Twelfth ‘Bonobono’ Anime DVD/BD Release Artwork Arrives

Bono Bono VisualThe spring 2016 anime series Bonobono continues on and has had its home video release material set where the short-form series is certainly getting a decent roll out. The twelfth volume was now been scheduled for a July 2nd, 2019 release and we now have a look at the cover design for both formats. The release is one where it’s not surprising that it’ll get separate DVD and Blu-ray editions in both regular edition form – though this edition the priced dropped by 1,300 yen for each format compared to most of the run prior to the tenth volume:

  • BD: 3,500 yen
  • DVD: 2,500 yen

The property had an anime adaptation back in the mid 90′s where it worked a fifteen-minute run time to tell its humor. The original manga from Mikio Igarashi has been in publication since 1986 and as part of its thirtieth anniversary will be getting this new adaptation. With forty volumes worth of material out there, there’s more than enough to work with.

The show was directed by Hidenori Yamaguchi based on the series composition by Mitsuka Hirota. The series was animated by studio Eiken and the Japanese cast includes Fukuko Yukimiyama as Bono Bono, Aya Ogata as Chipmunk, Shinpei Takano as Raccoon and Yūki Kurofuji as Fishing Cat.

The rock band Monobright performed the opening theme song for the series which is called “bonobono Suru, aka Do the bonobono.”

Plot concept: A sea otter and his friends, a raccoon, and squirrel, live and play together in the forest.

Kizuna: Much Ado About Nothing Anime DVD Review

$
0
0

After a spat caused by misunderstandings, we get to see how the relationship between Ranmaru and Kei evolved since their first meeting.

What They Say
Ranmaru is a promising Kendo champion. Kei is from a mafioso family. Doubts and mistrust are creeping into their already shaky relationship. Phone calls from mysterious women, and love hotel trysts among the cherry blossoms will not help their stability. Perhaps the only thing that can save these men are the memories of when they first met.

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this release brings us the original Japanese language track that’s in stereo and encoded at 224kbps. With this release just having the Japanese language track, it’s a pretty basic stereo mix that doesn’t really have all that much activity to it and is fairly full sounding in general with the bulk of the dialogue being placed through the center channel. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally released in 2001, the transfer for this OVA episode is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. Being a recent release at the time, the materials here are very clean and clear and this is essentially a flawless looking transfer. The shows colors are a fair bit muted as the show is done in a real world style so there isn’t a lot of vibrant moments but when there are they stand out nicely here and without problem. The transfer avoids pretty much all of the usual problems and is simply quite good looking and easy to watch.

Packaging:
Providing a decent looking if somewhat bland piece of artwork, the front cover has a shot of the duo standing next to each other with Kei wrapping his arms around Ranmanu. The simple shot does show off their personalities well enough though by look and style and it does give enough hint as to what the content inside may be without making it over the top blatant or obvious. The back cover goes with a simple approach with some basic artwork and a simple summary to cover the basics as well as a summary of the premise. The discs production and technical information covers the bottom part and is accurate, though I still think the show should at most be 17 rated instead of 18 since there’s no actual nudity in it.

Menu:
The main menu is a simple piece since there’s nothing here beyond the show and trailers and not even any language setup. The central image is of the two in their dojo outfits leaning into each other and kissing set against a white backdrop as the navigation selections are lined around them. It does have some surprising transitional animations as the scenes fade in and out between menus. It’s all done with small simple objects related to the characters but it’s a nice touch for a show that would ordinarily not even get such transitions. Access times are nice and fast and the player preset issue isn’t an issue with a release like this.

Extras:
None.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Our first encounter with Kizuna came quite some time ago when a company who had no idea what anime probably even was released it onto DVD as a port of their VHS release of it. Between their lackluster translation, presentation and overall release it was a pretty souring experience. So now the next entry in the series finally arrives, some seven years after the start of the OVA series, and it does itself a good job as serving as a recap and reboot point for the next generation of fans of the material.

Kizuna centers on the relationship between two men, Kei who is the son of a Mafioso family but has abandoned as much of it as possible, and Ranmaru, someone who at one time had a bright future as a Kendo master but lost it along the way. The two of them live together and as we can see from the first few minutes, their relationship is still somewhat undefined by conventional standards. The two are very close by all appearances and there is something more but events later on give way that it’s not a relationship that’s been fully up front or consummated yet. That doesn’t mean jealousies don’t enter into this though as we find Ranmaru dealing with Kei coming home drunk from his time as a worker in a club but this time with the scent and signs of being with women, something he can’t compete with. This sends him into despair and he heads out of the house and tries to get his thoughts in order.

