Samurai Warriors Complete Collection Anime DVD Review

Samurai Warriors CoverRepeating history once again.

What They Say:
Based on the hit video game series from the Dynasty Warriors franchise, this dramatic reimagining of one of Japan’s most revered historical periods throws you head first into the middle of an epic battle royale. Follow along as your favorite hacking, slashing characters from the video game meet once more on the battlefield.

Under the banner of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, brothers Yukimura and Nobuyuki Sanada fought to end the wars raging across Japan uniting the country under one peaceful rule. After many hard-won battles their victory was sealed, but unfortunately the peace lasted only as long as Hideyoshi himself. After his untimely death, the very men who believed in his cause were split down the middle… and for the first time, the Sanada brothers found themselves on opposing sides of a conflict. As they gear up to go to war with one another they find themselves torn between their duty as warriors, and their bond as brothers. At the end of the day, only one side can win—but which brother will come out on top?

The Review:
Audio:
The audio presentation for this series brings us the original Japanese language track in stereo encoded at 192kbps and the English language mix in 5.1 which is encoded at 448kbps. The series works a decent balance of action and dialogue so that each episode has something lively in it but it’s not one that really stretches itself. It’s fairly straightforward fight material with some nice accents on the sound effects for things like the horses and other pieces of the war machines. The dialogue has some decent placement from time to time but it’s also not an area where it’s going to stretch itself much. The balance between the two makes for a solid presentation overall as it captures the design that was intended and comes across clean and clear throughout.

Video:
Originally airing in 2015, the transfer for this TV series is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and is enhanced for anamorphic playback. The twelve episodes are spread across two discs in an eight/four format with the extras on the second disc. Animated by TYO Animations and Tezuka Productions, the series has a kind of basic look about it that feels like it could have been made anytime in the last twenty years or so. It’s solid and competent but it doesn’t have anything distinctive and the action scenes don’t stand out. The color designs are good with no real noise to be had in the solid color fields and the high motion scenes are handled well. It’s a bright and colorful design that hits all the right notes with the way it’s encoded that should make most fans happy.

Packaging:
The packaging for this release is done up in a standard sized clear DVD case that has an o-card that replicates the artwork of the case itself. It’s a familiar key visual piece with the cast splintered off into different segments on it but it works with the weapon speared through it and the variety and color to it all. It’s also a bit brighter and stronger with the o-card cardstock that gives it a nice boost. THe back cover goes for a dark black background with some decent character artwork blended into it while having some paper style background over it that breaks down the summary of the premise. The few shots from the show are decent and we get a good clean look at the extras and episode count. The rest is the usual with a minor production section and a small but clean technical grid. While there are no show related inserts we get a nice two-panel spread with the leads on one side when they were young and the other with them as they are in the series.

Menu:
The menu design for this release goes with a simple approach that works nicely as we get a static image that’s the same for both discs with our primary red and blue characters along the left. With the fiery reds and yellows in the background, it has some decent pop to it and stands out well. The navigation is to the right of them with the English logo and the basic navigation that’s quick to load and easy to move around in. Selections are straightforward and everything is smoothly functional.

Extras:
The extras for this release are interesting as we get the nearly hourlong Legend of Sanada special. This was a pre-broadcast special that essentially recaps a decent chunk of the series as it introduces the characters and basic motivations of what’s going on. After watching the show I only skimmed it because of what it is and just couldn’t bring myself to revisit what I had just watched. Beyond that, we also get the clean versions of the opening and closing sequences.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
After putting out a special in early 2014, the main series for Samurai Warriors arrived in the winter 2015 season for a twelve episode run. Based on the Samurai Wars 4-II game and following up the special, this series was animated by TYO Animations and Tezuka Productions. Directed by Kojin Ochi from the scripts by Yuka Yamada, the series essentially gives us fairly standard sengoku era style material. We’ve seen a lot of these shows over the years and there’s definitely a wide range of ways to tell the tale. What Samurai Warriors wants to do is to just tell us the most basic and simplest of stories when you get down to it and that’s its undoing. Because we’ve seen creative ways of bringing it to life, going to something more basic just reminds us of why it doesn’t work.

The story is straightforward in that it takes place with the kind of infighting that we expected of this era with the various sides going at it. It’s primary focus is on Yukimura Sanada as he’s considered one of the threats to the potential new way coming with a unified nation where samurai ethics will be turned toward governance, it moves back and forth in trying to deal with him and what he represents. There’s this good sized faction of samurai and other warriors that simply love to fight and are uneasy to say the least about the era of the samurai coming to an end. So we get to see elements of this from time to time but the show isn’t really trying to tell a story. When it has to deal with these issues it almost comes across as a history lesson more than anything else as it talks about what’s going on and why.

