Masou Gakuen VisualThe summer 2016 anime adaptation of the light novel series Hybrid x Heart Magias Academy Ataraxia is getting its home video release handled by Kadokawa. While we’ve still got a few weeks until it actually arrives, Kadokawa has now put out a trio of new TV spots that are all the same in the visuals but allows three of the leading characters to narrate their own spots. The series is getting a six-volume release on DVD and Blu-ray priced at 6,600 yen and 7,600 yen respectively with both editions being listed as limited editions when they begin on September 30th, 2016.

The series is being directed by Hiroyuki Furukawa based on the scripts coming from Yasutomo Yamada. KanaMiyai is serving as the character designer for the series and it’s being produced at Production IMS. Keita Hagino, Yousuke Itou, Kana Miyai and Kazua Moramae are working as the chief animation directors for the show.

The opening theme song is miele paradisio from Iori Nomizu.

The cast includes Ayaka Kimura, Hikaru Isshiki, Ichigo Momoi, Rino Kawashima, Kenji Akabane as Kizuna Hida, Akari Kageyama as Aine Chidorigafuchi, Juri Nagatsuma as Hayuru Himekawa, Chinatsu Akasaki as Julicia Farandole, Rika Kinugawa as Reiri Hida, Hina Kino as Silvia Silkcut, Iori Nomizu as Kei Shikina and Kazusa Aranami as Momo Kurumizawa.

The original novel series by Masamune Kuji began back in February 2014 and has quickly done well with seven volumes out, a manga adaptation that’s underway and a drama CD.

Plot concept: Hida Kizuna possesses the HHG (Heart Hybrid Gear) ability, but it is not strong enough to make him particularly important. His older sister calls him to transfer to a strategic defense school, where many of the students (many of which are large-breasted girls) use their HHG abilities to fight invaders from another world while wearing extremely skimpy pilot outfits. Kizuna’s fighting ability doesn’t measure up, but his sister has another plan; getting the girls to have erotic experiences with Kizuna, so that it will allow them to replenish their energy or power-up. It looks like his new school life is going to be full of embarrassment!

Tonkatsu DJ VisualThe home video releases have been scheduled for the Tonkatsu DJ Agetaro series and it’s working a method that should work decently enough for the targeted audiences. Everything is set to land on October 28th, 2016.

Plot concept: Agetarou works at his family’s tonkatsu restaurant in Shibuya, but he’s not very excited by the work. One day, he takes a delivery to the staff of a night club, and the worker lets him in to enjoy the club for a while. Agetarou finds that he loves the club, with its relaxed people and cute girls, all enjoying the music supplied by the DJ. He continues going to the club, until the night comes when the guest American DJ Big Master Fly puts on a show. Agetarou is inspired by Big Master Fly, and realizes that the groove of being a DJ is very similar to the groove of being a tonkatsu chef. Now Agetarou is determined to master both disciplines, though he is most excited to become a DJ!

World Break Aria Of Curse For A Holy Swordsman Blu-ray Anime Review

World Break CoverTo save the future we must reconnect with the past!

What They Say:
Moroha Haimura of World Break isn’t your typical teenager. In fact, he’s quite unique compared to his fellow classmates at the high-profile Akane Academy. Along with other gifted students, he trains as a “Savior” where he will learn to harness his special inherited mystical powers from a former life.

However, unlike his peers, Moroha not only has one past life, but two! This means he can command both the Dark Arts of spell magic and the Light Arts of the body itself. Because of his rare talents, he quickly climbs the ranks to join the “Strikers,” an elite group of Saviors at the academy. With the other Strikers at his side, Moroha must protect the fate of the world against giant, evil beasts—all while juggling the hearts of the jiggly girls constantly vying for his affection. With each battle, Moroha learns more and more about his two heroic past lives and the powers hidden within.

