Big Windup! Oofuri Season 1 Part 1 Anime DVD Review

$

0

big-windup-season-1-part-1-coverWhen Mihashi transfers to a new school, his inner talent is drawn out by a new team and new friends.

What They Say:
Most guys can’t wait for baseball to start, but not Mihashi. For this kid, the crack of the bat is the sound of failure. Every summer he gets caught in a pickle between wanting to stay on the mound and watching his pitches get blasted out of the park. But each spring brings a fresh start, and this year, Mihashi’s at a new school with teammates that don’t know how bad he used to be. Most importantly, he’s got Abe – a real superstar behind the plate. If Mihashi can learn to trust his new catcher, this could be the year he falls in love with the game all over again.

The Review:
Audio:
Big Windup is something of a surprise when it comes to the audio department as it wasn’t the kind of show I expected to get a 5.1 mix for the English language adaptation. The series is fairly simple with its audio design in the original Japanese stereo mix, encoded at 192kbps, as it works through the dialogue and minor action sequences with the actual moments of the game and practices. It’s not meant to be an overly strong mix, but it really works nicely with the subtle moments and the overall atmosphere. The English mix doesn’t feel all that much different but it has a bit more clarity and sharpness to it. There isn’t a significant difference in directionality with the English mix from what we sampled, but it’s well done overall. We didn’t have any problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally airing in 2007, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and is enhanced for anamorphic playback. FUNimation has done this set in their standard form with two discs to cover thirteen episodes in a seven/six format. The show has some really strong animation to it and the transfer really captures it well with hardly any significant problems to it. Outside of some minor noise in a few scenes with some solid colors, Big Windup really looks good here. The quality of the animation really shines through with smooth fluid motions and some very lush colors when it comes to the background designs. This is a very pleasing transfer overall and should make fans of the show very happy.

Packaging:
The release has the two DVDs inside a single sized clear keepcase where both discs are layered across each other on the right side. The front cover is bright with only a few colors to it as it shows Mihashi throwing a pitch with a big blue sky behind him with only a few clouds. The logo is done in an expected font that works really nicely, especially with the shade of blue used. The back cover is given a good clean split as the right side has a blue stripe on which they push the runtime and disc count along with a nice shot of Mihashi. The left section has a good summary that deals with the premise of the show along with several shots from it that do a decent job of selling the cast. The remainder of the back has the standard production credits in small type and the technical grid. Because it’s a clear keepcase, the reverse side has some really good artwork of the core cast of the team as the camera looks upwards as they huddle. Everyone has varying expressions that show off their personalities quite well.

Menu:
The menus for this release uses the same style as the back cover to nice effect as the white and blue sectionalizing works really well. The sketch work of the baseball field is much more visible here with its blue lines and the character artwork stands out all the more. The logo with its colors and design is very appealing as well, which ties in nicely to the font for the menu navigation selections itself. Submenus, what few there are, load quickly and without a problem. Navigation is a breeze and the discs don’t read the players’ language presets as they default to English with no subtitles selected.

Extras:
The extras are all on the second disc, what little there are, as the only things included are clean versions of the opening and closing sequences.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Based on an ongoing manga series by Asa Higuchi, Big Windup! is a twenty-six episode series that revolves around freshman age high school baseball. Sports shows typically have not done well in the US but I continue to be excited by them when a company takes the chance on one because each time the quality is above what the previous shows were like. Big Windup! is a recent show, having aired in 2007, with some really solid animation by one of my favorite animation production studios, A-1 Pictures.

Big Windup! revolves around high school freshman Ren Mihashi who has come to Nishiura High School to get away from all the problems at his last school. Back there he was the grandson of the man who owned the school and was therefore accused of nepotism when it came to his position as the “ace” of the baseball team where he was the pitcher. After three straight years of losses that were tied up to him, he’s glad to be away from baseball and the school itself. Mihashi is the kind of young man though that hasn’t found his confidence so he’s generally a nervous wreck, always feeling like everything that goes wrong is his fault and that he’s going to be continually blamed for it. In a sense, he’s like that small dog that’s almost hyper but not quite that you wish would just settle down so everyone could have a good time together.

