The fall 2018 anime series SSSS.Gridman has been moving along well with the simulcast hitting and Funimation putting together a dubbed version quickly. The show wasn’t able to keep to a same-day production for too long but that’s not necessarily a bad thing as it lets a bit more work get done on it. With the show rolling out still, Funimation now has a new two-minute dub clip from the early part of the series showing off the cast.

The series is directed by Akira Amemiya with scripts by Keiichi Hasegawa. Masayuki Gotou is credited with the Gridman design.

The English cast includes Brandon McInnis as Yuta, Robert McCollum as Gridman, Jill Harris as Rikka, Greg Ayres as Utsumi, Lindsay Seidel as Akane, and Barry Yandell as Alexis.

The Japanese cast includes Hikaru Midorikawa as GridmanYūya Hirose as Yūta Hibiki, Hikaru Midorikawa as Gridman, Sōma Saitō as Shō Utsumi, Yume Miyamoto as Rokka Takarada, Reina Ueda as Akane Shinjō, Tetsu Inada as Alexis Kerib, Ryousuke Takahashi as Samurai Caribar, Katsuyuki Konishi as Max, Aoi Yūki as Borar, Masaya Matsukaze as Vitt, Kenichi Suzumura as Mysterious Boy, Mayumi Shintani as Rikka Mama, Akari Kitō as Hassu, and Suzuko Mimori as Namiko.

Maaya Uchida is performing the ending theme song for the series with “youthful beautiful” which will have its CD ship in mid-October.

Check out the official site and Twitter.

Plot Concept: You’re not alone. On any day, anywhere. Yūta Hibiki, who is a first-year high school student living in Tsutsujidai, one day wakes up to find he has lost his memories. And he meets the “Hyper Agent Gridman” on his old computer. Gridman says that Yūta has a mission he must fulfill, and Yūta sets out to find the meaning to those words and his memory loss. Yūta’s friends — Shō Utsumi, Rikka Takarada, and Akane Shinjō — would always help him and spend their days with him. But, their tranquil days are suddenly and easily crushed with the appearance of kaijū.

“Break Through! The Straw Hat’s Mighty Sea Battle!”

What They Say:
The much anticipated wedding cake is on its way, but there is a debate at the last minute! Shouldn’t this opportunity be used to slip poison into Big Mom’s meal to topple the Emperor of the Sea? Meanwhile, Carrot’s unearthly ability based on the power of the moon saves the day!

The Review:
Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
While Carrot has had some good sequences since she was brought into the series it was her transformation episode the last time around that really ramped her up into something special. I liked her in a general sense prior to that and she handled herself well in the various fights with different characters but it was fun getting something so serious and intense for a bit with a good bit of power behind her. We’ve got a lot of power players on the team in general but having something like this shake things up a bit and provide a new angle to work with, and just to see some of them in awe of what she did, is one of those fun and welcome moments.

Naturally, the show wants to get us going elsewhere and that’s picking up with the Luffy and Katakuri fight, which has been boring the heck out of me for a bit now. There’s creativity in the fight sequence to be sure but there’s not much going for it beyond that as it feels like it’s been going on for too many weeks. The first half also gives us some time aboard the ship that Sanji is on where they’re recognizing that Big Mom is in a bad way as is Bege, which raises the tensions a good deal. Where it becomes difficult is that Sanji makes it clear he can carry out the assassination anytime he wants but only after he does what he has to by his own code of honor, which is feeding and taking care of a guest. It’s not exactly a complicated thing but it puts Bege in a position where he has to wait but is able to do so since even Chiffon is on Sanji’s side over it.

The show does thankfully get back to Carrot in the back half as we see her going intensely at the enemy here. The creativity of the moves and the visual for it all is great, especially as she’s starting to fall apart from the strain on her system. She’s totally aware of it, not lost in the moment, but fighting on to protect as much as she can before she can’t do anymore. It’s a fun bit of action to watch unfold and running that alongside the worn down Big Mom material and just the darkness of events hits a sweet spot, especially as she gets her second wind and starts up anew. And, naturally, everything comes back to the fight between Luffy and Katakuri, which again frustrates me just as much as it did at the beginning of the episode. End already.

In Summary:
One Piece doesn’t have anything big or radical going on here with the storyline but is continuing to smooth out all the pieces and move events forward. It’s small and incremental here but it covers several different things which is better in my mind than most of the episodes that are singularly focused. I like what we get from Sanji and Carrot but the general thrust is that we’re just doing little more than treading water at the moment, spinning our wheels without accomplishing a whole lot. It’s a fun spin but lacks any real substance.