What he does, probably subconsciously to a large extent, is walk around to places that mean something from his past. This allows us to see how their relationship grew in flashback sequences, such as their first meeting on campus in high school to their first kiss as kendo students. This isn’t an original way of showcasing a past relationship but it’s nicely paralleled with events in current time as Kei wakens from his drunken stupor and realizes what Ranmaru might have thought when he saw Kei with the lipstick and all and he tries to go to all the places where Ranmaru might be so he can reassure him. It’s a fairly standard story both in the past and present and the genders really don’t enter it at all outside of one incident in their past that made Ranmaru question whether they should even continue but that’s it.

With this being an OVA, the animation for it is rather well done and has a lot of the elements and feel of some of the shinier looking adult releases with its smooth designs and colors layouts. The show in general has a very polished feel with lots of detail to the characters and their backgrounds and settings. As attractive as it looks in general, this is still very much a dialogue driven piece with the characters going through their reminiscing and talking things out to themselves or those that wander into their life during this time.

In Summary:
In a way, the plus of the show is also a minus of the show and that’s that the story itself would be essentially the same even if it was mixed gender. It’s good to see that the stories are essentially the same and that you can experience a good male/male relationship without it being something flamboyant or over the top, but at the same time we’ve seen the story a million times before with mixed gender couples. But these are the kinds of first steps that are out there to help push the genre forward and will hopefully allow for more varied and more interesting stories as time goes on that focuses more on the things that are relevant to couples like this, at least in addition to the standard relationship problems. In the end though, the title of this particular OVA really covers it all; it’s much ado about nothing.

The official site has brought out the news of when to expect the series as it’ll be a part of the Fall 2019 season in October. It’s being directed by Takahiro Omori based on the series composition by Sadayuki Murai. Geno Studio is handling the animation for the production. The show is getting broadcast in Japan with its streaming handled by Amazon Prime Video both in Japan and worldwide.

Assuming Lina to be a damsel in distress, the foolish yet magnanimous man confronts the brigands in order to rescue her. After defeating them posthaste, the oblivious cavalier decides to escort Lina to Atlas City. Though not very keen on this idea, she ends up accepting his offer.

However, without realizing it, Lina has chanced upon a mighty magical item among her most recent spoils. The Weekly Movies Discussion Post For May 5th, 2019

With a lot of TV shows wrapping up soon I’m getting excited to start working on some movies in my backlog and get caught up there. Enough so that I put a bunch of them in their own playlist so I won’t forget. In the meantime, I did manage to work through a trio of movies this week that were pretty varied as well as taking in Aquaman with the kids – their first time seeing it as the Christmas season was too chaotic.

The big one for me was the Justice League Vs the Fatal Five. The film is included as part of a DC Universe streaming subscription so compared to spending $20 to buy it, I got to check it out as part of the service. This was a fun film overall but was extras special for me since I’m a huge Legion of Superheroes fan. That group is what got me to really try out DC Comics back in the early ’80s just after the Great Darkness War and it introduced me to the Five Years Later arc that really was one of the pinnacles of storytelling for me.

This film deals with one of the Legion from the 31st century traveling back in time to stop some members of the Fatal Five from impacting the 21st century. Star Boy isn’t the Star Boy I’m used to from the days of old but he plays well with being lost and confused and eventually getting help from the League. What works much better is the focus on the Green Lantern of the film, Jessica Cruz. I only know of her from the DC Super Hero Girls series so this gave me a better idea of her background and story as she struggles with anxiety and depression related to a near-death experience before and the loss of friends. It’s a surprisingly blunt film about the issues but it made her incredibly accessible and her arc was very enjoyable to watch as she becomes protective of Star Boy while dealing with the growing threat. The biggest plus for me was in my favorite villainess, The Emerald Empress, getting some great time in the third arc to really go all-out in the villain department. I loved the designs, the cast was great, and I really recommend it highly for a great time.

Another new film that I took in on the streaming side was the recently released Someone Great on Netflix. As I’ve talked about before, I’m a sucker for romantic comedies whether they’re just straight comedies or something that deals with more serious aspects to the relationship. This one has an enjoyable cast that are playing characters in their late twenties/early thirties with Gina RodriguezBrittany Snow, and DeWanda Wise. It’s centered around Rodriguez’s character as her lengthy relationship breaks up with Nate at the same time she gets a dream job on the other side of the country. The film works flashbacks throughout to various aspects of their relationship with all the good and bad times all while her friends do their best to distract her while working towards tickets for a big concert series that night so they can go out in style. It is, like the majority of these films, pretty predictable. Clocking in at 90-minutes, it doesn’t waste a lot of time and keeps things moving forward even while looking back in good ways. I liked all of the actors involved as they dealt with their own issues along the way, and long-simmering issues with each other as well, but Rodriguez carries it as the lead really well and made you feel the relationship she was in and all the weight of it falling apart.

