Chris Conner & Ato Essandoh Board Netflix Series ‘Altered Carbon’

Altered CarbonWe learned back in January that Netflix picked up the rights with the novel Altered Carbon, which is being produced by Logoeta Kalogridis. Kalogridis is serving as executive producer on it with Skydance TV and they’ve got a ten episode order to bring the 2002 cyberpunk novel to the small screen that Richard Morgan wrote. Now, the casting continues as we get closer to production as it’s been revealed that Ato Essandoh and Chris Conner have boarded the project alongside lead Joel Kinnamon.

According to Deadline, “Conner will play Poe, a centuries-old, highly evolved Artificial Intelligence who currently is inhabiting the psyche of Edgar Allen Poe. He is the proprietor of the Raven, a luxury hotel that caters to the more discerning guest who values the ideals of an older, more civilized age. Essandoh will portray Vernon Elliot, an ex-Protectorate Tactical Marine whose wife was imprisoned and whose daughter was killed. He’s a man with little to live for, save the hope of bringing his family back together. By all accounts, he should be the sworn enemy of Takeshi Kovacs, but their proclivity for violence and family draws them together.”

Previously cast was Joel Kinnaman as the lead character of Takeshi Kovacs.

“Altered Carbon is one of the most seminal pieces of post-cyberpunk hard science fiction out there — a dark, complex noir story that challenges our ideas of what it means to be human when all information becomes encodable, including the human mind,” Kalogridis said at the time of the book acquisition.

Novel Concept: In the twenty-fifth century, humankind has spread throughout the galaxy, monitored by the watchful eye of the U.N. While divisions in race, religion, and class still exist, advances in technology have redefined life itself. Now, assuming one can afford the expensive procedure, a person’s consciousness can be stored in a cortical stack at the base of the brain and easily downloaded into a new body (or “sleeve”) making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen.

Ex-U.N. envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. Dispatched one hundred eighty light-years from home, re-sleeved into a body in Bay City (formerly San Francisco, now with a rusted, dilapidated Golden Gate Bridge), Kovacs is thrown into the dark heart of a shady, far-reaching conspiracy that is vicious even by the standards of a society that treats “existence” as something that can be bought and sold. For Kovacs, the shell that blew a hole in his chest was only the beginning. . . .

Directed by Itsuro Kawasaki, it’s working with scripts by Sayaka Harada and character designs by Yukiko Ban. Animation is produced by Studio Pierrot.

Unlike the male version which is set in modern Japan, the female version is set on another world. The people of this world live in a separate dimension from people of Earth. However, they manage and guide the spiritual energy of Earth people, thus converting it into life energy and maintaining a relationship of co-existence and co-prosperity between the two worlds. The women of this world are known by many on Earth as “goddesses.” The six characters (representing December to May) are students at a school that gathers talented individuals striving to become goddesses.

KochikameWith the upcoming Kochikame special almost here, Bandai Visual is getting a little creative in how they’re going to bring it out on home video down the line a bit. With the special being a part of the 40th anniversary of the property, they’re opting to do a DVD box set that will arrive on December 22nd, 2016 that’s priced at 30,000 yen. The set will contain the special plus forty select episodes of the series that ran for 373 episodes. Over the course of seven discs they’ll be doing “best of” pieces where they break it down like this:

  1. Best episodes as chosen by the cast
  2. Best episodes as chosen by the directors
  3. Best episodes as chosen by the former manga editors
  4. Best episodes as chosen by the former manga editors
  5. Best episodes as chosen by the fans
  6. Best episodes as chosen by the fans
  7. Best episodes as chosen by the fans (3 episodes) plus the special

Extras on the set include a booklet, the upcoming special, and a specially designed box.