‘Ralph Breaks The Internet’ Doesn’t Quite Break The Box Office

$

The Thanksgiving holiday is always a fun one as you can look at the box office in a couple of ways. The bulk of reporting tends to look at the numbers more at the three-day totals of the traditional weekend but there are also lots of crowing about the five-day totals that include folks like me that sneak out from family and enjoy some time in the theater.

This period saw Ralph Breaks the Internet take the top spot for the three-day with a $55.7 million take but an $84.5 million overall for the five-day. With an “A-” CinemaScore to it and pretty good critical consensus overall, it’s playing similar to the first but with more women going, making it an almost 50/50 split in terms of gender. The film also did well overseas with a $41.5 million take to bring its debut to the $126 million total.

Another new film this weekend was Creed II which netted a huge $55.8 million take for the five-day and had a $35 million three-day, which is ahead of the $39 million opening weekend for the first film. This one also saw some balancing in the gender dynamics with more women coming to see this one but also still skewing a bit older.

Not surprising is the debut of Robin Hood with its $100 million budget and a critical panning as it did $9.1 for the three-day and $14 for the five-day. It’s definitely not a good weekend for Lionsgate/Summit once again.

This weekend saw Green Book expanding from just under 30 screens to just over 1,000 where it did $5.4 million for the weekend with a $7.8 million total so far. The film got a strong “A+” CinemaScore rating and criticals are generally liking it but it’s going to take some strong word of mouth to really move it forward more.

The Crimes of Grindelwald ended up landing in fourth place where it did $29 million for the weekend with a $117 million take overall domestically since it debuted. It also added another $83 million overseas and has brought its worldwide take to just under $440 million so far.

As mentioned before, there’s not a lot coming out in a big way until December 14th so next week sees the debut of The Possession of Hannah Grace from Sony in 1,900 screens.

Brave Witches Complete Collection Blu-ray Anime Review

$

It’s time to de-pants in a new location!

What They Say:
The war on pants continues! Follow the newest group of witches with the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing, the Brave Witches. After a successful battle against the Neuroi, the fight against them continues in Europe. Hikari Karibuchi, a young girl from Fuso, works her way up the ranks to catch up to her elite soldier sister, Takami. But war is a dangerous game, and even magic has its costs.

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this release brings us the original Japanese language in stereo while the English dub gets a 5.1 boost, both of which are encoded using the Dolby TrueHD lossless codec. There’s some good sound design to it, mostly when it comes to the action though. These scenes stand out well with the surround aspect of it in the English mix while the Japanese has a good forward soundstage design that keeps things moving and engaging. Both mixes have their strong suits and use them well and in some ways the English mix also makes out better because of it being louder, giving it more impact. The bulk of the show does revolve around dialogue and the like in general though and that comes across well with no problems during regular playback with dropouts or distortions.

Video:
Originally airing in 2016, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 in 1080p using the AVC codec. The thirteen episodes of this series are spread across two discs with nine episodes on the first and four on the second which is also where the extras reside. The show has a stronger visual presentation overall in terms of its color design and there’s a lot of great pop to it as it plays out across so many scenes. The CG has a very good look here where it maintains a solid look to it with hardly any noise to it since it’s either solid gray or solid red. The animation has a better fluidity to it and the transfer captures that well as there’s no discernible cross coloration and nothing noteworthy when it comes to line noise. I really liked the look of the show here as it all unfolded.

Packaging:
The packaging for this release comes in a slightly thicker than standard Blu-ray case to hold the two discs that each format has, all of which are on hinges. The set comes with an o-card that replicates the case artwork to good effect as we get the sisters in their standard uniforms with the cuteness of ears and tails out while also showing off a big of weaponry. The back cover gives us some classic 1940’s styling to it with the tagline and more character artwork in action mode and there’s a good selection of shots from the show as well. The summary of the premise covers things well and we get a breakdown on what’s included with episodes, OVA, and extras. The technical grid also breaks down both formats cleanly and clearly with an accurate understanding of how the show is put together. While there are no show related inserts we do get artwork on the reverse side that has two panels with their own versions of the cover but with different character pairings to choose from.

Menu:
The menu design for the release doesn’t go as far as it could for giving it a good military feel, though it has some of the flavor. The menu is laid out with a simple block along the lower left with the navigation while to the right we get the visual from the front cover, which feels “screwed on” in a good way. The background for the whole piece is a good gray camo design and the logo looks good overlaid on that with it in white but with some stars of color. The menu is certainly functional and it looks decent as it shows off the characters and cutness, but it feels like it could have done a lot more.

