELVIRA: TIMESCREAM!

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
A lot of books that I’ve been reading have been hitting gaps lately which have proven frustrating for remembering where you left off. Over four months between issues doesn’t help the narrative but thankfully David Avallone is working with a property that has the big picture but works almost episodic adventures so you can reconnect quickly as it shifts gears. Dave Acosta continues to be a wonderful artist for this book as I love the way he captures Elvira’s expressions, especially her eyes, but also for his fun interpretation of so many other characters that we come across as we get into Dante’s Inferno and parts of Elvira’s life surface in unexpected ways.

The arrival aspect with the good Doctor is amusing from the start as they’re in a house in the midst of all the fire and fury with Helen of Troy. Not that she uses the “of Troy” aspect for obvious reasons but she’s a hoot as she fixes a killer martini and then gets into some pretty serious arguments with the doc until he invokes Mephistoles. That’s what puts Elvira’s journey into motion as even he can’t help her out of this situation and sends her down into the deeper pits to find Lucifer. I do like that they play up the aspect of her here in that even with all that she’s seeing and where she is, she’s living up to the Mistress of the Dark moniker and not falling apart. She’s holding her own with plenty of quips to cover aspects of it while keeping her focus on getting out of this place.

The journey down further certainly has its own merits even if you’re like me and have read way too many Dante’s Inferno journies in comics form over the years. Her time with Edgar Allen Poe is delightful as well as getting across the river and picking up Vlad along the way. Vlad himself is a delight because he’s just intent on using her to get to Lucifer himself so he can get the position he believes he’s earned here, which is the kind of hubris that could go either way when you get down to it. The book moves us through a lot of stuff and with a few fun quips towards both publisher and reader, it’s standard excellent Elvira as we see her managing the situations that go beyond what people should deal with.

In Summary:
This Elvira series is a lot of fun with what it does in giving us a good road trip book into some bad places for our title character. David Avallone completely mastered the tone of the book and voice of the character from almost the first page so it’s just smooth and delightful here as it feels incredibly authentic. Dave Acosta has been one of the stronger artists in Dynamite’s stable over the years and is incredibly well-paired with this title as he brings Elvira to life wonderfully while also working some really grin-inducing material for others like Poe, Vlad, and more. I can’t wait to see where this goes next.

Disney+ Developing ‘Willow’ Project

With the usual caveat of development doesn’t mean given a green light, Disney is looking at another property it owns through LucasFilm for development with Willow. The original film landed in 1988 and came from George Lucas and Ron Howard, creating a good little cult following over the years. The original project worked with Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, and Joanne Whalley and did $57 million at the time on its $35 million budget.

Now, a series reboot is being explored where Ron Howard talked about it on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where he said:

“I think it’d be a great way to go,” Howard said. “In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

Deadline reported that there are conversations about trying to put something together and that Howard was talking about how it should focus on a more mature, older, and wiser Willow.

Original Concept: Journey to the far corners of your imagination with Willow! A timeless fantasy tale in which heroes comes in all sizes…and adventure is the greatest magic of all. When young Willow Ufgood finds an abandoned baby girl, he learns she is destined to end the reign of the wicked Queen Bavmorda. In order to protect the child, Willow must team up with a rogue swordsman and overcome the forces of darkness in the ultimate battle of good versus evil!

Obey Me #2 Review

A complicated but fun battle.

Creative Staff:
Story: Mario Mentasti
Art: Ben Herrera
Colors: Emanuel Ordaz Torres
Letterer: Justin Birch

What They Say:
During a routine clean-up mission of the city slums, Vanessa and Monty are suddenly targeted by a group of human mercenaries serving one of the Infernal Archdukes. Under pressure, they accidentally stumble upon a new power, but disagreements caused tempers to flare up and they split apart. Will they be able to restore their partnership and finish the job or will their division mark the end of their adventures and even their lives?

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The Obey Me series set its ground rules fairly quickly with what it’s operating under as part of the larger multimedia umbrella and that’s made it enjoyable. Mario Mentasti is having fun with these characters and just watching what Vanessa and Monty get up to is a delight even if there doesn’t feel like there’s a lot of weight to it in terms of big story ideas. It’s also fun as Ben Herrera delivers some great artwork once again as it’s very dynamic and filled with a great energy but we also get an entire issue set at night with a lot of dark colors, which fits but it also keeps things from really feeling like we can see everything clear enough sometimes.

Monty and Vanessa are working their latest mission which has them getting on each other’s nerves a bit since their opponent has an astral weapon and is holding his own against them better than expected. The two have been working together for only a little bit overall so it’s no surprise there’s a good bit of tension running between them, that can expand and break out into something more. Seeing the two of them actually go their separate ways to finish the mission isn’t a surprise. Having it happen after events cause them to combine form into a hellfire version of Vanessa? That was a surprise since there are so many questions to have. But both come across as petty and split to finish the mission on their own.

The problem is that the group hired to protect the guy they’re after are actually a group of human mercenaries with a wider array of astral weapons at their disposal. The connections to their own boss are easily ignored since the immediate mission is what has to be dealt with so it’s a delight in watching the two reconnect and figure out a good game plan for going after the mercs. Monty is a delight in how he provokes them while Vanessa’s action elements are solid. I quite like how she comes across once again because there’s so much drive and energy to the fighting side which comes across beautifully. But it’s complemented with how Monty acts and then the support he provides to deal with the sniper from afar that caused enough problems already in this book.

In Summary:
Obey Me continues to feel light in general with what it’s doing but that works fine. Again, I’m not playing or knowing much about the game that it’s tied to but what I like is that the book works on its own easily enough. The action is what dominates and there isn’t any real sense of a bigger overall storyline at work, though I expect something to click by the end of it. But until then we’re getting something that quenches a particular thirst with its action and choreography along with some characters that quip and argue their way along. It’s fun and enjoyable and a bit forgettable but it’s a delightful romp.

Akagi

The original Akagi manga saw an anime series out previously in 2005 that ran for two cour that saw Crunchyroll distribution for awhile, giving people some exposure to the property. It comes from the manga of the same name by Noboyuki Fukumoto that began in 1995 and wrapped up in early 2018. Now, it looks like there’s at least one chapter if not more coming for a sequel property as a “Chapter 0” of Yami Ma no Mamiya from the original creator in next month’s Kindai Mahjong magazine. The new story is set to take place twenty years after a key event within the larger original work for the main character.

Plot concept: Tokyo, 1958.

Nangou is playing a life and death match of mahjong against the Ryuzaki yakuza clan. If he loses, he must pay his debt through his own life insurance. He is despairing when suddenly a mysterious, 13-year old boy appears. His name is Akagi. Nangou senses a strong aura around the boy and out of desperation, he lets Akagi play for him.
Although Akagi has just learned the rules of mahjong, his natural talents are awakened and he defeats the veteran yakuza players. But this legendary night is only the beginning for Akagi, the genius who descended into the darkness…

Her long-time friend Nonomura Manana, who’s trying to quit being an otaku; the flawless Hosokawa Yuki, who occupies the top caste in the school; and lots of nameless people about town find themselves in Chio’s path as she employs the (useless) techniques she’s acquired from her Western video games in her daily efforts to get to school in one piece.