Plot concept: The typical Kochikame plot involves Ryo-san coming up with a money-making scheme by inventing a new gadget or capitalizing on a fad, achieving great success, calling on Nakagawa’s help as things turn sour, and finally losing it all as the fad runs out of steam or out of control. While the plots are gag-driven, much of the humor comes from the juxtaposition of mundane characters with the bizarrely incongruous (Nakagawa’s wealth, Maria’s appeal, everyone’s lack of actual police work), most of which is never explained or rationalized in the slightest.

In a world that favors the Best over the rest, it’s hard for an average girl to find where she belongs, but one thing’s for sure–until she gets there, it’s going to be a wild ride.

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this series is done with the original Japanese in stereo while the English mix gets a 5.1 bump, both of which are encoded using the Dolby TrueHD lossless codec. The show has a pretty good range of things that it does as it works across the forward soundstage as dialogue and action is well placed. The show has a lot of characters on stage pretty often so there’s some good placement to be had throughout and there’s good moments of depth as well as needed. The dialogue is kept pretty clean and clear throughout with no problems to be had with it. The action steps things up a bit more and that works well, especially with the 5.1 mix, as it runs across the soundstage and gives the whole thing a fuller and richer feeling in general. Both language tracks are clean and clear throughout and we didn’t have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally airing in 2015, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p using the AVC codec. The twelve episodes are spread across two discs with nine episodes on the first and three on the second. Animated by Wit Studio, the series has a really great visual approach to its design and color palette and it just comes to life in a great way through the high definition presentation here. It’s vibrant and almost too vibrant at times with the level of pop to some of the colors but the result is a series that definitely draws you into it. The transfer brings all the detail to light and with some beautifully fluid animation along the way it’s definitely the kind of show that you’re glad can be presented like it is. It’s very appealing with a clean and colorful look that lets the creative effort come through without problems.

Packaging:
The packaging for this release brings us a standard sized Blu-ray case that comes with an o-card for the first pressing of it. This design is replicated with the case artwork itself, though the o-card is brighter and more colorful simply because of the difference in materials. The front cover works with the familiar key visual of the four girls on the bike with all the little widgets and bits that gives it life with the rainbow colors and the star stones themselves. The cityscape is kept simple but it sticks to the design aesthetic of the series in a good way. The back cover is a bit more traditional with some character artwork in the background and a nice shot of Nozomi along the right in the foreground. The summary of the premise is solid enough to make out the foundations of the show and we get a good breakdown of the extras included. The rest of the cover is given over to the usual array of shots from the show and the dual format technical grid that covers everything clearly, including listing how many minutes the extras are – sans commentary tracks, of course. While there are no inserts included we do get artwork on the reverse side that’s done in illustration style as it showcases most of the cast across it in great form.

Rolling_Girls_12a Rolling_Girls_10b Rolling_Girls_10a Rolling_Girls_9a

Menu:
The menu design for this release works it in a simple approach as we don’t get clip based material here but rather just a static image – and the same one for both discs. That’s essentially just using the character artwork from the front cover along the right with bold swathes of color behind them to give it more pop. With the logo along the upper left, the navigation is kept to the bottom with a nicely colored red stripe with white text that’s very easy to read and navigate. The menu works without problems as both the main piece and as a pop-up menu during playback.

Extras:
The extras for this release are fairly standard when you get down to it but are welcome. We get the clean versions of the opening and closing sequences as well as a collection of all the next episode previews as they aren’t part of the home video version. For English language fans we get a pair of audio commentaries that bring the staff and cast together to talk about the show in the 8th and 12th episodes which is definitely fun as everyone is pretty enthusiastic about the series.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
An original series that landed in the winter 2015 season that had two manga series that kicked off just before it to complement it, The Rolling Girls got a lot of attention thanks to Wit Studio being involved in it after their work on Attack on Titan. The show is one that dazzled a lot when it first landed for its visual design and that’s definitely a striking and noteworthy point here. Original series have a lot of work to do in exploring what they are since they’re often not working with the familiar structure of manga or novel adaptations and that can be both good and bad things. You end up having to take a look at this more as an overall project rather than the individual pieces in some ways since they’re largely telling a complete story.