Extras:
The only extras included here are the clean versions of the opening and closing sequences.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
With a few successful Strike Witches series behind it already, the franchise came back in the fall of 2016 with the Brave Witches run. This one shifted things up to focus on the 502nd Joint Fighter Wing with a new cast and location. With Gonzo and AIC Spirits working on previous projects, Silver Link came on in 2014 with an OVA series and ended up tackling this series afterward. I’ve long enjoyed the property overall for some of its goofiness and charm but also just the enjoyment of the concept and aircraft from this period, even in an alternative world, that focuses on the kinds of things the Second World War produced. Taking it into an alternative world and making it a mix of aliens and magic is a familiar mashup but it’s executed better than one would think.

This season focuses on the Orussia area and the name takes on a good connotation here since the real world had some hugely impressive female pilots known as Night Witches during the war. Here, this one places us in Petersburg where the 502nd operates and works to push back against the Neuroi, the strange aliens that are causing trouble all over the world. Our focus has been on Japan previously and the team there but this one is largely the same concept and idea, just with some mildly different motivations and taking place in the cold – but still with shorts/pantsu. The struggle is what we’ve seen before as the Neuroi are causing quite a number of inroads and there’s a pretty bleak feeling in general that leans into some of what the area is like and some of Petersburg’s history. With this taking place in 1944, the general idea is more of the same overall for the franchise but it works well when you get down to it.

The leading character through which we see things here is with Hikari Karibuchi, the younger sister of Takami. Takami serves well in Fuso and the threats there as her magic has the added bonus of the Contact Eye that lets her really dial in on the core of the Neuroi. Hikari has the same thing for the most part but there’s that protective older sister element in play, which is made worse when Takami learns that Hikari is being dispatched to Petersburg in Orussia to join the squadron there. Naturally, Takami isn’t keen on this as Hikari isn’t really someone she thinks can handle what’s ahead and she kind of proves that out in a mock battle. What helps Hikari is that she has a significant well of magic to draw from and the right kind of compassion as she helps out the other witch who ended up in trouble along the way and helped out with a bigger problem with the Neuroi as well.

That doesn’t exactly enamor her new comrades all that much either since they’re on the front lines and have little time or patience for what they feel like is an underpowered rookie. They’re fighting to save their country with the threat that’s there and it has that grim feeling that’s appropriate for the area. It’s no surprise that in a basic sense it follows the journey of the original Strike Witches series with Hikari trying to fit in and do right by everyone, to be capable and fight back to save those that she cares for. She also obviously wants to show Takami that she can handle herself in all of this which is what becomes the main series end run focus as things “get serious” at that point. That works well and you get a good handle on the two as sisters over a couple of episodes, which is a good way to close the series. At least until you get to the OVA that just goes for basic hanging around with some nudity tossed in for good measure.

What the show does is pretty much par for the course as we get introduced to the expansive cast of other witches who have varying opinions of their latest addition until she does something that ups their respect for her. The leads to them actively helping her while also going through missions against the Neuroi. It’s been long enough since I last saw the other works so I’m not sure if there are any drastically new tricks here until we get toward the end with the magic missile that’s put together but it’s fun watching the flying, the attacks, and the uncertainty and variety to the Neuroi itself. The cast, in general, isn’t a carbon copy of the original cast but at the same time there’s a general familiarity to them as archetypes that doesn’t have to stretch much to get done. The result is something where I’m sure the really big fans are all in since they present themselves with unique uniforms, weapons, and design elements, but for the more casual fan it’s a nice sea of pretty faces with an array of pantsu presented in different ways. It’s well-handled and it delights with a strong visual execution on top of all of that.

In Summary:
The original Strike Witches was a series I liked both for what it was and for it being one of the first legal streamed (and downloadable) series. Brave Witches takes us to a new place with a new cast and it spends its time working the familiar outside of that. But the change in locations to the cold of Petersburg makes a difference and I like the dynamic between Hikari and Takami as it adds a different set of motivations. Funimation’s release is light on extras and has a straightforward packaging design to it but it has a solid dub and a great looking encode that makes it a delight to watch. Fans of the franchise will enjoy it and this installment feels a lot more accessible in general.

‘Major 2nd’ Manga Enters Hiatus

With a popular anime series running earlier this year, the Major 2nd manga has hit a snag. Creator Takuya Mitsuda has put the series on hiatus after just coming back from a brief hiatus due to his physical condition worsening. No details regarding the problem were revealed nor how long they intend for the hiatus to last. With a number of manga creators essentially working themselves to the bone with weekly magazines it’s an unfortunately common problem that doesn’t seem like it’ll ever change.