Quite frankly, the more this show went on and the more characters came into play that just lean into their tried and true formulas, the more we saw familiar places like Sekigahara and the struggles of the various factions, the more the show simply turned me off. It’s decently put together in the technical sense but it has no life, no energy or enthusiasm to it that helps it to separate itself out into something that stands on its own. We’ve seen more than enough good game to anime adaptations over the years and even within this particular field of material but Samurai Warriors is what you basically call a baseline. Which is fine when you’re starting this kind of run at a story but after a couple of decades of shows about this period that I’ve watched now the baseline just doesn’t cut it at all.

In Summary:
I’ve seen this story so many times that it really doesn’t register all that much anymore. There are fun and creative things that can be done with it as we’ve seen over the years but Samurai Warriors simply doesn’t do that. It could easily exist ten years ago as is and twenty years ago as well. Fans of the show will be glad to have it and likely don’t care much that there isn’t a Blu-ray release because they’re just looking to see the adventures of their favorite characters. This show didn’t do a thing for me but it’s at least put together well in the technical sense.

TOHO Streams Clean ‘Hoseki no Kuni’ Anime Opening Sequence

Hoseki no KuniOne of the best ways to get someone to watch a show in this busy landscape of anime is to get your opening sequence in front of them. While many of these sequences are structured the same, comically so in some cases, they do showcase the designs and mood of it well enough that it can be a make or break moment. So we’re definitely loving that TOHO is streaming a clean version of the Land of the Lustrous anime series that kicked off this weekend. The series has distribution through HiDive internationally while domestically it’s on Anime Strike. Sentai Filmworks has the home video rights for it.

The series is being directed by Takahiko Kyougoku based on the series composition by Toshiya Oono. Asako Nishida is handling the character designs with studio Orange handling the animation.

The Japanese cast includes Tomoyo Kurosawa as Phosphophyllite, Mikako Komatsu as Cinnabar, Ayane Sakura as Bort, Ai Kayano as Diamond, Yumi Uchiyama as Rutile, Saori Hayami as Goshenite, Mutsumi Tamura as Morganite, Ayahi Takagaki as Jade, Ari Ozawa as Benitoite, Himika Akaneya as Zircon, Atsumi Tanezaki as Neptunite, Mamiko Noto as Euclase, Junko Minagawa as Yellow Diamond, Rie Kugimiya as Alexandrite, Jouji Nakata as Kongou-sensei, Sayaka Harada as Watermelon Tourmaline, Reina Ueda as Hemimorphite, Hitomi Nabatame as Sphene, and Houko Kuwashima as Peridot.

Serialized in Afternoon magazine since 2012 and has seven volumes out so far, the original work comes from Haruko Ichikawa. Kodansha Comics released the first volume as Land of the Lustrous on June 27th, 2017.

Plot Concept: In the distant future, a new immortal and genderless life form called Gems populate the Earth. The 28 Gems must fight against the Moon Dwellers, who attack them regularly to abduct them and to turn them into decorations. Each Gem is assigned a role, such as a fighter or a medic.

Being only 300 years old, Phosphophyllite is the youngest of the Gems and has no assignment yet. He wants to help to fight the Moon Dwellers, but is too weak and brittle for battle. One day the master of Gems, Adamantine, assigns him the task of creating a natural history encyclopedia.

Project Blue Earth Episode #05 – 06 Anime Review

Project Blue Earth SOS VisualThe OVA series draws to a close with a classic epic feeling and plenty more tried and true elements from B-movie science fiction serials.

What They Say:
Aliens have begun their invasion of Earth. Fortunately, scientists have developed the Sky Knight, a fighter plane capable of defending the world, and a group of teenagers has stepped forward to lead the resistance.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Project Blue: Earth SOS draws to a rather solid and entertaining conclusion with the last two OVAs which play out like four episodes of a TV series. The world has come to the brink of destruction with the Baguan now demanding humanity surrenders to them as they display just how powerful they are. Of course, humanity won’t falter – for the most part – and young men and women will determine the course of events in a spunky yet dramatic way. Against my better judgment and feelings about the first couple of episodes, this show is just fun in general if you go into it with the right attitude.

The two episodes here cover a lot of ground as the cast is moving about in different directions trying to deal with how the Baguan are getting more forceful. Events seem to be pushing them to finish out their invasion of Earth quickly and they’re taking more blunt approaches to dealing with it. The environmental disaster that they’ve precipitated is just now being realized as a cold winter is falling over the planet and the scientists believe it will take over three hundred years to restore any kind of real balance. At least through natural means as you know Billy will come up with some gee-whiz device that will help accelerate things. After all, this is the kid who can build sub-light rockets without breaking a sweat.