His arrival at Nishiura doesn’t go quite as planned though as before he knows it, he’s managed to get himself signed up on the baseball team. And not just any baseball team either, as Nishiura only had a softball team up until now so this one is made up entirely of freshmen. That gives it a very rough and unpolished feel, but without having seniors looking over them to guide them, they’re able to be molded in a different way than usual. A lot of this comes from the coach, a young woman named Momoe, who has quite the spunky attitude and a real knowledge of the game as well as a winning way of getting the kids to work with each other. Momoe has a kind of a cruel streak in her, but one that’s tempered and comes through her expressions more than anything else as she works to motivate the team.

The series naturally focuses heavily on the kids, and even then it really narrows it down to a few of them. Out of the main cast of characters, a few really stand out. The eventual named captain, Oda, is a really fun guy who isn’t exactly thrilled to be captain but takes it on and tries to do it right. Tajima is the team wunderkind with his hitting ability but also his enthusiasm in general for any position, especially if he’s told it’s difficult or it will involve something he really is interested in. The main focus is on the pitcher/catcher combination of Ren Mihashi and Takaya Abe. When Abe gets a real feel for what Mihashi can do, he realizes that Mihashi has basically been screwed over by his former team as they didn’t know how to use him. He’s got incredible skill, but lacks the confidence to use it properly and the right catcher to direct him.

This leads to an interesting exchange over this first half of the series as Abe has to learn himself what kind of catcher he wants to be, whether he’s going to control Mihashi the way he wants or whether the two can find a real working balance that will take them all the way to Koshien someday. For Abe, the real difficulty is in trying to get Mihashi to have the confidence he should have in himself based off of his rather uncommon abilities. Mihashi has been so beaten down by his former teammates that it’s difficult for him to accept. But as the two work together and the team has its first practice game against Mihashi’s former teammates, you can see everything slowly coming together. It is pretty much as you’d expect from a high school age sports show, but they do it quite well and they keep the focus almost exclusively on the boys themselves and their situation as a team. We get a few snippets elsewhere into some of their lives, mostly Mihashi during a visit to his house, but by and large the Big Windup! keeps things firmly planted in the game field itself.

There’s a lot to like about the show in general, but the animation for it really caught my attention. There have been a few shows done by A-1 Productions over here lately and this one really is striking in a way that I tend to find the VisualArts/Key shows to be. There’s a certain attention to detail that’s missing in many shows and the backgrounds are really quite beautiful when you take the time to let it all soak in. Combine this with some really strong character designs and character animation that’s very fluid during the big game scenes and you have an almost lush show in terms of animation in a sense. The practices, the games and some of the silly moments all have a really strong look to them where you can feel the attention given to it almost oozing off the screen. Rich colors, solid designs and a smoothness to the animation makes this show rise above the level of most standard sports shows in that area alone.

In Summary:
Sports shows can be real hit or miss depending on what kind of way they do it. Big Windup goes in the direction that I like as it looks to avoid a lot of things that flesh out the characters in terms of their family lives and school situations. What we do get here in the first thirteen episodes is a lot of material about baseball with freshman who are really starting to figure out how to work as a team. Each has their own particular skill or talent and they’re intent on training and practicing as much as possible. There’s a good amount of growth just in this half of the show with some of the characters, sometimes subtle, that it’s really surprising. Mihashi isn’t exactly what I’d expect in a lead character, but it’s more of an ensemble at this point and he provides the kind of milquetoast lead that’s an interesting change of pace. Just about everything was appealing about this show, from the character designs, their personalities and especially the animation and direction when it came to showing the game being played. There’re a proper respect and reverence given here to the game that really shows why the kids have such a passion for it. When that shows through, it’s even easier to connect with and to get caught up in their ambition and dreams. The next set can’t come fast enough and even that’s going to be over with far too quickly since the manga is ongoing and obviously not licensed in the US. Definitely recommended for sports fans.

Playing in the Nurse’s Office with the Latest ‘Mikagura School Suite’ Anime Dub Clip

mikagura-school-suite-header-9-12Funimation recently scheduled the Mikagura School Suite Complete Collection as a Blu-ray / DVD Combo for September 27th, 2016 where the full twelve episode series will be priced at $64.98. While we’ve got about two weeks or so to go until it’s released, they’ve now brought out a new dub clip for the show that previously saw a Broadcast Dub run during the streaming phase of its release. This one gets into some fun gaming action and “innuendo” that certainly delights.