The concept of the show is an interesting one but is also one that essentially fails in the execution. We’re introduced to a Japan some ten years after the end of the “Great Tokyo War” where for reasons unexplained the political and economic masters of the country have disappeared. Without those guiding hands for everyone else the country falls back to its roots with ten prefectures becoming their own city-states once again, though with vigilante agreements that exist in how they interact with each other through sanctioned gangs. It sounds like an apocalyptic setting in the making but instead each of these areas have seen a massive resurgence in color and creativity in how it all looks. It’s almost overpowering in many cases with the visual design because there’s so much to take in and just so much color to it as well.

Rolling_Girls_1a Rolling_Girls_1b Rolling_Girls_2a Rolling_Girls_2b

The focus is on one particular group that’s lead by Maccha Green, who is known as Masami, a young woman that wears your traditional green sentai suit as she works with others in group to handle Tokorozawa. She hides her identity for a few reasons, one of which is so that her childhood friend of Nozomi doesn’t figure it out as she just wants to enjoy her time with her. Of course, everyone but Nozomi knows that she’s actually Maccha Green so it’s kind of comical when she’s forced to reveal it by a rival group that’s threatening a number of new recruits to her group known as the Propellers. For Nozomi it’s a shock and one that leads to Maccha having to take some time off from the group due to injuries. That sets things in motion for Nozomi to try and help out in doing the jobs and requests that come in for Maccha Green. A simple enough setup and one that will take her to several prefectures and meet a range of people.

And that’s what the show essentially is, a series of mostly one-off episodes that introduces to a variety of stories and characters where the focus is more on the characters of the week than the core group. Nozomi’s looking to learn how to be a Best like Maccha Green is, which is seemingly tied to a heart shaped stone that most of them have, and naturally the discovery along the way is that what gives them their abilities is already within them. The stone seems to simply magnify it all, enhance it to another level, which provides for these kinds of over the top aspects that we see in the fights with the abilities and overall style that we get. It’s visually appealing and makes for some really great sequences as each episode brings us a different setting and characters that have the stones. For Nozomi, it just reinforces her own desire to be like this beyond just wanting to be like Maccha Green and she draws a range of influences while being that standard good character that only wants to do right by others.

Rolling_Girls_3b Rolling_Girls_3a Rolling_Girls_4a Rolling_Girls_4b

Nozomi isn’t the only one that goes on this journey as she gets three others that come along for it. Yukina is a quiet girl that gets lost easily and ends up visiting the Propellers early for help only to end up becoming a member without realizing it. She has her useful moments but is essentially the quiet wallflower type that doesn’t have much going on here and in the end really doesn’t change that much. Similar is Ai, the outgoing sporty type that wears little and is looking for a place of her own after being kicked out of the group that she was involved with. She provides the physical side of things but also some of the more playful things, such as the whole pillow fight sequence that was cute. The weirdest character in the end is that of Chiaya, a short girl who is looking for the stones herself and she’s someone that seems to know a whole lot about things she shouldn’t when it comes to the other three when she first meets them. That it turns out along the way that she’s an alien? Well, that’s just one more weird piece to a weird series.

The Rolling Girls is a show that introduces a lot in the first episode and just keeps doing that episode after episode, to the point where it really became too much after just the first couple of episodes. That reinforced the idea that this likely works better in smaller doses than a full on marathon, especially since it’s a series that’s fully about the journey rather than the destination. The overall idea behind it is discovering that you have what it takes to be the best in yourself and you don’t need anything else to do that, though friends are certainly a big plus. Each episode works a standalone tale that introduces a new area with its own quirks to that locale, which may mean more to those far more familiar with those areas and their histories. For me it turned into an experience where it all just blurred because of how often it shifted and the fact that the four girls, central as they are to the series, often took a back seat to the characters introduced every week with their problems. A familiar thing to be sure in many series but here it just became something where it was overwhelming.

