First ‘D.Gray-man Hallow’ Anime DVD/BD Release Artwork Arrives

$

D.Gray-Man 2016The upcoming summer series D.Gray-Man Hallow is almost here and Aniplex Japan is looking to ensure that preorders are in early as they previously revealed the full release slate with dates and pricing for it. With a bit of time until the first volume arrives, they’ve now brought out the cover artwork for the first volume in preview form that we hope is carried through the series run. The thirteen episode cour will be getting a six volume release where the first disc has three episodes and the remainder have two. That means the first disc is priced at 7,200 yen for Blu-ray and 6,200 yen for DVD while the remainder are 6,500 yen and 5,500 yen respectively.

The new series was directed by Yoshiharu Ashino based on the scripts from Michiko Yokote, Tatsuto Higuchi and Kenichi Yamashita. Yosouke Kabashima served as the chief animation director and character designer with it all being animated at TMS Entertainment.

The Japanese cast includes Ayumu Murase as Allen Walker, Takuya Satou as Yuu Kanda, Natsuki Hanae as Lavi, Ai Kakuma as Lenalee Lee, Yutaka Aoyama as Earl Millenium, Masakazu Nishida as Tyki Mikk, Yui Kondou as Road Kamelot, Soichiro Hoshi as Wisely, Ryouta Asari as Alma Karma, Noriaki Sugiyama as Aleister Crowley III, Ami Koshimizu as Miranda Lotto, Houchuu Ootsuka as Bookman, Go Inoue as Komui Lee, Tomokazu Sugita as Reever Wenhamm, Mitsuhiro Ichiki as Johnny Gill, Tooru Ookawa as Malcolm C. Rouvelier, Takuya Eguchi as Madarao, Soma Saito as Tokusa and Rie Suegara as Tewaku.

With the original series back in 2006 that ran for 103 episodes, only the first half of it was licensed and released in North America by FUNimation. Which will make this interesting going forward if FUNimation tackles the simulcast and it is a sequel as to whether the option on the missing half will be exercised and if we’ll get a new re-release of what was previously brought out.

The series is based on the manga from Katsura Hoshino that began in 2004. It originally kicked off in Shounen Jump and then moved to Jump SQ back in 2009. It’s currently up to 24 volumes total, which Viz Media has released in North America in full.

Plot concept: Toward the end of the 19th century, Allen Walker officially joins the organization of Exorcists that destroys the beings known as Akuma—mechanic weapons made by the Millennium Earl with the suffering souls of the dead. Allen has both a cursed eye and an anti-Akuma weapon as an arm, bearing the power of “Innocence,” a gift given to him as an apostle of God. Allen, along with his fellow Exorcists, must put a stop to the Millennium Earl’s ultimate plot that could lead to the destruction of the world and all who live on it.

Re Zero VisualThe spring 2016 anime series Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- is getting its home video release handled by Media Factory and they’ve set the pace for what’s to come. Ahead of the release of the second volume later this month, they’ve now brought out a look at the packaging for the series and the cover artwork for it, which definitely has some good style about it. The twenty-five episode series is getting a nine-volume release that begins on June 24th, 2016. The Blu-ray releases are priced at 7,560 yen each while the DVDs are at 7,560 yen each.

Based on the light novels from writer Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrator Shinichirou Ootsuka, the series has seven volumes to its name so far and was announced as being a part of the spring season back in December 2015.

The series was directed by Seiji Watanabe working off of series composition by Masahiro Yokotani. Character designs were done by Kyuta Sakai with White Fox handling the animation production. The cast includes Yuusuke Kobayashi as Subaru Natsuki, Rie Takahashi as Emilia, Yumi Uchiyama as Pack, Chinatsu Akasaki as Felt, Rie Murakawa as Ram, Inori Minase as Rem, Satomi Arai as Beatrice and Yuuichi Nakamura as Lineheart.

Plot concept: Natsuki Subaru, an ordinary high school student, encounters a beautiful silver-haired girl from another world. Subaru wants to stay by her side and help her, but the burden she carries is far beyond anything Subaru imagined. They’re faced with one attacking monster after another, betrayal, irrational violence… and finally death. Subaru doesn’t want to see her get hurt, so he vows to take down any enemy, any fate that comes his way, to protect her. And so this powerless boy obtains “Return by Death,” a unique ability that allows him to turn back time by dying. It becomes the potential to guide all people to a world where everyone can always be smiling, dependent on Subaru’s life and loneliness. By using his power, the past can be lost, and memories can be rewritten. Subaru must now fight the fate that dooms him to keep all those forgotten memories hidden within, to be perpetually beaten, to see his own heart wearing down, to wager his life… all to protect the people he cares about. To get back the precious times that he’s sure must have happened.