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this series brings us the original Japanese language track in its stereo form while the new English dub gets a 5.1 bump, both of which are presented in the Dolby TrueHD lossless codec. The show works a pretty good mix to it as there’s a lot of action throughout it that lets it flex its muscles a bit in this rea. The range of magic and skills used with the combat is pretty good while the fantasy-era creatures have their own pluses as well. There’s a good bit of impact with a number of scenes with the bass and in general it moves across the soundstage well to engage with what’s going on. The dialogue side is pretty solid as well as we often get a few people at a time in a place going at it and both tracks handle this well with what it does when it moves around or plays with distance and spacing. Dialogue is clean and clear throughout and we didn’t have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally airing in 2015, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p with the AVC codec. The twelve episodes are spread across two discs with nine on the first and three on the second. Animated by Diomedea, the series has a really good look about it with the color tone that uses the vibrancy to its advantage, from the magic to the hair and the flesh tones as well. The series may not have a ton of detail and some of the CG work may be a bit shaky, but there’s certainly an appeal to how it looks as it has a lot of pop to it. And, with all that fanservice, the quality is definitely put into the production there. The transfer captures the look of the show well and while it may not stand out compared to some really high quality productions the actual result is really solid and well done.

Packaging:
The packaging for this release is done with a standard sized Blu-ray case that holds both formats inside on hinges while also coming with an o-card. That replicates the artwork from the case itself though there’s a touch more vibrancy to it thanks to the different material used. The front cover works with a familiar key visual that has the bulk of the main cast of girls around it while also, in a somewhat rare move, including not only the lead male with Moroha but also including a smaller image of Edward toward the back. It doesn’t even play up the fanservice all that much which is kind of surprising. The back cover provides a little more sexuality with the two lead female characters in their classic garb that blends into the indistinct blue background while the left side breaks down the summary of the premise in a good way. It’s clean and easy to read with the color choices and it breaks out the extras well too. The row of shots from the show along the bottom are decent enough but small enough to not matter and we get an easy to read technical grid that details both formats in an easy to read form. While there are no show related inserts with this release we do get artwork on the reverse side with Elena getting the left panel to herself and a pair of other girls on the right side.

Menu:
Another area that reinforces the “get it done” kind of release that this feels like is the menu as we don’t get clips or music playing along but rather static screens. And we don’t get different backgrounds for each disc either but rather the same one. It’s a decent one that uses the blue background from the cover and places upper body shots of the main trio together with a good look of seriousness to them. The detail is nicely done and it has the color to stand out well, especially with the golden yellow logo offset to the upper right. The navigation strip along the bottom uses a slightly different shade of blue and has the text done in a kind of fun little white font that works well both as the main menu and as the pop-up menu during playback. Everything works and is fully function but just lacks that little extra oomph we see with most releases.

Extras:
The extras for this release are fairly straightforward but welcome as we get the clean versions of the opening and closing sequences, which are pretty good in and of themselves, and two minutes worth of TV spots promoting the series. Sadly, this series did not warrant any commentary tracks.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Based on the light novel series written by Akamitsu Awamura and illustrated by Refeia, World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman is a twelve episode series that aired in the winter 2015 season as animated by Diomedea. The light novels, which are ongoing as of this writing, began in 2012 and are fourteen in number and with a slow moving manga adaptation going on as well. The GA Bunko series is one that has done well overall and it was little surprise when the anime was announced. The property works as a good blending of ideas but is also one that doesn’t really dig into or explore the rich possibilities that we get from it, which is a little frustrating. Hence it being a light novel, I assume.

world-break-episode-01The premise is straightforward enough as in this world like our but with a few big differences we’re introduced to Akane Academy in Japan, one of several places around the world that teaches students known as Saviors. These are people who have a big connection to their pasts with awakened memories of lives previously lived, often just the one that’s important to the fight against Metaphysicals. These are just strange monsters from another dimension that pop up here and there (not monsters of the week, thankfully), and those past lives offer help in working to defeat them. Saviors have magical abilities that they have to master as well as weapons they can conjure up in order to fight them. They’re pretty big and we get a few dragon-like ones as well that helps to explain away some myths and legends.