What’s interesting with the Baguan’s next attack plan is that they’re utilizing humanity against itself, which makes sense as the revelations start to come later in the series. With the ability to blanket the world with their might in general, their demands for surrender take an interesting angle as they put out hypnotic messages within a radio show that the majority of people seem to be listening to. This new wave of “radio zombies” that gets created have a loyalty to the Baguan and begin to cause trouble all over the place, including within Metropolitan X and the United Nations. People that could once be trusted now act like zombies, at least at first. As it progresses they seem to retain more intelligence and actively try to cause trouble beyond just having a slow-moving pace to them. It’s almost amusing though as the heads of the Labyrinth Alliance can’t believe how close the radio zombies get to them and their top level staff.

While all of this is going on and Billy is frantically trying to figure out how to fix it before Lotta and others lose themselves to the hypnotic waves, Penny has been spending his time with Margaret in her grandfather’s mansion. Professor Steamson is the key to everything is what Penny comes to believe and the subtle hints that he gets from Margaret begin to give him ideas of where to proceed, particularly when she shows him a partial message he had left her years earlier. The professor and what he had done in the past is certainly years beyond what humanity can do in the present day of the show but it fits in with what has happened as the origins of the Baguan become clear. In rather classic fashion, humanity’s worst enemy is itself as the professor caused the Baguan to exist and humanity is now paying the price for it.

Everything comes to a head as the Baguan utilize their advanced technologies and understandings of space and time to bring their home world into Earth orbit so they can carry out their last desperate plan. Not unlike previous episodes, there’s always a bit more technology that has been kept under wraps that can be used to save the day, provided there is someone with the guts to use it. With people like Billy and James around, there is always someone who will step up to the plate and do what they can, whether it’s for their own purposes or for the greater cause of defending humanity. It gets somewhat campy though when you have them bringing out the Sky Knight warship during the previous episodes and now upping the ante with the Universe Knight to save the planet from the onslaught of Baguan ships. At the same time though, it fits in with the way the show has worked and the larger portrayal of old science fiction books and serials.

And that continues to be the most difficult part of the show overall. Project Blue: Earth SOS is an incredibly well done production on a technical level and the adherence to so many classic aspects of science fiction storytelling is spot on. But these aspects are ones that are just tough to wrap your head around depending on your upbringing. I read a great deal of these kinds of books in my youth and had a hard time connecting with them because of the quasi-camp that a lot of them had. My affection is far more towards the hard science fiction subset of the genre with the realism and technological aspects, ala books by Stephen Baxter. But even with that preference, it’s very easy to admire what they’ve done here as it’s very rarely done anymore and even more rarely with such an incredible range of production values.

In Summary:
Perhaps it was the mood at the time or just something about those first two episodes that rubbed me the wrong way, but Project Blue: Earth SOS really comes into its own in the middle and finishes out wonderfully here, camp and all. When certain things fall into place it all becomes revealed rather quickly and without much in the way of surprises. Yet the show simply does it so well, even with really corny names, that I couldn’t help but smile. Everything about this final set of episodes takes it to the next logical level and raises the epic aspect of it as humanity is fighting for its very survival yet has a hard time seeing the small obvious things that will be big stumbling blocks. Predictable, corny and occasionally quite goofy, Project Blue: Earth SOS still manages to be a very entertaining ride that’s simply not done anymore in this fashion. For good reason at that since it’s not something I’d want to see regularly. As a rarity, an homage to a time gone by, it’s excellent.

rin-ne-season-3-visualPony Canyon is handling the home video side of the release of third season of Rin-Ne in Japan with it getting a DVD-only release, something that continues to be a bit of a surprise. With the first set out recently we do have some artwork for it but it’s only of the tiny variety and retailers aren’t updating with it yet, sadly. Interestingly, the first season was done as eight singles whereas this one is being done up as two box sets for its run. The show is priced at 17,280 yen for each sets with the first landing on September 20th, 2017 and the second on December 20th, 2017.

Sentai Filmworks has picked up the North American license for this series.

The show is set to be directed by Seiki Sugawara at Brains Base with the eternally busy Michiko Yokote handling the scripts for the series. The series stars Kaito Ishikawa as Rinne Rokudo, Marina Inoue as Sakura Mamiya, Hitomi Nabatame as Rokumon, Satsuki Yukino as Tamako, Kappei Yamaguchi as Sabato Rokudo, Ryohei Kimura as Tsubasa Jūmonji, Tetsuya Kakihara as Masato, Sora Tokui as Miho, Aya Suzaki as Rika and Tesshô Genda as Narrator.

Rumiko Takahashi’s works have spawned some long running shows over the years, from Urusei Yatsura to Ranma 1/2 as well as Maison Ikkoku and Inu Yasha. Add in a number of OVAs over the years, most of which are long out of print in North America, and it’s easy to see why they’ll animate what she produces once there’s more than enough content to work with. The manga series, which is released in North America by Viz as Rin-ne, began in 2009 and has twenty-two volumes released there to date. Viz Media has released the 17th volume of the series last month in North America.
