The Dreaming #9 Review

Under new management.

Creative Staff:
Story: Simon Spurrier
Art: Bilquis Evely
Colors: Mat Lopes
Letterer: Simon Bowland

What They Say:
Chapter 9: “Entrances and Reflections.”
It seeks him here, it seeks him there,
The nightmare seeks him everywhere.
Is he in faerie, or among damned screams…?
That doomed, elusive Lord of Dreams…

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The Dreaming continues to be a book where I love some of the details, really enjoy the big picture, but get frustrated with some of the execution. Simon Spurrier is pouring a lot of interesting aspects into the book as we see the new masters of the Dreaming getting a handle on things and I really like that. Bilquis Evely returns to the art duties with this issue and it’s another hugely detailed piece that’s just striking with how much there is to it. But the frustration, surprisingly, comes from Simon Bowland. Bowland does a lot of great lettering jobs on a wide range of books but the varied styles here, in its digital form, are just incredibly frustrating and hard to read with some of them. With each creature seemingly having its own style, it just becomes more of a chore at times and I know I’m missing out on dialogue.

The new lord of the Dreaming is in a difficult place as we see from the start as there’s just so much going on in the realm. It’s attempting to repair things as it can but it’s not the easiest or most coherent place in the world so there are struggles as it attempts to learn how everything comes together. I really like how it describes itself here and that it’s hoping for some patience from everyone else. The problem is that Dora is quite insistent on getting Lucius back as they need him in order to help Daniel with what it’s going through and can help with the bigger picture. But he’s missing from seemingly every realm and that has Dora now working with Matthew to use a little something extra to try and figure out where he is. A fingernail from the previous Dream is a curious item to be sure and that the land of the faerie is where it takes them is surprising.

The bulk of the book takes place there and it’s fascinating to see it unfold – and amusing as Books of Magic is taking a detour through there as well. Here, we connect with former Dreaming resident Nuala as she describes how Dream came through here some time ago, made a complicated deal with Titania, and has been gone since. The tease we get of him trying to heal himself and meet with some of his siblings in order to restore himself is fascinating, though the nod that it may be a journey that takes an aeon is unnerving. The dealings between Dream and Titania are intriguing, especially knowing the rules of this realm, as is getting more of their past. But seeing how confused and uncertain he is and making deals in this state is definitely concerning. We get a solid setup for moving onto the next realm, which is delivered with a great end-page here, but there’s just a lot of setup going on with some of the characters and their futures just from what we learn from Nuala and Titania.

In Summary:
The Dreaming answers a few questions but mostly by asking a whole host of new questions. While I enjoyed the look back at Dream we had recently with what he went through in the past, this issue feels like more of a return to form – both for Spurrier and in getting Evely back on the artwork. The main storyline feels like it’s moving forward and I’m hoping or more time with Daniel in the Dreaming as I really liked his time with Abel. Dora and what she may be is intriguing as well and I adore the way Evely brings her to life, as well as Matthew. It’s a solid installment that gives a good sense of what’s to come and has me craving more.

We learned back in February at the Television Critics Association event that the upcoming third season of Legion on FX would be the last one – and that was part of the initial plan from creator Noah Hawley. The third season is set for a June 24th, 2019 debut and we’ve got a fantastic piece now released with a look at the main poster for the season that really captures exactly what David is. This series has been one of the strongest visual design series of the decade and it provides so much context within the story itself.

Suffice to say, we really recommend it.

The series stars Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza, Rachel Keller, Bill Irwin, Jean Smart, and Jemaine Clement.

Plot Concept: David Haller, a troubled young man who is diagnosed as schizophrenic, but after a strange encounter, he discovers special powers that will change his life and the worlds forever.

When the Legends let time crumble to release and defeat Mallus, the barrier between worlds softened. History is now infected with “Fugitives” – magical creatures from myths and fairy tales. Having been expelled throughout time by people like Constantine, they are now returning to the real world in droves and making a mess of things.

‘Dreadstar’ Omnibus Kickstarter, Fully Funded In 12 Hours, Ends In A Week

Being a comic fan in the ’80s was kind of a trippy time as there was the whole comic store explosion going on and if you went from the newsstand to that, it was like a whole new world was opening up for you. I had limited experience with Jim Starlin’s works at that point firsthand but I knew of his work on Thanos and Captain Marvel and the impact it made on the Marvel books I was enjoying. So when I discovered that he had another series called Dreadstar and it was a standalone piece on the independent side, I was all in.

The series has held up quite well over the years and we’ve reported on some comic revival moments and a TV series development phase. Now, a new series of omnibus works are being put together through Kickstarter with some great talent involved in all of it and some fantastic stretch goals. The first omnibus was funded in just twelve hours, which was especially great as the go-live goal was just $24,000, making it a very accessible number that almost guaranteed it would get funded. Check out the details for it and take a risk, even in digital form, for a really great series that you may have heard of but never experienced as there’s just a week left in the run!

