Firmly in the rumor category that we hope to be a true, a few events are swirling this week that could bring something really interesting to the big screen down the line. The first nugget out is that Katee Sackhoff, who is out doing press for Riddick and is currently starring in Longmire on TV, mentioned that ”there’s been some stuff going on” between herself and Disney, mostly “a lot of checking of availability for the first quarter of next year.”
That could be anything of course, but it also comes at a time when Marvel Studios Co-President Louis D’Esposito is saying:
“There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female leader superhero,” said D’Esposito. “We have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?”
It’s one of the first times that Captain Marvel has been mentioned and it would certainly work in giving them a powered superhero of the female persuasion that is doing well in the comics and is enjoying a good revival thanks to writer Kelly Sue Deconnick.
With a few unannounced movies slotted down the line and master plan material out there always adjusting and moving, the speculation runs now that if this pans out, the Q1 2014 plan is potentially to introduce the character in a minor way in the upcoming 2015 Avengers: Age of Ultron film and then spin her out on her own. We’ve already got a few new characters appearing in that film with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, so it is getting crowded, but laying the foundation in the same way that Maria Hill was added to The Avengers which can be spun into other films definitely gives a potential launching point.
Would you want to see a Captain Marvel movie?