The concept is one that’s easily accessible and we get to work our way into it by the arrival of a new Savior student named Moroha Haimura. Moroha’s a kind of tired slacker to some degree that’s just into all of this because of the potential for having his basic needs met for survival. With him sleeping through the opening ceremonies it’s surprise that a fellow student named Satsuki gives him grief over it. The twist though is that the two shared a strong past together in another life as they were brother and sister. And now her love for her brother, which she feels greatly along with other memories that surface, can now be explored in non-creepy ways since they’re not related in this life. It’s an interesting idea that doesn’t get anywhere near the actual exploration that it could in favor of quick gags from time to time. Satsuki’s your bubbly type that’s insecure about herself but totally devoted to the brother that was in the form of Moroha. Moroha, for his part, is an interesting case as he’s able to remember two different past lives and that increases the interest in him by the adults. So much so that he’s later fast tracked into the S-rank level because of what he can draw upon and his obviously legendary past life.

World Break Header 6-15It’s no surprise that he’s got such power behind him because he’s the lead character and that’s how that goes. That past also connects him with another student named Shizuno as she’s the Witch of the Netherworld that he dealt with in that past life as well, resulting in him freeing her from bonds back then and that bond now transferred onto him. She’s naturally the opposite of Satsuki in a lot of ways as she’s more serious and has a larger busy, though Satsuki’s not bad off in this area herself. The two have an obvious competition that grows over Moroha as time goes on, both of them working a different approach to expressing themselves toward him, and it works well enough since there’s some variety to it as we get the characters present forms as well as their past forms. These connections get touched upon and while there are things to like with both, it’s Shizuno’s that shines more just because she has a more interesting past as opposed to being just a sister like Satsuki was.

Would you be surprised that there are more girls, some a little younger, some a little older, that come into the mix as well? Variety is the spice of life with action/comedy/fanservice series like this and there’s certainly predictability there. But it’s well done as it’s fleshed out because of the past lives that are touched upon and the variety of abilities and skills that come into play, some with welcome problems such as the principal whose teleportation power can only be used once a day. What becomes interesting about the show in a way is that the Metaphysicals themselves are used somewhat minimally as opposed to being a monster of the week series and when they do arrive they’re fairly big and almost outlandish at times, such as the island-sized one that roams across the landscape. These creatures have a huge impact to be sure but they also lack some resonance because there is no actual villain in the season (though perhaps later books cover that?). So while there’s a threat it’s just sort of there and to be dealt with from time to time rather than being the driving force behind the show.

Seiken Tsukai no World BreakA lot of the tension and fighting within the show comes from other members of the Academy that are jockeying for position or take a dislike to a new student like Moroha doing so well and being so important – and gaining as many girls after him as he does. There are some fun exploratory fights with powers here but also some training pieces to determine just how far he can go at the moment in figuring out his rank. The show introduces a Russian character for a while as well as the leader of the academy there sees him as a threat and is seeking to either control or eliminate him. There are some good fights with the setup for that but I actually like that Moroha, in his growing confidence that’s fueled by his past life, instead opts to take the fight to this woman, The Terror, directly as a kind of personal war so that it doesn’t involve the academy. It’s a familiar tactic but it’s executed so well and with some big action sequences that it works really well as the true final act of the series as opposed to the seemingly tacked on fight against the Metaphysicals.

In Summary:
It’s easy to write off World Break as just another light novel anime adaptation with no substance to it. There are a lot of things that could be explored with these past lives and connections and how it impacts the kids psychologically but that’s not what it wants to focus on. It’s a light and fast moving series but one that really works well as the characters are a whole lot of fun, the designs are pretty appealing, and the mixture of elements here with the magic, the slightly near-future setting, and a focus on threats by other people as opposed to the Metaphysicals hit a certain sweet spot for me. I couldn’t remember a thing about the series prior to watching it in marathon form here but I came away from it with a pretty positive feeling and would love to see more of the novels adapted as it was simply well executed here.

Anne Hathaway Dreams of Giant Monsters in ‘Colossal’ Film’s First Clip

$

colossalThe Toronto International Film Festival is underway and one of the films that will be playing is Colossal from Warner Bros. Pictures. The project has been an interesting one to watch because it had a lengthy lawsuit put against it by TOHO believing that the use of a giant monster was essentially copyright infringement of Godzilla. With all of that settled, the film is getting its due and the first clip for it has surfaced as well.

“We tried to come up with a new monster,” director Nacho Vigalondo says to EW. “We’ve seen some of those in many films, and we tried to find something that feels unique. As the movie goes on, and you realize how this monster is connected to Gloria, you understand the nature of the beast from a new angle. So yeah, the monster has a twist.”