Getting strong support and setup from the Elseworlds crossover that we saw on The CW last fall, the Batwoman series has been put to series order from The CW for the next season. We’ve got Ruby Rose coming back for it after her turn in the crossover and the full known cast based on the pilot includes”

  • Ruby Rose as Kate Kane / Batwoman
  • Meagan Tandy as Sophie Moore
  • Camrus Johnson as Luke Fox
  • Nicole Kang as Mary Hamilton
  • Rachel Skarsten as Alice
  • Dougray Scott as Jacob Kane
  • Elizabeth Anweis as Catherine Hamilton-Kane

The pilot was written by Caroline Dries and was directed by Marcos Siegal.

Plot Concept: The show centers on Kate Kane (Rose) who soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

A string of paranormal, unsolved murders leads the vampire hunter Vampirella and her sword-wielding barbarian partner Red Sonja to the small, sleepy town where things always seem to happen… There they discover Betty and Veronica, investigative reporters for the high school newspaper, also hot on the trail of the same killer

Crossovers are always fun when you get some odd properties together. Dynamite Entertainment has done a good bit of that over the years and come across as basically open to most anything if it can make sense. This series brings together two familiar Dynamite characters with the two leading ladies of Archie Comics under the writing of Amy Chu, who was recently working on both Red Sonja and Dejah Thoris for Dynamite. She’s paired up with the always excellent Maria Sanapo who has turned in so much great work that I’ve enjoyed over the years that I wish I was seeing their stuff every month. Bringing them together with the characters at play is basically giving me all of my favorite things in one place.

The premise is simple in that something dangerous is walking the streets of Riverdale as the Chaos Cult has come to town. Within the first issue, they have a couple of killings at Riverdale High already and that’s setting up for some real tension for this little town. The book looks like it pretty much sits apart from the current ongoing and the Archie Horror imprint to be its own thing and it doesn’t do much to actually introduce you to any of the characters, which is both good and bad. They’ve all been around for what feels like forever so that you can understand that as there are plenty of resources. What Amy Chu does do is treat them all perfectly and gives us a sense that both Sonja and Vampirella know each other from what I presume to be their Sword of Sorrows crossover from before. Taking a lot of the meet and greet out of the book helps move things along well.

Essentially, the pair have come to Riverdale to figure out what’s going on and discovers that the Chaos Cult is here and begin forming a plan, which is exactly when Betty and Veronica arrive in the morgue as they’re tracking down details on the death of their teacher. The grouping comes together quickly since the high school students can help the seasons warriors blend in and there’s a natural affinity between the two. The book is delightful as it takes them to Veronica’s to find proper clothes, watching Sonja get frustrated by the school day itself and Archie, and just to see how the dynamic between them all plays out while looking for clues as to what’s going to come next from the Chaos Cult. The best, however, is Sonja discovering football and what will be her tribe as she utterly excels at the game.

In Summary:
While I expect a fairly straightforward story overall with a couple of twists along the way, the real draw here is having the four characters together within the world of Riverdale. The opening installment delights as everyone feels well-realized from the start and the minor introductions we get are all that are really needed so that it can move forward and just have fun with everything. Amy Chu captures the tone and voice of each character well while Maria Sanapo has some great work here, which was a given based on my past experience with her Bombshells work. I can’t wait to see more of what’s in store with this series and I’m stupidly hoping for some additional fashion montage pieces in order to delight the readers.

A deeper look at this world.

What They Say:
In the world of guns and steel that is Gun Gale Online, LLENN has been a devoted, female solo player. She is obsessed with two things: donning herself entirely in pink and honing her skills with consistent gameplay. She soon discovers her love for hunting other players (a.k.a. PK or Player Killing), and quickly becomes known as the “Pink Devil.”

Meanwhile, LLENN meets a beautiful yet mysterious player, Pitohui, and the two click right away. Doing as she is told by Pitohui, she enters the Squad Jam group battle.

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation here is one that has both language tracks and it’s definitely a big step up over how the first season was presented. The original Japanese language track is done in the uncompressed PCM format so we get the stereo mix in a very strong and clear manner here that sounds great and definitely conveys some solid warmth and overall forward soundstage directionality and depth. The English mix is now thankfully done in the same way rather than using the lossy DVD level Dolby Digital codec. Getting the English mix uncompressed helps to bring that out in a better way with more clarity and overall warmth to it. The mix does the same work as the Japanese mix and the dub is solid itself and both tracks come across clean and clear and we didn’t have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally airing in 2018, the transfer for this series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p using the AVC codec. The six episodes for this set are spread evenly across two discs. Animated by 3Hz, the show has a really great look about it that feels very much in line with what the other series have produced. Colors are rich throughout with a solid and deep palette that’s used whether it’s the dark night scenes or interiors as well as the brighter exteriors of the battle zone. The detail is well handled with crisp lines where appropriate and no problems such as line noise or breakup along it. The transfer here captures the source material in a way where there’s nothing to really find fault with during regular playback and it just allowed me to be sucked into this fully realized world in an engaging way.