Rolling_Girls_8a Rolling_Girls_8b Rolling_Girls_7b Rolling_Girls_6a

In Summary:
The Rolling Girls is one of those curious series that is full of creativity and design that really showcases what anime can do and become. But it’s also one that’s so overflowing with creativity that it’s not channeled enough to tell an engaging story. I loved the visuals for it and what it did in presenting an intriguing world but it’s also a world where you just have to accept that weird things happen and how its setup doesn’t make a true lick of functional sense. I can see this being something that worked very well in a weekly format where you just soak up the single episode at a time and all that it presents rather than everything all at once. A show like The Rolling Girls has a strong sense of being a cult title and one that will have a very faithful following simply because of what it achieves visually.

Japanese ‘D.Gray-man Hallow’ Anime DVD/BD Releases Delayed

$

0

D.Gray-Man 2016The upcoming summer series D.Gray-Man Hallow is close to finishing up its Japanese broadcast and simulcast and we previously had Aniplex Japan breaking out the information for the home video release run. That’s now taken a rare turn as the releases have been delayed with no new dates given, essentially taking the whole run off the calendar. According to the official site, it looks to be quality related and new dates will be revealed as soon as they’re finalized. The thirteen episode cour will be getting a six volume release where the first disc has three episodes and the remainder have two. That means the first disc is priced at 7,200 yen for Blu-ray and 6,200 yen for DVD while the remainder are 6,500 yen and 5,500 yen respectively.

The new series was directed by Yoshiharu Ashino based on the scripts from Michiko Yokote, Tatsuto Higuchi and Kenichi Yamashita. Yosouke Kabashima served as the chief animation director and character designer with it all being animated at TMS Entertainment.

The Japanese cast includes Ayumu Murase as Allen Walker, Takuya Satou as Yuu Kanda, Natsuki Hanae as Lavi, Ai Kakuma as Lenalee Lee, Yutaka Aoyama as Earl Millenium, Masakazu Nishida as Tyki Mikk, Yui Kondou as Road Kamelot, Soichiro Hoshi as Wisely, Ryouta Asari as Alma Karma, Noriaki Sugiyama as Aleister Crowley III, Ami Koshimizu as Miranda Lotto, Houchuu Ootsuka as Bookman, Go Inoue as Komui Lee, Tomokazu Sugita as Reever Wenhamm, Mitsuhiro Ichiki as Johnny Gill, Tooru Ookawa as Malcolm C. Rouvelier, Takuya Eguchi as Madarao, Soma Saito as Tokusa and Rie Suegara as Tewaku.

With the original series back in 2006 that ran for 103 episodes, only the first half of it was licensed and released in North America by FUNimation. Which will make this interesting going forward if FUNimation tackles the simulcast and it is a sequel as to whether the option on the missing half will be exercised and if we’ll get a new re-release of what was previously brought out.

The series is based on the manga from Katsura Hoshino that began in 2004. It originally kicked off in Shounen Jump and then moved to Jump SQ back in 2009. It’s currently up to 24 volumes total, which Viz Media has released in North America in full.

Plot concept: Toward the end of the 19th century, Allen Walker officially joins the organization of Exorcists that destroys the beings known as Akuma—mechanic weapons made by the Millennium Earl with the suffering souls of the dead. Allen has both a cursed eye and an anti-Akuma weapon as an arm, bearing the power of “Innocence,” a gift given to him as an apostle of God. Allen, along with his fellow Exorcists, must put a stop to the Millennium Earl’s ultimate plot that could lead to the destruction of the world and all who live on it.

Ninjak #19 Review

Ninjak Issue 19 CoverThe old dudes continue to travel in style and chaos.