Written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, the film stars Anne Hathaway as Gloria, Dan Stevens as Gloria’s ex-boyfriend, Jason Sudeikis, Austin Stowell and Tim Blake Nelson as Garth.

Plot concept: After losing her job and boyfriend in New York, Gloria moves back to her hometown only to discover how strangely connected she is to an enormous creature.

Bananya Episode #10 Anime Review

Bananya Epsiode 10Let’s get high with Bananya!

What They Say:
“Bananya and the Balloon”

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After some cute fun with a good portion of the cast the last time around in the bathroom – where there is no littler box, Bananya shifts gears a bit this time around as a balloon enters the picture. With it in the living room, it naturally attracts the attention of the gang as they try to get closer to it as it floats about. Bananya gets the closest, which is cute, and they eventually get it close so they can start exploring it and all the thrills that it offers. Bouncing Bananya’s is certainly cute at first but they get so hyper over it, comically so, that you just wait for the fallout in hopes that it’ll be as good as it should be. Of course, it’s a kids show so it goes only so far, but you have to appreciate the fallout from it.

In Summary:
Bananya has a cute episode overall as a small number of the gang get to play with a balloon that’s floating about and goes about as expected. The simplicity of the series is both a strength and weakness that it hasn’t quite mastered well but it has these one-off episodes that are more amusing than they should be, even if I know I’m foolishly wishing that it would go just a bit further and crazier with the fallout.

Tsurezurenaru Ayatsuri Mugenan pay a visit in this week’s Tokiko’s R-R-R-Room.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After a less than engaging dance lesson the last time around, this episode brings us back to Tokiko’s R-R-R-Room to work with Tsurezurenaru Ayatsuri Mugenan. This trio is certainly amusing just for the daruma as even Tokiko can’t figure out how to deal with it and just goes right to commercial, which features the trio in a historical way. It’s not a great commercial itself but I love the quality of the animation for it and just the overall presentation. A and Un do pretty well in being serious and introducing themselves but Tokiko just can’t handle Darudayu and how that plays out, especially since it goes very big and elaborate. Tokiko’s expressions are priceless and I really like the way the trio are presented with the animation quality as it just takes the whole thing up a few notches.

In Summary:
Show By Rock!! Short!! has a simple enough episode here that’s really little more than character introductions and a commercial spot within it to give the cast something else to do. It’s not great in that sense to be sure but I really do like the visual quality of it with the pop of color and just the designs across the board. Even Tokiko gets to take things up a few notches, which is frightening enough. This is still a somewhat odd series overall but it’s hitting some amusing notes along the way.

A Silent Voice VisualWe’re getting closer to the release of the Japanese anime film A Silent Voice, also known as Koe no Katachi, and that means the next wave of marketing comes from the TV spot department. The film has a September 17th, 2016 debut there (and hopefully with an overseas run as well) and now the Kyoto Animation channel has unveiled two character spots for it that focuses on the dynamic between the leads. Both of them also highlights the theme song “Ai wo Shita no wa” from AIKO.

The previously announced cast includes:

  • Miyu Irino as Shouya Ishida
  • Saori Hayami as Shouko Nishimiya
  • Aoi Yūki as Yuzuru Nishiya
  • Kensho Ono as Tomohiro Nagatsu
  • Yuki Kaneko as Naoka Ueno
  • Yui Ishikawa as Miyoko Sahara
  • Megumi Han as Miki Kawai
  • Toshiyuki Toyonaga as Toshi Mashibasa

The film is based on the manga by Yoshitoki Oima that’s being released in North America by Kodansha Comics. Produced by Kyoto Animation, the film is directed by Naoka Yamada based on the script from Reiko Yoshida with Futoshi Nishiya handling the character designs.

Plot concept: Shoya is a bully. When Shoko, a girl who can’t hear, enters his elementary school class, she becomes his favorite target, and Shoya and his friends goad each other into devising new tortures for her. But the children’s cruelty goes too far. Shoko is forced to leave the school, and Shoya ends up shouldering all the blame. Six years later, the two meet again. Can Shoya make up for his past mistakes, or is it too late?

