The formal solicitations aren’t out there yet, but the first blush information is starting to reveal itself for a series of Blu-ray box sets for the anime adaptation of Slam Dunk. The show originally ran for 101 episodes and Toei is looking at five box sets that will be released starting in July 2014 that will go every other month through March 2015. The planned pricing for them is 16,000 yen as well, which is definitely better than one might expect for the show and the amount of material it covers.

Based on previous releases, and the currently airing high definition broadcast of the series, it’s expected that this HD remaster release will be an upscale, which has its own set of issues. You can see some of the discussion on that here. As with other Toei releases of series that have been shown overseas with subtitles, it’s not expected that those subtitles will be included here.

Plot concept: Hanamichi Sakuragi, an entering Shohoku high school freshman, holds a record for being rejected by 50 girls during middle school. His nearly 2 meters height and bright red hair causes most students to write him off as a delinquent.

One day, a girl named Haruko Akagi approaches Hanamichi without any fear. When she asks Hanamichi “do you like basketball?” Hanamichi falls head over heels for the girl of his dreams. Without missing a beat, Hanamichi tells her he loves basketball, and the two head to the gymnasium where Hanamichi learns about the slam dunk. He also learns of Rukawa, one of the country’s top basketball prospects, also a freshman at Shohoku.