“Even if you forget me, I will never forget you.”

Jonathan Clements Classic Anime Industry Interview Resurfaces

Jonathan ClementsNozomi Entertainment continues to plumb the depths of the old Anime Today podcast to bring interviews to life on YouTube and expand their reach with them. The latest one to be added is from February 2009 where they say down with Jonathan Clements, British author and scriptwriter who co-authored with Helen McCarthy on all 3 versions of The Anime Encyclopedia.

Clements has been around for quite some time with the way he’s dealt with anime and manga over the years and comes from the same generation as myself, so there’s a lot of similarities to be had there, though with an obvious UK bent to it as well. These older interviews provide some great insights into anime industry history at home and abroad and this one, clocking in at an hour, has a ton of really great tidbits to dig into.

One Piece Episode #750 Anime Review

One Piece Episode 750So close to the Monster of the New World and yet still so far.

What They Say:
“A Desperate Situation! Luffy Fights a Battle in Extreme Heat!”

Luffy, Desire, and Bartolomeo go up against Bill! But the mad, Smelt-Smelt man becomes deranged and lets his true power unfurl! Do Luffy and the others have any hope of exposing Bill’s self-serving aims and turning his gang against him?

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
One Piece has been having some generally light and silly fun wit hthis arc as it leads into the film out next weekend. It’s worked well enough for me but I also knew going into it exactly what it is and that kept me from wholly investing into it a lot. It’s the perfect kind of story arc to get things moving after the overly extended (but thoroughly fun) arc we just had with Dressrosa, giving us some time to blow off a little steam and just have something without any real meaning. Watching the previous seasons on DVD for review throughout all of this you know long time fans get how the structure of the show works and as we get closer to being caught up with the manga we’re hopeful for some fun anime original story arcs to expand on things and just enjoy itself a bit after dealing with a fairly serious arc overall.

With it being a short arc, things have moved quickly and we now have the core trio going up against Bill to deal with what he’s doing here. For Desire, it’s a harsh moment as Bill lays out how he’s basically taken advantage of her and most everyone else here by being useful idiots and little else in the end, which hits her deep and reinforces Luffy’s desire to set things right here. It’s a fairly fun battle throughout the first half as Luffy and Bill get into it and Luffy plays it well with his powering up and dealing with things in a straightforward way, which in turn reinforces Bartolomeo’s love of him. It’s the kind of fight that you’d expect in an arc like this because Luffy is largely holding back as he knows how to scale his level of power against varying opponents. He’s obviously not going as all out here as he did against Doflamingo, but it’s still engaging and fun because you never know what tricks may be up someone’s sleeve.

As a greater lead in to the film, Bill’s being beaten and tossed down a deep hole has him being told that if he can’t handle someone like Luffy that he’s going to be cast aside by the Monster of the New World, which gives us our brief shot of his past groveling in front of one of the characters from the film. That gets Bill to overpower himself and go all out against Luffy and friends with his lava ability and brutish strength. It’s a visually fun sequence overall and gives Desire and Barto some decent time together that even clears up a childhood misunderstanding that has haunted Desire. It all builds well enough in the action and scale for this small area and I’m a sucker for goofy lava based events anyway, so while it’s mostly fluff for me since I won’t be seeing the movie for an age, it’s enjoyable enough on a simple level.

In Summary:
The conclusion of the arc is about as expected and it has some fun action to it and some minor character bits that helps to smooth things out between Desire and Bartolomeo. There are some fun bits that we get throughout it, some nice action for Luffy to work with that’s properly scaled down, and just enough of a tease and nod toward what’s to come with the film. All in all, not a bad arc and better than some previous film lead-in arcs that we’ve had before as it can mostly stand alone.

One Piece takes next week off to let fans hit the theater to take in the movie.

‘Ghostbusters’ Arrives Along Expectations at Box Office

Ghostbusters 2016With little int he way of kids fare these days, The Secret Life of Pets scored big once again this weekend with a $50 million take that brings its domestic cume up to $203 million so far, making it another solid entry for Universal and Illumination on top of other recent kids fare doing well. The film will slow down a bit by the next weekend and then bring in some good numbers throughout weekdays, but it won’t catch up to the big winner of the summer with Finding Dory. That film added another $11 million this weekend to bring it to $445 million, a move that earns it the title of the highest grossing animated film domestically.