Special features for the release includes Textless Songs, Promo Video, TV Spot, BD/DVD Promos, U.S. Trailer, Trailers

Created by Last Note, he’s a composer that has worked on a number of Vocaloid songs and ended up creating this series based on them, which has also seen a manga adaptation by Sayuki. Five volumes are out of the light novel series while three volumes of the manga have been released so far.

The series has Sonny Strait serving as the ADR director for it working off of the scripts from Jamie Marchie while Patrick Murphy serves as the lead engineer. The English language cast includes Trina Nishimura as Asuhi, Sonny Strait as Bimii, Monica Rial as Eruna, Lara Woodhull as Himi, Apphia Yu as Katai, Bryn Apprill as Kurumi, Chris Rager as Kuzuryu, Josh Grelle as Sadamatsu, Jamie Marchi as Seisa, Ben Phillips as Shigure, Kristen McGuire as Yuriko, Micah Solusod as Yuto, Alexis Tipton as Mewmirin and Josh Grelle as Minatogawa.

The Japanese cast includes Juri Kimura as Eruna Ichinomiya, Saori Onishi as Seisa Mikagura, Ari Ozawa as Otone Fujishiro, Ayaka Suwa as Himi Yasaka, Nobunaga Shimazaki as Shigure Ninomiya, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Bimii, Natsuki Hanae as Yūto Akama, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Kyoma Kuzuryu, Makoto Furukawa as Sadamatsu Minatogawa, Ai Kakuma as Asuhi Imizu, Reina Ueda as Meika Katai, Ai Kayano as Kurumi Narumi and Asuka Nishi as Yuriko.

The anime adaptation was directed by Tarou Iwasaki and it was animated at Dogakobo. Masahiro Yokotani wrote the scripts and served as supervisor while Mamani Amazaki performed double duty as character designer and chief animation director.

Plot concept: From studio Doga Kobo, who brought you Laughing Under the Clouds and Yuruyuri, comes a new magic school adventure! Eruna Ichinomiya has no desire to focus on what high school to pick. She’d rather spend her time chasing after pretty girls or playing dating sims. After all, when the only job you want is to watch TV all day, who cares what school you attend? But when her cousin Shigure Ninomiya shows her the pamphlet to Mikagura Academy, Eruna finds her picture-perfect reason to go to high school: the beautiful Seisa Mikagura. After a bizarre entrance exam and interview with a flying, talking cat, it’s clear that Mikagura is not a typical high school. Students are focused more on clubs, battles, and their special magical attacks instead of regular studies. And if Eruna wants to win over the cool, powerful Seisa, she’s got to join a club and hone her own special attack. But that’s easier said than done. Especially when there are so many cute girls to distract her

The Last Ship Season 3 Episode #13 – Don’t Look Back Review (Season Finale)

the-last-ship-season-3-episode-13The season draws to a close with some important bangs.

What They Say:
Don’t Look Back – The battle for America reaches its climactic conclusion. Also, Chandler faces a potentially life-altering test.

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
The Last Ship hits its third season finale here and already has a fourth season greenlit and a fifth season just announced as well, both of which are getting ten-episode runs for the next two summers. That makes it clear that we’ll be finishing off the show in summer 2018 and that’s a pretty solid run for a show involving a lot of water based material, military aspects, and a lot of time on a ship itself. This season worked in halves for the most part with the back half dealing with the crisis at home, which just had Chandler and his crew finally arrive at the last time around only to get caught deeper in this web of walls, deceit, and a full on coup in effect. They have to walk a delicate line in order to not pin this in any particular direction and that kind of undercuts things since the reasoning, which is minimal, doesn’t really stick as strongly as it should because of that.