The TV anime series was directed by Ayumu Watanabe based on the scripts by Michihiro Tsuchiya, Kenji Konuda, Mitsuyo Suenaga, and Kenichi Yamashita. Kenichi Oonuki worked on the character designs with Shogakukan Production handling the animation.

The Japanese cast includes Natsumi Fujiwara as Daigo Shigeno, Koutarou Nishiyama as Hikaru Satou, Kana Hanazawa as Mutsuko Sakura, Natsumi Takamori as Izumi Shigeno, Yuko Sasamoto as Kaoru Shigeno, Yui Horie as Michiru Mayumura, and Jun Fukushima as Wataru Mayumura.

That original series ran for sixteen years between 1994 and 2010 from Takuya Mitsuda where it produced seventy-eight volumes to its name and over fifty million copies sold. And, of course, a couple hundred anime episodes and a few films.

Plot concept: Shigeno Daigo is an elementary school student whose father, Goro, is a professional baseball player. Inspired by his father, who was once a Major League player, Daigo started playing baseball with the Mifune Dolphins, a youth league team. He was unable to live up to the expectations of being the son of a professional, however, and quit baseball after less than a year. Then, in the spring of his sixth-grade year, Daigo’s school welcomes a transfer student who’s just returned from America. The transfer student is Sato Hikaru, and it turns out his father is Sato Toshiya, a former Major League player and Goro’s close friend. The fate of these two young men begins to move forward!

Taishi Tsutsui / Shueisha / Boku-tachi wa Benkyō ga Dekinai Production Committee

We learned back at the end of August that the Boku-tachi wa Benkyō ga Dekinai manga by Taishi Tsutsui was getting an anime adaptation. The project has now updated with a look at the cast for the show after previously getting the main staff and key visual. The main cast now includes:

  • Ryota Ohsaka as Nariyuki Yuiga
  • Haruka Shiraishi as Fumino Furuhashi
  • Miyu Tomita as Rizu Ogata
  • Sayumi Suzushiro as Uruka Takemoto

Yoshiaki Iwasaki is directing it based on the series composition by Go Zappa. Masakatsu Sasaki is handling the character designs with Studio Silver and Arvo Animation handling the animation production.

The Weekly Shonen Jump title, which got a Jump Start preview as We Never Learn through Viz Media, began in February 2017 and has seven volumes out so far with new volumes landing roughly every two months. Popular properties from the magazine generally generate a good bit of content quickly for a single-cour and can boost the sales of both the magazine with people jumping on for more as well as the compiled volumes.

Check out the official site and Twitter.

Plot Concept: The series follows Yuiga, a student who is aiming for a scholarship because he comes from a poor family. His school gives him a condition: he can have a recommendation for a scholarship if he tutors his two beautiful classmates to help them get into the schools of their choice. Ogata may be a science genius and Furuhashi a literature prodigy — but Ogata is aiming for a liberal arts school and Furuhashi is aiming for a science school. And they’re both clueless outside their fields of expertise.

What better way to hone those skills than with a rigorous curriculum of gambling? At Hyakkaou Private Academy, the winners live like kings, and the losers are put through the wringer. But when Yumeko Jabami enrolls, she’s gonna teach these kids what a high roller really looks like

We learned last week with the release of the 14th volume of the current Ace of Diamond manga from Yuji Terajima that an important announcement will be made on November 25th at the upcoming event for it that involves the staff and cast of the anime. Is anyone surprised that it’s for another anime series? The Ace of Diamond Act II manga will be getting a new series that will arrive in 2019 and while unstated it’s easy to assume it’ll be in the spring to coincide with the start of baseball season like the previous works.

Which is even more telegraphed than most of the usual important announcements. With the TV anime series getting three box set releases over this year they’ve seeded things well and it’s expected that a new TV anime adaptation is in the works. If true, we’ll expect it to arrive in the spring alongside the new season of the game.

The manga comes from writer/artist Yuji Terajima who began the work back in 2006 in Weekly Shonen Magazine. The anime adaptation is produced by Madhouse and Production I.G.

Series concept: I want to pitch to that mitt again… A meeting with catcher Kazuya Miyuki changed the 15-year-old Eijun Sawamura’s life. He said goodbye to all his friends and knocked upon the door of Seidou, a prestigious baseball school, intent on testing his own strength. There, he met many proud baseball players who were betting everything on the sport! A classic tale, yet new and fresh. All the emotion and excitement of the popular baseball manga is at last coming to television in the form of an anime!