Shonen Ashibe Episode 14“Ashibe’s Open House”

What They Say:
A cute, pleasant story of Ashibe and Goma-chan and their unusual school and their neighbors. Sometimes endearing, sometimes bizarre, it’s a fun anime for the whole family!

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After being off the air for the month of August as there were other events going on, such as the Olympics, Shonen Ashibe returns and it’s very welcome to reconnect with this group. The property surprised me over the course of the first thirteen episodes with how well it connected for me in making me laugh and enjoy the silliness of this family and friends but also with just how much it made me totally fall in love with Sugao and his struggles to get back to Ashibe.

With this episode, the school is hitting up its open house period and that means we get some teachers going all out to get in proper shape for it beforehand, which is definitely some amusing physical comedy from Tendou. The payoff is certainly there as he flexes for the incoming parents in all his glory! The open house is fun just to see the parents since you get one that’s famous and then you get Ashibe’s pa having his fun there. The kids reactions to some of it is pretty fun too and I had to laugh at Ashibe’s father getting into the class and answering questions that Tendou is tossing out.Of course, it’s just a mess across the board, but the silliness is just spot on with what it does. Especially the frustration in the kids as they want to get back on track with everything instead of the distraction of the parents.

You also have to laugh that Goma-chan lucks out with some good answers along the way with his trademark sound coming across like the number nine. The counting by Goma’s is a fun sequence as well since Tendou mysteriously has something like a dozen stuffed animal versions of him and having that many together is definitely an overload of cuteness. Tendou as a teacher certainly doesn’t come across well here and I imagine it’s something that makes a lot of kids laugh in a big way since it is silly and the way it’s presented hits a lot of very good notes, especially with how he handles math.

In Summary:
While not the strongest of episodes in the series run, Shonen Ashibe is a series that I’m glad to see return after being off the air for far too many weeks overall. The show does some cute stuff with the open house here and it’s a good mix of material with Goma that becomes far too adorable and the simple wackiness that is Tendou as he does his best to be the kind of teacher that he is. Of course, there’s a hilarious twist right at the end that just makes it all the more worthwhile as well.

Sugao Watch: My heart aches with the lack of Sugao-ness.The few seconds we get for his open house is priceless, however.

Highschool Life of a Fuidanshi Episode 10“Worldly Desires of 801 (Yaoi)”

What They Say:
The kids go to the shrine for their New Year’s greetings and wishes.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After the fun of Halloween the last time around I’m glad the show skipped Christmas and went to New Year’s instead. The wishes for the day are just what you’d expect from Rumi and Ryou, though at least Ryou wishes for happiness for others. Nakamura holds his wish secret for the moment as we get a few other people showing up from the younger classes, which has its own brief silliness since they’re working the shrine. There are cute bits with it but it’s the kind of character expansion the show didn’t really need since the focus taken away from the core group just doesn’t click as well since, at least in anime form, they’re going to be mostly one-off additions.

In Summary:
The shrine visit is certainly a familiar tradition and it plays out about as expected here. The main trio here is definitely fun to watch together and seeing Rumi taking as strong a position as she does at times with money and her hobbies/passions is cute. Ryou is a lot more laid back this time around, which reduces some of the fun, but Nakamura’s time works well overall. It’s not a bad episode but less of it clicked here for me compared to the last time around since it felt like it was going through the motions more than anything else.

ozmafia-episode-10“Hazardous Materials”

What They Say:
Fuuka is an amnesiac. As she wanders through the unfamiliar town, she realizes that she’s being chased. It’s one of the mafia families running the town — the Oz family — that saves her. In a town where friendship and fighting exist together, Fuuka must decide who’s hand to accept. And then there’s the question: why doesn’t she remember anything?

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
As we get closer to the end of the run I’ll admit I don’t expect much beyond appealing animation, though we get some cute things here and there. This time around we get Scarlet under a bit of threat, though he doesn’t take it too seriously at first. This episode focuses on the arrival of Ande from the Oz Academy, an outgoing young woman that’s just loud and in your face. Like any new character to a situation she just thrusts herself into everything making sharp comments and innuendo but at least Scarlet and the teacher du jour essentially ignore her and just kind of play along so as to move away from it all. It’s just a lot of controlled chaos in a small space that has nothing to do with anything. Yet is familiar enough to anyone who’s been to school and has to interact with people.

