While part of me wonders if this is just first blush material related to the deal between GKIDS and New Video Group/Cinedigm, Amazon is listing a July 15th, 2014 release date for a DVD titled only as Mononoke, which is likely the the twelve episode series aired in the summer of 2007 as part of the noitaminA block and was animated by Toei Animation. New Video Group has released a few Toei titles and is working on a subtitled Saint Seiya set, so it’s within the realm of possibility, but listing it as a $19.95 release for twelve episodes (no details are listed on the solicitation) does make you question how much of the information is legitimate. The series was picked up for Australian release in early 2013 and that set still retails for about $50.
The series spawned a two part manga adaptation as well that ran in Young Gangan that resulted in two compiled volumes being released later on.
Plot Concept: Mononoke follows a wandering, nameless character known only as the “Medicine Seller” (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai). The series is made up of individual chapters in which the medicine seller encounters, combats and subsequently destroys various mononoke. The “mononoke” are a type of ayakashi, unnatural spirits that linger in the human world.