The debut of Ghostbusters arrived amid months and months of controversy about its approach and casting and netted a $46 million weekend, which is decent and pretty much what they expected. Now they just have to wait and see how the weekdays go based on friends and family word of mouth whether it’ll sink it or drive it up with more interest. Amusingly, the film is still the best opening weekend for director Paul Feig as well as actress Melissa McCarthy. The film did not open much overseas with just three main territories for a $19 million opening and has a staggered roll out over the next month.

The Legend of Tarzan is working the slow but steady approach as in its third weekend it hit $11 million to bring it over $100 million.

Not doing so well from last week is Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, which landed just $7.5 million to bring its domestic up to $31 million.

Next weekend has a couple of big things with Star Trek Beyond arriving in 3,500 screens while Ice Age: Collision Course will hit 3,800 screens, though we’re feeling iffy on that project with it being the fifth film in the franchise. It’s doing well in its early overseas arrival with $127 million, but there’s a sense that the property is a bit more played out domestically. Lights Out also arrives to try and score some PG-13 horror fans. We also get a very limited release of Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie in just 250 screens.

Cross Game Episode #04 Anime Review

Cross Game Epsiode 4Senda’s reputation changes a bit through the actions of Aoba and Ko’s quick thinking.

What They Say:
An unfriendly man comes to hit at the Tsukishima Batting Center. He hits homerun and homerun, and the other patrons are astonished. When a group of students come check out the high school, the homerun hitter is among them.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Cross Game takes a nice little diversion at the start of this episode as it has Ko and Aoba foiling a burglary when they see something amiss from the train. It’s a straightforward situation that you have a hard time believing kids would get involved in, but through the efforts of both they take down a knife-wielding burglar, though both of them disappear from the scene before they can be given credit for it. Senda’s there though and sees everything that happens, even has his life threatened by the burglar, and ends up taking the credit for what happened, though he’s still in shock about the whole thing. The moment is short overall, but it makes it clear what kind of people both Aoba and Ko are.

Life goes on though and the general flow of the series at this stage is still about building things when it comes to the team that’s envisioned. Ko’s continuing to do his batting practice on a regular basis, though it seems like he’s doing it more to get the prize socks than anything else. Aoba’s working hard at the family business where she gets to one-up Ko a bit by pointing out someone came in to practice and completely obliterated his record. He doesn’t seem to care too much though and instead sympathizes with the stranger over the fact that Aoba is quite the bratty girl, something that earns him yet another slap from Aoba. Between working there and working at the café portion itself, Aoba has a kind of personality that’s fun to watch at times but could be problematic in the long run. She’s a good kid but there’s a chip there that’s difficult to deal with on a regular basis.

Pieces of the past are brought into the show again as well as we see a little more of the fight that broke out with Nakanishi and the other players which resulted in him getting out of the team. Akaishi is trying to draw him back in since he sees so much talent in Ko and he knows that Nakanishi is a key part of that as well. Akaishi’s method of drawing in Ko is interesting as he plays the Wakaba angle pretty delicately by talking about the dreams she had for Ko and getting him to pitch for him, letting him show off exactly what he can do even though Ko doesn’t think he’s a great pitcher or anything. It’s a good motivation piece and one that Ko is up for, though I think he sees it as a pretty transparent thing. Akaishi is really turning into an intriguing character for me since he’s the strong silent type, but he knows when to break his silence and say the important things.

In Summary:
With the show having fifty episodes to work through, the pacing is spot on here as it is slowly building out the cast of characters and the way their relationships work, especially since several aren’t actively playing on the team (yet). The one that I’m enjoying the most is watching how Aoba and Ko get along since there’s that bit of tension there. Both of them keep remembering the past at different times so we see more of how they were when they were younger and when Wakaba was alive and that’s very much coloring the tenor of their relationship in the present. At this stage, I’m really liking all the characters and the generally realistic approach to the game itself outside of the sudden arrival of several very skilled junior high school players. There’s a lot to like here and I’m savoring every second of it.

Softenni Complete Collection Blu-ray Anime Review

Softenni Blu-ray Front CoverMore boobs than balls.

What They Say:
Playing Soft Tennis (like regular tennis but with softer balls and lighter racquets) is supposed to be the focus of the Shiratama Soft Tennis Team. And for some of the girls, like farm girl/would-be champion Asuna, it mostly is. But when the team’s worst player, Chitose, is also the team captain, could it be that the club is really more about hanging out and having a good time? To be sure, aces Kurusu and exchange student Elizabeth, are great players. But they also seem more interested in cosplay and the team’s dreamy adviser, while violence-prone Kotone might be more at home in a martial arts dojo.

