As is the case with most fans, it’s easy to read more into a sentence than actually exists. In advance of the opening of X-Men: Days of Future Past with producer Lauren Shuler Donner, she talked about potential spinoffs for that franchise since they want to keep that universe building and growing and there are certainly a lot of ways to go that don’t always involve Wolverine. Amid that conversation, there was talk about the usual Gambit and Deadpool pieces that would get made if they were really serious about it, but brain trust member Simon Kinberg added an amusing wrinkle to the discussion:
“I love what Jen Lawrence has done with [Mystique], and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”
Naturally, that gets a lot of people excited, but it’s potential is likely pretty small since once Lawrence finishes her likely three film contract for the X-Men franchise and wraps up what she’s doing with Hunger Games and its third and fourth features that are filming, she’s expected to move away from all of this to a degree and focus more on films such as Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle as opposed to more genre work.
Until things get fleshed out more, all X-Men fans have to look forward to is X-Men: Apocalypse and The Wolverine 2.