In Summary:
Ozmafia has one of its weaker episodes here with the introduction of Ande who is essentially just a bundle of energy and inquisition that doesn’t really do much of anything. There are small moments where it’s mildly cute if only because of Scarlet and how he reacts to things but beyond that there’s really nothing to latch onto this time as even Ande’s character design doesn’t do much to stand out animation wise.

Supergirl #1 Review

Supergirl Issue 1 CoverIt’s not easy dealing with living in the stone age.

Creative Staff:
Story: Steve Orlando
Art: Brian Ching
Colors: Michael Atiyeh
Letterer: Steve Wands

What They Say:
“REIGN OF THE CYBORG SUPERMAN” part one! Supergirl is back and working for the DEO to defend National City! As Kara Danvers, average American teenager and high school student, Supergirl must balance her life as a superhero with her new life on Earth. But some demons from her Kryptonian past are coming back to haunt her, and Kara will find herself face-to-face with her father: the sinister Cyborg Superman!

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers):
The Rebirth installment we had previously for Supergirl was one that was pretty densely packed with all that it had to deal with in order to set up the foundations of this series while also being accessible for new readers. Though it felt just a bit wonky because of the back and forth of the narrative at times it did what it needed to in setting up what Kara’s past is like in a broad sense, her arrival on Earth, the challenges here that have her working with/under the DEO, and just how her life is changing by living with the Danvers. Orlando had a tall order to fill and did it pretty well. With this issue, Brian Ching signs on as the artist and he brings his style and dynamism to the page really well, especially since the bulk of what we get here is mostly dialogue based and minimal at best when it comes to action. But this more “talky” issue works very well in connecting us with Kara just as her troubles are about to really start.

A big part of what we get here is the engaging aspect to Kara that often doesn’t get the real exploration it does. Her adapting to Earth is often done in mildly comical turn as she tries to understand the culture and all coming from something completely different, but here we get the reinforcement that she was very smart where she came from – no surprise, considering her lineage – and had a rich and full life. Her trying to deal with life on Earth is extremely difficult since none of it makes sense compared to what she knows how to do and the very different set of tools she had before. Eliza and Jeremiah are trying to help and you can appreciate the things they do, such as trying to learn Kryptonian and redecorating based on visuals from the Sunstone, but the truth is that they’re so out of their depth on those elements that it just makes the pai greater for Kara. And that kind of psychological strain is something that really works well here.

supergirl-issue-1-inset

Throughout this issue we get some good stuff to reinforce the DEO side with Chase but it’s the flashback companion pieces to Krypton that I appreciate because that’s Kara. We learn more about her through that and the life she lead than anything else and it’s useful for explaining why she’s struggling. Her need to have certain things is important for her mental health and I’m glad that things were set well enough between her and Superman before he went off stage for a while. So when we get her visiting the Fortress of Solitude and what it represents, it feels right. Of course, the book does some solid backhistory for Kara in relation to her father so that makes the final panel all the more impressive and frightening. I’ve been wary of the Cyborg Superman piece of this since the last time I really knew “that” character was during his original introduction in the 90’s, but I’m loving the visual presentation here.

In Summary:
Supergirl did a lot right in its Rebirth issue and the start of the ongoing series here shows that Orlando is definitely headed in the right direction to keep me on board. I’ve not seen the character outside of non-continuity books for several years now so I’m largely going in fresh with only the TV show as my connection and I like how Orlando is handling her isolation and strain of being in this situation that’s made worse by her cousin’s absence. It’ll make the last page reveal even more problematic for her in handling it. I definitely liked seeing Brian Ching’s work here as he has a really great sense of layout and some big panels to play with at times that hits the right sweet spot of location and atmosphere. But I also like the smaller things, such as the transitions between flashback and present and his handling of Kara in her civilian disguise mode. All in all a solid start that establishes who Kara is rather than trying to hook us with big issues or just non-stop action. It’s full of character and I’m definitely into that.