Packaging:
The packaging for this release is done up the same as the previous sets with the limited edition form that really hits well as it has a certain simple sleek classiness about it. The thin slipcase is done up in a flat white look that has on the back panel has the GGO logo design in silver that looks good. The front panel goes for a look at the two main characters here with LLENN and Pito that’s dynamic and fun, especially with the mix of pink and black against the white. The case artwork goes and changes it up a bit with the GGO logo element spread across front and back but done with a black/grey background and some light pink to mix it up some. This is also done up for the reverse side of the case which is a nice bit of continuity. The set also comes with a couple of high-quality postcards and a great full-color booklet that breaks down characters and weapons with a lot of detail and appreciation that looks great and makes for a good reference.

Extras:
The extras for this release are pretty straightforward as we get the clean opening and closing sequences as well as an audio commentary track. The big inclusion is the 5.5 bonus episode as it provides a recap of the first five that gave the animation team a bit of time to catch up and handle the workload. It’s admittedly not what you want to see with a twelve-episode series but I’m definitely glad of its inclusion as I can see rewatching it when the second half comes out to recap everything.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With the success of the main Sword Art Online series, with its sequels, specials, and theatrical film, it’s no surprise that the spinoff material from the light novel side was going to get an adaptation. Gun Gale Online tackles the world we saw within the main series but comes from the novels written by someone else, namely Keiichi Sigsawa. Those were done with illustrations by Kouhaku Kuroboshi and began in late 2014 where there are as of this writing about eight volumes out – plus a few manga adapted volumes. They’ve done well in sales for the light novels and bolstering them with a one-cour anime adaptation is an easy thing to do because people liked seeing the Gun Gale Online world within the Sword Art Online series and how Kirito had to challenge himself in order to really handle it.

This series revolves around the in-game character of LLENN, who is Karen Kohiruimaki. I like her from the start since she’s a college student and not younger and she has a bit of a complex about her height as she’s pretty tall in a place where most women are much shorter. That seems to be compensated for in the game where as LLENN she’s a tiny spitfire dressed in all pink, down to the hat, and takes out a lot of her frustrations with her gun. LLENN is paired up with M, a brick type of character that’s definitely pretty skilled and experienced as we see from the introduction. The series works a backwards approach with the opening episode showing us a Squad Jam event underway with teams going up against each other and the two of them working their strategy pretty well. But the show backs up in the second episode to show her getting into this world, how she ended up with M, and some of those first games together as they got a handle on how they operate together.

The first five episodes cover the main match that we get in the first and while it may be a touch drawn out it does fill it in with a lot of background and aspects along the way. We see how Karen ends up seeking refuge in the VR game because of the anxieties she has and then delights when her character comes up short and cute. Seeing her early attempts at mastering the game are fun, especially since she gets quite the reputation as the Pink Devil, especially because it’s kind of surreal that she can hide so well in something so bright and colorful. You can see the joy she gets in the game and just how comfortable she feels in this virtual skin and the mix of character exploration and showing off the world through her eyes makes for an enjoyable time.

What also helps is that her first real friend that she makes there is another woman named Pitohui. The two pair up for a while as she basically takes LLENN under her wing but it’s more so that they can fight against each other someday as there’s some real admiration of skill between the two. The dynamic between the two women is great since there’s no competing male attentions or anything relating to that either so it’s just about the game and their focus. What we do get is Pito working to pair LLENN up with someone that will be ideal for training and growth, which leads her to M. He’s an interesting character because he’s not the silent but deadly brick type but one that converses fairly well and has an engaging personality even if he is a bit on the more introverted side. They’re not the usual conventional pairing that you get with these things, both outgoing or at least one of them overly so, and it makes them fun to watch since they have to employ strategy in taking down other teams.

In Summary:
The first half of this season is fun. It’s not angst-filled or working some sort of overly large problem that will end the world. It’s people playing a game where most of it is in-game material but with a healthy dose outside of the game so that we understand who they are as actual people. There doesn’t feel like there are any significant stakes and the slow unfolding of the main fight that we kick off with plays well as we get a good feel for everyone involved. It’s just a pleasant experience where you like the characters and their interactions and want to see more and you can enjoy it without forced drama or character friction. Aniplex’s set is solidly produced with a great looking and sounding disc in a decent package that will please fans who like the shiny aspects of it all. While the main series is where my love is, Gun Gale Online has the potential to add a little more love to my life. I’m excited to see where the rest of this season goes.