The cold open for this one is a hard one on Chandler as we see him walking through some of those they rescued from the train and have set up in a gymnasium for treatment. The details they get are straightforward enough but they’re also trying to deflect some of the blame off the Marines since they were just following orders from the top. There’s plenty of distrust for obvious reasons and some disheartening aspects for those trying to help. All of this just reinforces Chandler’s intent to take down the regional administrators since they’ve gone and done so much harm to the country and government he’s sworn an oath to. And it’s good to see just how well everyone is working to deal with this as the crew is totally on board with this even if there may be some conflicting aspects to dealing with the regionals.

With four targets set, since they’re taking down the three remaining administrators plus Shaw herself, it moves smoothly and quickly for the setup as targets are assigned and Chandler works the satellite side to watch it. We never got a lot on most of the administrators since there wasn’t a lot of time given to them but they’re given enough personality here so that you can enjoy the various takedowns and how they go. In other words, with mostly the expected professionalism that we expect from these groups – though Tex of course adds a little extra spice to it. His job goes the worst since Price knew things were not going well based on the train incident and took her precautions. Similar with Shaw since she has a good bit of intelligence to work with and drew Price in so they could get things in place to eliminate Chandler.

And they’re at least being creative in how they’re doing it as there’s a drone they’ve sent to the area that can evade some of the radar detection devices they have so there’s a good challenge to it. It’s nicely tense since there’s only so many people in St. Louis to go after Shaw and Price as the others are a good distance away – and everything is being controlled by St. Louis. Shaw’s definitely proving herself to be calculated and in control of the situation as it progresses here as she gets seemingly everything she needs and that means she doesn’t need Price. I figured she’d eliminate her since she’s a thorn in her side but it’s so blatant that you have to wince at it as you wonder how Shaw thinks she can maintain control should she win in her battle against Chandler.

The assault on the St. Louis White House is about as minimal as I expected as a three against the forces there is the kind of silly situation that I expect from the show since it’s unrealistic just how much they’d be able to accomplish, even with some weak spots being known. It’s certainly a story for the history books in this world as one can imagine the way that would be written up for students to learn about! Especially compared to what would be some pretty tame drama from our past before this event. It all comes together pretty well even if the whole everyone surviving it being another piece of unrealistic aspects of it. It’s fun enough, especially since Shaw makes her way out with the general in order to take the full reins of power at this point, and we see just what kind of planning she’s put into motion to ensure her own survival. Grabbing Chandler’s kids is no surprise for her since she’s essentially working most of the usual tropes for someone involved in a coup in a TV show or low budget feature film.

While any sort of trade is going to be dicey in general, and this one takes a darker tone than it already had when you learn that the kids grandfather was killed when they were taken, you also know that the team assembled is going to have some plans to work in order to ensure that Chandler survives – and to at least try to make sure that Shaw faces some justice. She naturally has to reveal some of what’s going on to him along the way and you can understand some of her motivations but it’s also fairly simple when you get down to it – which in its own way is more realistic. It turns into a good moment for Chandler as he’s ready to kill her, especially after what she just said, and it works doubly so with Tex making sure that he doesn’t do it since he considers Chandler to be a good man after all that’s said and done. So, naturally, a perfect time to have Tex killed, right? The show seems to like using season finales for eliminating characters…

It’s also an intriguing point for the next season as we see how Shaw pushes Chandler to betray who he is as he ends up killing her outright. Considering what he’s been put through and all those lost along the way thanks to her machinations one can’t be too surprised, but it’s a game changing moment for him because of how strongly he believes in upholding the laws of the land. To not bring her to justice is going to be a very big deal for his mindset even if he knows it’s the right thing. There’s a lot of complications in how that story would unfold for the public, complex pieces, that will make it difficult for a lot to rally behind him. I like the potential of all of this as it’s something that can be a real growth period for Chandler and add some new complexity to things, but I’m also wary of the series being able to really work it well.

In Summary:
The Last Ship may wrap a lot of things up here smoothly but it doesn’t feel quite as anticlimactic as what we had with the Asian adventure. The episode has a lot of things up in the air to deal with and some if deals with events just working too well in the end so that it can come together right but it does work because the show has a kind of loose and by the seat of its pants feeling about it. My hope with the next season is that things are paced a bit better and that we do get some months that exist between them rather than an immediate follow-up because it needs to put some real distance between events so that people, and the country, are in a more interesting and hopefully solidified position that makes more sense.