I’ll preface The Silence by saying I have not seen A Quiet Place yet. There are controversies over this film from its derivativeness, lack of real look at what would really happen, and casting a non-deaf actress as a deaf character and some things said during publicity about it. A lot of that is easy to shuffle off to the side and just take in the film itself. It isn’t great, there’s no doubt there, but it’s a lean and fairly enjoyable 90-minute sprint of mild terror/horror. The central premise is that a cave research team has unlocked a previously unknown species called “vesps” into the world. They’re like bigger and thicker vampire bats with xenomorph style heads that are blind and focused on sound. So, once out in the real world along the east coast of the US, they start attacking and devouring anything that makes noise. They’re ugly little buggers and you can see why in a large flock they’d be a huge threat. They also breed real fast so they’re able to replenish quickly, making them harder to dislodge. But you also see people not coming up with smart and obvious solutions to dealing with them.

The main focus is on a family that realizes quickly that the best thing to do is to get out of the city and somewhere off the grid where they can hole up and be quiet while waiting to see how it unfolds. A series of tragedies ensue with family members dying, others coming into the mix, and lots of Vesps screeching angrily between bites. I’m of two minds about the bit in the third arc with the cult that forms up about this being an end-times thing and how the “reverend” draws people to it quickly – and cuts their tongues out as part of the initiation. The societal breakdown is one thing, happening on day two? Maybe a little too quickly, guys. At the same time, have you seen society lately?

I admit that the reason I watched it is the cast. Or, more specifically, Kiernan Shipka. I liked her when she was on Mad Men and she’s been a blast in The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, so I was curious to see more of her outside of those settings. She’s not bad in it and handles the narration well and the signing while doing plenty of visual emoting. But I also have a soft spot for Stanley Tucci as he seems to take on most any role given to him. He’s solid enough here that it’s just enjoyable to watch him. I also liked seeing Miranda Otto in this since she works with Shipka in Sabrina but my enjoyment of her goes back to Eowyn in Lord of the Rings. Plus, it has John Corbett and that tickles my Northern Exposure side perfectly.

New pickups this past week were slim with only The Girl in the Spider’s Web making the list. A few things were on sale but with the backlist that I have I mostly look at how often they go on sale to determine whether to grab it now. I enjoyed the first film and am curious to see how Claire Foy does in the role after Rooney Mara previously.

His girlfriend leaves him, he nearly dies in a traffic accident, and debt collectors come after him.

A cat-and-mouse chase begins, and Yan’s Finance president Yan takes his subordinates Aro and Gra along for the ride. Robby manages to elude Hatchi and escape to space while shaking off Yan’s group. Robby thinks of escaping to Isekandar, a distant and legendary planet in the Milky Way that is said to bring happiness to those who go there. The Weekly TV Discussion Post For May 5th, 2019

via FX

With a lot of shows wrapping up soon for the season, I’m looking forward to having a mildly lighter TV schedule. The flip side is that the summer season has a few ongoings that I’m excited for and a lot of binge shows on the way so there’ll still be plenty to talk about.

I started Fosse/Verdon late as I wanted to have a couple of episodes in the recorder first so that I could watch more at once if I wanted to do. And boy did I. I never knew much about either of them and the film projects they were involved in where musicals that I hadn’t explored, but I like character studies like this. What drew me to this one in particular was that it’s a miniseries and that it has such a great cast to it. I don’t think we’ve had this much Michelle Williams TV material since her Dawson’s Creek days so I definitely enjoy watching her run the emotional gamut here and playing against Sam Rockwell as their relationship is just a big mess from start to finish. It’s a great period piece with a fantastic cast – including Aya Cash and Margaret Qualley – with wonderful dance scenes and looks at how various musicals and films were put together.

After initially watching part of the three-part reworking of the film, I started digging more into the 1978 Battlestar Galactica series. I still find a lot of a narrative mess and very much a ’70s SF show, but there are parts of it that were excised for the reboot that I wish could be incorporated into another reboot since there are other races and species out there. The “science” of it all is just hilariously wonky but there’s just an anything-goes kind of charm to it as they rework as many western TV sets as possible into various outpost worlds that they visit. Having not seen this since its original broadcast run, there’s an element of nostalgia in there to be sure and I was surprised by how much I remembered overall. And that I started finding some real appeal in the hairstyles and clothing of the time as I generally dislike a whole lot of ’70s era SF work because of these things. But Maren Jensen, Jane Seymour, and Anne Lockhart all “make it work” for me.

Netflix finally added some new New Girl to its streaming with season six! I’m still a sucker for this show and I liked this season with it being about the home repairs for Schmidt and Cece and to see more Winston and Cece messarounds as those were always awesome. And more time with some Pepperwood Chronicles? Hells yes please.

With a lot of my shows wrapping up in the next two weeks with the CW series such as Flash and Arrow and so forth along with a lot of regular sitcoms and the like, binge season is coming. And the summer season. On the binge side, this Wednesday has Lucifer making its fourth season Netflix premiere and I wants it badly. BADLY. Friday also sees the debut of the sixth season of Agents of SHIELD and I wish that was a show I could binge the hell out of too instead of waiting on it weekly like someone from the 20th century.