And it would certainly explain why they get into so many odd adventures involving things like giant bears, whales, and ghosts rather than playing! Either way, whether they’re going for the championship or simply socializing, the one thing that’s certain is that they’ll be forging bonds of friendship that will last forever, off court and on, in SOFTENNI!

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this release brings us the original Japanese language track only which is done up in stereo using the DTS-HD MA lossless codec. The show is one that is largely dialogue driven with what it does but it breaks it up nicely with some good action sequences along the way with the tennis elements. These don’t go as intense as a lot of sports shows might but it plays to it to some degree and that gives the mix a bit more life in general. The show has a fairly standard forward soundstage design to it that works in spacing out the characters and providing a bit of depth and distance when necessary, but mostly it just moves about the forward soundstage well. The tennis match aspects get a bit more lively and spread out but it’s still fairly basic overall. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout and we didn’t have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally airing in 2011, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p using the AVC codec. The twelve episodes of this series are spread across two discs with nine on the first and three on the second. Animated by Xebec, the show tends to trend a bit more toward standard and somewhat basic animation design with a focus on bolder primary colors, which at least makes sense with a lot of time spent on tennis courts. The series is not one that has a lot of richness in detail and design for backgrounds or characters but it works in that kind of traditional comedy/spots route that you know what you’re getting in for. The transfer captures this well as it’s a clean and problem free encoding but it’s not a show that stands out in a big way and feels even more basic in terms of animation quality the larger the screen you view it on. Fans of the show will certainly enjoy the high quality presentation in terms of the encoding but it’s not a memorable looking show in this regard.

Packaging:
The packaging design for this release brings us a standard sized Blu-ray case that holds the two discs against the interior walls. The front cover works with a familiar key visual piece of the five main girls together at an angle as they look up and it’s placed well against the tennis court itself, which uses some good material within the segments from the show through the green filter – which hides a whole lot of its pervy side. The character artwork is bright and colorful with a lot to like about it even with familiar designs and it stands out nicely against a number of other shows. The back cover works a lot of green space with the sectioning it does and it works well as it doesn’t feel too busy, though I dislike the angled approach that’s used. The character artwork plays up the fanservice so you know what you’re getting and we get a clean listing of the extras, disc count, and episode count. The summary of the premise works well in what it covers and the technical grid breaks everything down cleanly and accurately so you know what’s involved. No show related inserts are included nor is there a reversible cover.

Menu:
The menus for this release naturally play up the green space as you’d expect with some good backgrounds that lets the character artwork pop. The right side gives us different character pairings for each disc that has them looking upward while using different artwork than the cover while the left side has some nicely themed menu navigation items designed using various shades of green and tennis balls to give it some pop. Everything moves and accesses easily since there’s little here on the first volume outside of the show while the second disc offers easy access to the extras without any problems.

Extras:
The extras for this release bring the familiar with the clean opening and closing sequences but we get a bit more as well. The set has six additional bonus shorts that run between 3-4 minutes each as the girls are at a hot spring and we get all kinds of stories and expansions from there that play up the fanservice even more. It’s about twenty minutes of additional goofiness in the end and it’s certainly amusing.

Softenni Image 3

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Based on the manga of the same name by Ryo Azuchi, Softenni is a twelve episode anime series that kicked off in the spring 2011 season. The show actually landed at the same time that the manga ended as it began in 2008 and finished in 2011 with eight volumes to its name. The anime adaptation was produced by Xebec and they went for a bit more of a basic approach to it than something highly detailed and that pretty much works right for the property as it attempts to do a mild sports comedy project with a weirdly big dose of fanservice and sexuality mixed into it. While you might expect it to be a cute girls play tennis thing, it’s more like pervy girls that occasionally play tennis but mostly spend their time naked.

Middle school girls, mind you.

The show revolves around the Shiratama softenni team that Asuna has put together where they’re all about going the distance but really don’t have the skill or drive to do so. They want it and end up in some competitions along the way, in a kind of light form against the Akadama middle school powerhouse club, but mostly they’re involved in all sorts of training here and there and then the kind of slice of life elements you’d expect from a sports comedy like this. Asuna’s the type that has a lot of energy and enthusiasm for the game but isn’t the greatest player by any stretch and partially joined just to get herself fit. Amusingly, she’s the resident pervert in a big way as she mis-hears a lot of things or imagines a whole lot of situations with friends that are barely a step below hentai level in how they’re presented visually. Which has its moments of amusement to be sure, until you remember we’re talking about middle school girls here.