Creative Staff:
Story: Matt Kindt
Art: Khari Evans, Andres Guinaldo
Colors: Ulises Arreola, Chris Sotomayar
Letters: Dave Sharpe

What They Say:
Riddled with an uncanny disease in the present, Colin King has seen what the future holds – and it is death! Decades from today, destruction looms…and Ninjak and the Eternal Warrior will be our only hope! But even after years on the battlefield, are these weathered veterans still strong enough to forestall an evil that now threatens all of humanity? Glimpse the future of Valiant’s two most dangerous men here as Ninjak and the Eternal Warrior baptize their formative partnership in the blood of many men!

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
Ninjak continues to be just one odd book in terms of how it works to me, jumping to different concepts and ideas with some continuity between it that allows it to work but still feels weird and jarring. After a pretty good arc that was more personal for Colin, coming after a less than interesting Deadside arc, this one keeps us a couple of decades in the future where he’s off and running with Gilad, the Eternal Warrior. The book is working well enough in that kind of loose sense with the story that Kindt can pull off but this issue just feels weaker in terms of art for me, especially combined with some almost overpowering coloring that simply doesn’t click well. I liked some of what Khari Evans did the last time around but this just feels a bit lighter and a little more rushed.

With the pair having gone through the portal in order to give chase to Fakir, we get a kind of weird use of Deadspace as a way to travel elsewhere. It’s actually a little fun watching how Colin just focuses on the mission while Gilad is distracted by all the weirdness here. With Colin having understood how to navigate these kinds of places it makes sense and is fun, especially since it lands them in Vegas and Colin is even more comfortable here. With his connections and basic spycraft, we get a decent bit of suaveness mixed in, some action, and leads toward Fakir. That in turn brings us to the bigger player of Silk here who is orchestrating something quite decidedly magical in order to gain power and immortality. It’s like we jump from point to point without much depth to it while enjoying the superficiality. It’s definitely fun watching Gilad and Colin together since they’re the definition of the odd couple and the humor works, but it also feels like it needed more space instead of the quick push from point to point. The dynamic between the pair is definitely enjoyable though and is what salvages things.

The backup story is the more interesting piece for me here as it keeps us in the present and after the events of the last arc. With his life in ruins he’s now in a super meditative state and that’s got Neville concerned and Livewire as well as she’s come to help. There’s some fun high tech moments here as they try to figure out what’s going on with him and it gives hint to some dark magical things from Deadside that may be involved – and may date back quite some time. This’ll bring us back to some of the Deadside elements in the real world that could be fun, though I can’t say I’m exactly thrilled to end up back in Punk Mambo’s orbit. While there are things I like in the main story I do wish that this was the main story.

In Summary:
Ninjak is working two tracks that work well enough for different reasons but neither is really compelling. The future storyline is fun just in seeing how this pair work together and how Colin has aged and the dynamic of it all but the whole Fakir and Silk thing just doesn’t click for me as it’s not all that compelling. It’s like just something that’s there. The present day story in the backup is a lot more fun since it’s smaller and more personal and it’s looking to set up other things, which are likely to impact the future storyline as well, but I just liked seeing what it is that’s going on after the recent arc. Ninjak is a book that has a lot going for it but just keeps working at weird pacing and story ideas that just feel weirdly rushed. After nineteen issues I keep hoping things will even out some but I’m just not expecting it at this point. Thankfully, there’s plenty of fun things along the way and the taste of what could be.

‘One-Punch Man’ Wins Toonami Anime Ratings As DBZ Kai Takes Week Off

$

One-Punch Man Episode 5What happens if Toonami gives the 11:30pm slot to someone other than Dragon Ball Z Kai? Well, we got to see that this week as the show didn’t air and One-Punch Man instead took the slot, going from 1.149 million viewers to 1.277 million viewers – essentially the same as Kai last week. Holiday weekends are always a little dicey and this one is no exception as the Toonami block essentially gave the whole night over to the show to run episodes. Not surprisingly, the numbers drop as time goes on but it holds up a lot better in later hours than we usually see from marathon block shows.