Softenni Image 1The team that works here is pretty straightforward as we get the standard template type of characters. Kotone really wants to win and puts all her effort into the game and she provides the main romantic point in the show as well as she’s got a huge crush on their coach Mishimagi, something that Asuna visualizes quite often as does Kotone. Mishi’s rather amusing as a kind of lazy type that half-asses his way through coaching, you again get that uncomfortable element with the visual presentation of them two of them in dream sequences together and some of the other misunderstandings. The other girl early on is that of Chitose, the actual club captain that’s the worst of the players on the team but provides the girl with glasses quota as well as the green hair quota. She’s got the enthusiasm and really pushes everything forward in terms of training and competitions, but she’s not able to follow through with ability.

Softenni Image 4The most comical addition comes later with a transfer student from England named Elizabeth Warren. Yes, common name components to be sure that you can imagine someone from Japan picking because they like how it sounds. But coming from a place where someone with the same name is my Senator, it gets to be a little comical watching how things play out. Elizabeth provides for some cuteness in the show as she deals with some of the learning curve with things and provides a little exotic element for the girls as someone who comes from overseas. But it’s not something that’s played up in a big way and while it may be more in the manga, what we get here shifts to the norm quickly and outside of those couple of cute nods here and there it isn’t much of a story point. That said, she’s a cute character that complements the cast well as they check off the necessary boxes.

Beyond the basics of the characters, Softenni doesn’t really offer much more beyond that. This is very much a formula show with its comedy and characters as they play some tennis and engaging in a bit of competition along the way that reminds them that they have a long way to go. We even get an episode with another top tier player that shows them just how much they have to learn with a training course of sorts to get through that’s more like American Gladiator than anything else. It’s comical to watch it because it hits the right kind of silly points, but it also stretches the show from the slightly more real world elements it was trying to keep to when it came to the tennis play itself. The show also doesn’t do much with its characters outside of these areas as there’s little to nothing for most of them when it comes to family and other friends and even the scholastic side gets little attention.

Softenni Image 2Where the show steps away from the usual, as we mentioned before, is in the fanservice department. It feels like a good half of the show focuses on the girls in various states of undress and just going about things in that manner in locker rooms and elsewhere. There’s certainly comedy to be had here and I certainly laughed at it and we get pieces that definitely fit the age and interactions that they’d have. The dream sequences certainly are racy and there’s lot of upskirt looks and shots with the way some of them, such as Asuna, leer at the others as she processes many things in the world through an erotic lense. It just ended up feeling like the show was more about this than anything else and it became a kind of crutch for events rather than something that complemented it or just added a bit of additional color.

In Summary:
Softenni is the kind of show that certainly has an audience and will have a lot of fun with this. Honestly, this is a show that if I was in the actual target range of the show I would have enjoyed immensely at that point. I’m a big fan of fanservice and sexuality to be sure as folks know from other reviews but there are areas where it just works against the show, which it does for me in Softenni. The series has some cute bits and gags along the way – I loved the quick Evangelion bit in it – and we get some silliness with the character interactions that I like. I even like that we’re getting more female characters that are openly engaged in erotic interests as opposed to the way they’re usually presented of finding it abhorrent. But in the end, Softenni just didn’t click well for me.

No Game No Life Volume 2 HeaderWith a pretty strong and stylish TV series under its belt, fans have been hoping for more anime material for No Game No Life since it debuted back in the spring 2014 season. While we don’t have a new TV series, we are getting a new theatrical anime feature that will work to adapt the sixth volume of the light novel series. That novel is already scheduled for release from Yen Press with a planned January 24th, 2017 release date. The premise for it is, “One fateful day, the One True God Tet collapsed from hunger in the back alleys of Elche, only to be saved by Izuna. Tet recounts a story from 6000 years ago, about the Great War” that divided the heavens and tore the earth asunder. About the man who challenged the world and the girl who stayed by his side.”

No date has been set for the theatrical anime feature.

The TV series anime adaptation came from original creator Yuu Kamiya and is directed by Atsuko Ishizuka (The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, NANA) with series composition by Jukki Hanada (Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!, Beyond the Boundary), art direction by Eiji Iwase (Campione!, Divergence Eve) and animation production by Madhouse Studios (Highschool of the Dead, BTOOOM!).

Check out our review of the Collector’s Edition from Sentai Filmworks.

Plot concept: Bored with life and considering it in the real world to be just a “crappy game,” savvy siblings Sora and Shiro have withdrawn into their own fantasy world filled with video games. It is because of this that they are summoned to another world by a boy calling himself “God.” It’s here in this world where Sora and Shiro’s abilities are put to the test. They are now in a world where their fate – and the fate of all humanity – is decided by game. Can they beat the hardest game they’ve ever played?
